Hi Everyone,

i just started trying to get serious about golf. I am taking lessons and looking to go from +100 and into low 90’s then, hopefully better.

I have 10 year old Tommy Armour irons (more or less, beginners clubs). They are too short for me, I’m 6’3”. Here’s my issue: I’m not quite good enough yet where clubs can affect my game. So, I’m thinking about. Just getting extensions on my current clubs. However, that will run my $200. Because I’m not very good yet, I don’t want to spend a ton of money on new clubs. So, should I find a set (new or used) for about $500 and get them fitted. Or, stick with the current clubs, get them fitted and focus on getting better. Thoughts? Reccomensations on clubs?

If getting your set extended is going to cost $200, I'd say just get a new set.

Shaft extensions cost a buck 30 each.  You would need to buy shafting epoxy and a pipe cutter (the cheap ones will work on aluminum) but the whole kit, even with a good pipe cutter, wouldn't run more than 80 bucks or so.  If you know a plumber you might be able to borrow one and save half that.  Removing grips, adding extensions, trimming them to length, and re-gripping, is a relatively simple process.  If that doesn't appeal to you that's fine but learning how to alter the length of clubs, and how to install grips, can save you a significant amount over time.  Just don't tell any of your golf friends that you know how to re-grip.

Get a set of used clubs your size for about the same $200 or less.

I started off buying used gear, for the same reason you don’t want to spend that much.

Do you know how much length to your irons you need? Used clubs may be your best bet. I use www.globalgolf.com all the time. You can even search by length.

    • I've been putting whilst looking at the hole and it's definitely helped my distance control
    • I wonder if that is why my home course basically have no stakes now.  Not even markers.  It’s completely up to golfers to remember what is OB and hazard and how things used to be marked.     Even in tournaments, there is no marking and certain areas are played differently by different golfers who either don’t know better or use it to their advantage funny reading thru this with courses that actually have markers
    • is it though?????? "Millions of fans"?????
    • Great post, thanks for the informaiton. I try to avoid adding salt to anything I eat. I tend to add pepper on to my meals as opposed to salt. And I am trying to eat as clean on possible. On golf day, I eat 3 eggs for breakfast (pepper NO salt) and a salad for lunch, with grilled chicken thigs (pepper, garlic, no salt). I have been trying to avoid processed food, but we all slip. I also should have mentioned that the electrolyte packet calls for mixing with 16 oz of water, however I mix in 32 oz of water, so I dilute the electrolyte powder.
    • So if I read the news correctly, the PIF will not fund LIV after this season.  LIV is trying to find new funding and a number of players there are now asking about getting back to the Tour.    I am very, very concerned that Taylor Gooch will not have a place where he can make a jackass out of himself soon
