No sixes! I don't know if I've ever done this before but it was my lowest round since 2012! I would call it a great step towards my goal of breaking par this summer. This round looks a lot like my other rounds this year, the difference being that I turned my 2-3 worst holes into at worst a bogey. Blow up holes are nearly completely mental for me and also completely avoidable. Don't take the hero shot. Don't always take dead aim at the pin. I can nearly always get up and in in 3 strokes from within 135 yards, so worst case scenario find an angle to get within 135 yards. Even if I can only get within 200 yards, with a good lie I am still going to hole out in 3 strokes most of the time.

Nice this is great, I tried something similar today to this and was totally able to produce a draw instead of my normal slice which is cool!

Yes I have taken some serious chunks out of the ground recently. If you look at page 1, you left nearly the same comment on my swing 7 years ago. Its definitely ingrained. I don't feel unbalanced in my swing right now, so I hadn't really checked if my weight wandered back to my heels. But that was a big thing for me in the past and I'll make sure to double check that it is correct. Also is it necessarily bad to get closer to the ball or just hard to be consistent? Or something specifically wrong with the way that I am doing it? For example DJ drops his head somewhat like mine at the same point, and then even more after that. Rory on the other hand drops his head almost none at that point, and then a ton right after the transition. Is there something specifically different they do that makes their moves more repeatable or is it just the many thousands of hours of reps?

What Ball Do You Hit, and Why?
jshots replied to phedrick's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Just bought a dozen Vice Pro Plus to try. Always played Pro V1x but who the f wants to spend much that on balls. The Vice feels great so far, although it seems to get damaged quickly. -
What feeling do you use to stay deep in transition? This is to get your path more "in to out"?

This is a cool one to watch. And this quote: Reporter: "He loves the game?" Earl Woods: "No... it transcends love. He's addicted to greatness. He's addicted to being the best that has ever played the game"

@iacas shared this with me a few years go when I was having trouble with balance and shanks. With your hands crowded into your body it could get very tough to return your club to the ball.
-
Here is the path of the butt of the club through impact. I'm going to experiment with dropping my hands more from the top.

Worked mainly on driver today because it is giving me the most trouble (still frequently slicing the ball as well as straight pulls), and I also started over speed training with some DIY speed sticks I made. I hit a few drivers to start with, averaging 107 mph with a peak of 113 mph. I went through the super speed training protocol #1. Came back to the driver and peaked at 118 mph, wtf. Continued to maintain 113 after that, so clearly I'm leaving some power on the table. A feeling that was helping me get faster speed with the speed sticks as well as seemingly helping with straighter ball flight was to think about pushing my left shoulder up into the air as hard as I can by pushing away from the ground with my left foot. Activate the glutes ;). It feels really good and looks good in the mirror when you do that in slow motion but is hard to translate into the swing. Need to discover what is causing my slice tendency, seems like it would be an over the top move but it isn't super apparent to me here. One thing that I'm super uncomfortable with is my ball position, I don't ever feel like it is in the right place.

Hitting Out of Fairway Bunkers
jshots replied to Cantankerish's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Take an extra club and make a 3/4 swing. I also like to think about the feeling of picking the ball rather than going down after it, which to me means I try to keep my head from dropping vertically as much as possible. -
I'm skeptical of anything these people say.

My Progress w/Overspeed Training Using SuperSpeedGolf
jshots replied to cedrictheo's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
So I decided to build these and they turned out great and cost only $70! They are within 1 gram of the SS weights (though I don't know if they are the same swing weight). Pretty excited to see if I can gain some speed. -
With Rory you can tell when he is feeling good because he looks like he might start skipping at any moment.

The resurrection of my swing thread. Only 2450 days old! I set a goal to break par on 18 holes before I turn 30 in September, which at this point seems kind of crazy. Hopefully posting in this thread regularly will help keep me on track. If you're reading this, let me know what you think! Currently with my Irons, I'm making a lot of thin contact with misses both left and right. Driver my misses are the straight ball slicing right. My thoughts. My head moves down and forward a lot during my backswing. I suspect maybe I've developed this from trying to hit the ball really hard, I compress a lot towards the ball so I can JUMP away from it (see my left foot) to generate as much power as I can. I think this requires great timing which I have been able to achieve in the past so maybe this isn't something to worry so much about. Maybe I will try to see how my contact is by trying to stand taller through my backswing. One of the things I notice with my bad contacts is the feeling of muscling the ball. I don't know how else to explain it but I can feel my arms tensing up through impact, especially my left bicep. What is the correct thing to do here? If at address my arms are straight, how do I get to a good impact position with that much left arm flex, it seems like it would be simpler to get to a good position without so much tension in my arms.

I've noticed it helping. It's a huge time saver when people are moving to their balls on the green and you don't have to wait when you're away. I was surprised when behind a group recently how quickly they were on and off the green and people were making there initial putts with the flag in. It doesn't seem like most people care enough to take the pin in and out depending on the shot.

I feel like if you win the Masters, you deserve it.

Is There Any Non-Anecdotal AimPoint Data?
jshots replied to jshots's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
That is kind of what I was thinking too. Practice ratios should apply to practice purchases not just practice time! That said I'm looking into having a friend machine me some weights for cheap DIY Superspeed sticks so I may end up getting to do both! -
I'm trying to decide if I should take an aimpoint lesson, or buy superspeed golf sticks. One or the other at the moment. Is there any data that shows Aimpoint is actually that much better than visually reading a break? It seems to me that the extra time spent learning how greens break could easily be the reason people see success with aimpoint. I am just a bit skeptical of it I suppose. You still have to gauge the slope, and either visually estimate inches or "arm bend" where there is a ton of room for error.

Making Practice More Relevant to Playing?
jshots replied to Hugh Jars's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I play a game on the range with my last 18 balls. Pick a random club, a target, and a draw/fade/straightish. I go through a full shot routine for each, try to visualize a real shot somewhere on a real course, then I rate each shot and keep a running tally: -1 solid ball contact, correct shape, lands excitingly close to target (aka the Tiger stare down)] 0 decent ball contact, correct shape, not exciting but not bad +1 everything else, bad ball contact, way off target Keeps things fun. I believe it helps me to sort of solidify what I've just worked on in something that sort of more resembles what I'd do on the course.
