Hey guys,

Just a quick note, over the last couple years I’ve brought my handicap down from a 16 to an 8. I was golfing really well. I have a little bit of an unorthodox swing. But I get back to a good position and hit the ball well and have good distance. I feel like overthinking and trying a have “perfect” form is ruining my game. Should I just stop overthinrking and play how I’m comfortable?

The best players still do five things:

If your swing does those five things - or you're working toward improving one of those keys - then you're possibly okay.

If you're working on something else, you're likely headed down the wrong path.

I don't guess I will ever get through all the great instruction on TST during my lifetime. More depth and volume than any other online site. This particular article is great! My oron shots are serviceable due to my forgiving clubs, but often are struck toward the toe. This inspires to work on delivering the sweet spot (etc.). Thanks, -Marv

Berty, that's what I did when playing my best. I found what worked for me! Just look at the swings on Tour. Yes, there are guys with the picture perfect swings, but do they win all the time? No! There are some very idiosyncratic swings that compete quite well, and occasionally win on Tour.

Back when I was playing my best, I played my irons a bit farther back in my stance than most would recommend. I also had a bit of an open stance. But, this allowed me to deliver the clubhead into the back of the ball without "digging". When I tried to play the ball more forward, that's what I did!

I think the most successful players figure out what works for them, and look to refine it. I also figure that the most successful instructors don't try to shoehorn everyone into a preconceived mold! They see the student's aptitude, and tailor their instruction accordingly.

"..as long as the golfer has a  comfortable swing, that gets their club face to a playable impact position on the ball...."

I don't remember who said that years ago, but it sounded like good advice at the time.

I've been improving my swing little by little and imho, to me, there's nothing natural or comfortable about the golf swing. I trust video and good pros over what I think feels good/comfortable any day. My golf swing is this feels weird, that feels weird, holy Toledo, that came out better than I thought.

    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
