How Much Should You Pay For A Putter?

The local shop has close to 100 used putters. Last season,  I tried 30 different ones on their indoor putting green and I found a nice "almost new looking" odyssey 2 Ball viper that I liked for under 100.  I was happy with that and it has helped my putting.

Over $350, but it came with an extensive putter fitting.

Both of my main putters cost about $150.  I bought the first one because although I liked it slightly less, it was $150 and the other was $300.  A year later found the second putter on sale for $150.  Dying for a 3rd putter and willing to spend top dollar this time, just can't decide which one I want and if I'm going to spend top dollar I want it to be the last putter.

Just curious, why do you need a 3rd putter?

One is a blade and one is a mid mallet. They are similar but also different enough that I occasionally swap them out as I think it is good to re-establish feel every so often.  I'd like to have a full mallet to complement the other too.  Plus as I mentioned in another thread if there's anywhere that technology is helping make putters better it's in mallets.

I also have 3 putters. GEL diamond, Yes! Stephanie belly and my current gamer a Clevelland Smartsquare blade. All really nice putters but cant bring myself to get rid of the GEL or the Yes!

Keeping the belly as i'll either get it modified or keep it at 43" for when i can no longer bend as far to putt

“How much should you pay?” questions tend to select responses. How much should you pay for a car? Obviously the guy who paid over a million for his McLaren doesn’t think everyone should; that’s the whole point of having one. Likewise, the guys with the $2k custom Scottys want something exclusive.

 

So it makes sense that most of the responses are $300 or less. If you just want to make putts, and know basically what you need in terms of length and style (mallet, blade, etc.), I don’t think you need to spend more than $100 on ebay. I’ve sold several perfectly serviceable and respectably branded putters for less.

 

Personally, I paid $350 for my Evnroll ER5, which I love. I like it so much that I’m going to spend even more for the black one when it becomes available. It was a subtle difference between the ER5 and my Ping Tyne ($189, I think), that it replaced. But given a choice, I’d choose the Evnroll every time. I can’t afford — and have no desire — to run with the big dogs when it comes to putters. And if I couldn’t afford a $350 putter, I think I’d do ok with any of the ones that I sold. But it’s a hobby, and it could be worse. I could be collecting large stationary engines.

 I paid $250 for one of the new Odyssey Stroke Lab putters last week.
