I believe I understand a sand save to be making par from a green side bunker but I had an unusual situation happen to me today which challenges that thought.

I was on the 15 hole at my home course, a short 256 par 4 with bunkers protecting the green both left and in front.   I hit my drive into the left green side bunker.   My first attempt at a sand save didn't go as planned and I hit the ball about 3 feet, still in the bunker.   I hit the third shot, still in the bunker onto the green and made the putt for par.

Since I didn't get out of the bunker on the first attempt, is this situation not a sand save or because I pared the hole, is it a sand save?

I believe a save would be for Par or better.

If you would hole out from a greenside bunker for Birdie, it would still be a sand save.

If you would have holed out yesterday for "Eagle" it would be a sand save.

I googled it and it appears that your situation would not qualify for a sand save.

(Note: Sand save percentage is calculated by the number of times a player is able to get up-and-down from a greenside bunker, regardless of score.)

Yeah, that's how GameGolf does it, too. I've had a couple of pars on par 5s where I was in greenside sand in 2. Doesn't count as a sand save.

This happened to me yesterday.   Your post answered my question about a slightly different situation than my OP.    I was in the greenside bunker in 2, on in regulation and two putted for par.

Yep.  Up and down.

Admittedly, it tends to lose a bit of the glamour when it’s to save an 8....  :8)

I like "Sandie" better than sand save.  Sounds better.

Out of the bunker in 1 shot and drain the putt! Boom!

so the typical understanding is easy - if I'm in the sand (specifically greenside) - I'm in the hole in 1 (sink the sand shot) or 2 (sand and a putt) shots - that's the easy one.  So it comes down to what "up and down" means now.  so it didn't really clarify.  Is there an official meaning, or just an 'understanding' we use

  • "up" I'd think that would that be specifically a successful sand shot that gets me out of the bunker (at a minimum) - does it have to end up on the green
  • "down" any shot after up that sinks the ball - or does it have to be a putt

so that leaves a couple other options than just the 'usual'

  1. what if I get out of the sand but then chip in from the fringe
  2. what if I get out of the sand and into another bunker and then hole out from there
  3. why not also a fairway bunker - but still down in 2

I'd always previously used it as any time I'm in the sand and save par - so I was way off there.....ie, I 'saved' par from the sand hazard

    • I appreciate that you have taken the time to come back and update. Based on what was previously discussed I feel like the points were; forged, feel good, price, and possibly players distance. If you like the "looks" of those Maxfli irons and if price is a major point, then going straight to the source, Maltby, might make sense. Specifically, the TS3 iron. I was looking into this myself and found some reviews: Fit2YouGolf, Lets Play Thru, and ELITE FIT GOLF. As per your update I found the Maxfli to be ~$1300 fitted the way I wanted. Where the TS3 with the same fitting and assembled by Golfworks was less than $750. I suppose the downside is to actually hit the iron you will need to get lucky and find someone in your golf circle who will let you hit theirs or order a 6 or 7 iron to test. However, the way I look at that is being equivalent to some fittings. If you like the results and buy, then the fitting is free, otherwise the price of the fitting is a sunk cost. If name brand is important, then I submit for your consideration - THE BEST OVERALL IRON of 2024...... FACT !! 😉 A bit tongue in cheek that but also, I feel some good points were discussed.
