with courses getting clogged up and most people not realizing you CAN actually replace/remove your head cover when your standing waiting for your playing partner to play off the tee this would save up to 1 min at every tee box in a four ball ( Assuming they all have these dumb head covers )
I have never understood the need for them, you have Titanium heads ( one of the hardest metals known to man ) when taking a shot you try to swing through the sound barrier at a very hard white sphere, and 5 secs later you treat it like a new born baby. The banging together of clubs doesn't wash with me as a bag is big enough to keep woods seperated. I prefer to have my club at the ready and give more thought to my next shot than wondering where I put that rediculous looking Woolly Elephants head. Goons is what I call em, ie people who insist on "protecting" their indestructable titanium heads with Wooly caricatures

I think that most of the headcovers on woods and hybrids are used to protect the finish on the graphite shafts of the woods / hybrids. Iron heads (irons are generally much shorter than woods and hybrids) banging the shafts of woods at best mars the finish, at worst potentially could damage the graphite shaft. Mostly it is cosmetic damage to the shafts.

Plus headcovers are a part of golf tradition. If, like me, you have throwback pom headcovers, they are traditional.

I can think of a lot of other ways to speed up the game...choosing clubs more quickly, etc.

Seriously? it takes a minute to put on a head cover? It takes me 4 maybe 5 seconds. If i accidentally drop the head cover it could take as much as 8 or 9 seconds. Who are the people take take so much time to put on a head cover?

Personally, i take the driver head cover off on the first tee and put it back on after the 18th. Since my 3-wood usually has the head cover on there's nothing else in my bag that would hit my driver.

yeah i will echo the above - the part you try and beat the living daylight out of - the face - is designed for that purpose. The remaining parts of the clubhead are designed to be aesthetically pleasing and aerodynamic/help you hit the ball further/better/straighter etc.

I've never played with anyone who takes more than 10 seconds - and how would you enforce it? A course ranger? Get him to keep people moving instead.

I have NEVER held up play by removing my headcovers... and they are to protect my SHAFTS, not the heads... although I would not want a bunch of skuff marks on the top of my driver either. Also, I would rather not hear the clanging as I walk or ride.

Furthermore, I don't like your tone... it seems like you're just trying to be an as$... my guess is... I play faster than you anyways. Lastly... my headcovers are all UTILITY, no animals or otherwise.

I think a general promotion for fast play is enough. I don't think any course should enforce mundane rules like that. What's next, ban shoes with laces? Cause someone might take an extra 30 seconds to tie his shoes.

I've seen courses give players a reference sheet of pace of play. A sheet with your starting time, and your expected pace of play broken down by the holes. So you know if you don't reach this hole in x amount of minutes, you need to pick up the pace.

Ditto what others have said: I've never held up play goofing around with headcovers. There's always time to do it when someone else is hitting.

There are about a billion other ways to speed up play. This suggestion is, quite frankly, pretty stupid.

P.S. I like to keep my headcovers on because a) I don't like dings or dents, and b) They're tougher to lose or forget when they're on your club.

My head covers protect the shafts of my woods. They take all of 3-5 seconds to replace after the shot. If you can't wait 5 seconds for me to replace a head cover, pick up my bag and walk out of range, then you have issues that go far beyond just pace of play on the golf course.

Head covers ALWAYS stay on when the club is not in use.

Protects against scratching, paint chips and dings.

Why wouldn't you spend an extra 10 seconds to protect your investments?

I have a magnetic head cover so no time is wasted.

I think the tread should be renamed "Ways to speed up play on the golf course"

When I hit my drive I walk to the side of the tee or back to the cart and resheath. It takes virtually no time.

I have a ton of different headcovers but I just got some great magnetic covers for my Driver and Fairway woods this past year. I love 'em and I use 'em. I have iron covers too and use them. I'd like to post this picture of my bag in jfrain2004's honor

If it's taking a minute or two to take off and replace a head cover you need to go back to the range and practice that move.

I use iron and wood covers. The only time somebody waits on me is when they don't realize I've already hit.

Plus my equipment looks like new, except face and sole, because of it.

anyone notice the OP hasn't been back... I think he got a taste of how idiotic his comments were. I don't know if he suspected some people would agree with him, or if he was just trying to be provocative, but either way I don't think he found any allies.

We could continue this thread by analyzing why people insist on carrying a towel with their golf bag when we all know wiping off clubs slows down play, and some people have silly looking towels.

Or maybe we could ban the use of tees, they take time to put in the ground.

How about not letting people wear golf gloves... some people insist on taking them off while putting, which slows play.

LOL!!! Winner!

And just for the record, magnetic head cover here. 5 seconds tops.

    • Day 126: 5/1/24 Putting and chipping practice. Slow motion swings with 8-iron.
    • #4 - 1st hole at Kingsbarns I rolled in a 15 footer for birdie. Showed my caddie an old guy could still play a bit. #3 - 18th hole at Basin Harbor Club, Vergennes, VT. I had played matches against my nephew over the years. He had never beaten me although through the years he had become a long hitting teenage golfer. I was 1 up but bunkered near the 18th green. My nephew had a long putt for birdie. I splashed out of the bunker to 4 feet. He rolled his first putt close and I gave him the par. Sadly for him, I rolled mine in and won our last match. He went off to college and then Europe for a Ph. D. It was our last match. Family champion forever. #2 - First playoff hole in the City of Livonia, MI “65 & Over” division. I rolled in an 8 footer that broke about 4-5 inches. #10 Whispering Willows GC. #1  18th hole at TPC Prestancia, Sarasota, FL. A 4 foot slicing putt for par to beat the prior year’s Member/Guest winners and win the Member/Guest with my father at his club. I was having heart palpitations as I played the final hole solo when my father put two in the water. There was never a better golf sight for me when that ball dove into the hole.
    • Finally, wedges getting somewhere. This one a punch gap from 87 yards to about 12 feet. Contact and ball flight absolute restaurant quality. It's nice when grass comes back.
    • Tiger on the Today show today. At 3:25 he says he's working on keeping his arms in more and rotating his hips better. Nice.
