I'd drop my 3w, 4h, 6i, and 8i, leaving me with D, 2h, 5i, 7i, 9i, PW, GW, SW, LW, P.

I rarely hit my 3w, my 4h is a hook machine, and the gaps from the two irons I can make up with what's left. I kept the scoring clubs in tact to preserve the shorter yardages, which I'll need if I sort out my driver.

I agree that ten is easy.

I’d take out the 54°, 8I, 6I, 3I.

If I had to choose 10, I'd choose the following:

  1. Driver
  2. 19* Hybrid
  3. 4 iron
  4. 6 iron
  5. 8 iron
  6. 9 iron
  7. Pitching wedge
  8. 52* wedge
  9. 58* wedge
  10. Putter

In the longer irons it's easier for me to fudge the numbers a bit on how far I end up hitting the ball, just because I can either really try to muscle the shorter club if I need the ball to stop or swing easy with the longer club if the ball can roll out. With short irons and wedges swinging harder only goes so far, because it usually sends the spinrate through the roof and negates and distance you might have gained otherwise. It's also where distance control becomes more important, since the vast majority of my approach shots are hit with an 8 iron or less on par 4's (and the 19* hybrid gives me a tool to reach par 5's in 2, I can hit one of those a long ways).

Driver, 5w, 4h, 6-9 irons, pw, sw, putter. I actually have played this way a few times. Why split relatively rare shots you don't make often in a round with multiple clubs? Results of the stripped down approach: not a lot of difference one way or the other for me.
