  1. It's no longer a penalty when you accidentally move your ball on the putting green. It wasn't a penalty for Zach Johnson because he was in the teeing area, his ball wasn't in play and he wasn't intending to hit the ball. It would have been a penalty if he did it in the general area, penalty area or bunker.
  2. I've been using the Golf Pride CP2 grips for 2+ years now and love them. They have a soft feel, have been great in all weather and last. CP2 Wrap & CP2 Pro · Golf Pride® - #1 Grip on Tour® The CP2 Grip is Golf Pride's softest performance grip. CP2 features a larger lower hand, high-tack rubber and Control Core Technology for more stability.
  3. Good thing this guy didn't have to play with Lee Trevino. Lee Trevino has told the story of the very first time he was paired with Jack Nicklaus during a tournament. Nicklaus was well aware of Trevino's reputation for constant chatter. Trevino liked to talk to his playing partners - or anybody - during rounds, joking, laughing, chatting throughout. Nicklaus didn't. So Nicklaus approached Trevino before their round to make sure Lee knew that Jack preferred not to talk much while playing. "That's OK," Trevino told him, "you don't have to talk, you just have to listen."
  4. You are correct, the US Open exemption is only 10 years. The Open Championship exemption is a minimum of 10 years or until you reach 60, so if someone wins it in their 50's they still are exempt for 10 years.
  5. I usually don't need to re-read a putt that I already read and just saw what it actually did. I want to putt while it's fresh in my memory. Mark it, align it, do my routine and hit it again. I can fix spike marks now if that's a problem, and someone has already stepped on my line at some point before I got there. My group has switched to continuous putting this year and our rounds have been shorter.
  6. Rule 17: Rule 17.1d(2):
  7. I disagree, my experience has shown it to be faster.
  8. I am in love with this golf ball. Just back from Florida and the ball stopped just fine on firm Bermuda greens, and I love the distance I am getting off the tee. The triple track is awesome for lining up my putts.
  9. If everyone just used continuous putting it will speed up play. Putt until the ball is holed and do whatever you want with the flag.. Then the next player can do the same. If the next player wants it out the first person who holed out can get the flag. You can fix spike marks now so stand where ever you want. Most people I have played with are leaving it in if the flag is standing straight up like it should. Our rounds have been faster then before. The only time it should really be an issue is in a real match play situation where continuous putting isn't really allowed.
  10. It's a policy in order to maximize tee times and revenue. Same as the policy that we have the right to pair up twosomes booked within 30 minutes of each other. Nothing worse then having a twosome book at 10:00 on a weekend morning then another twosome books 10:09. Now a foursome comes looking for a tee time and there is nothing available for a couple of hours. Then there is the single who goes out and plays two balls all round. You only pay for one round but you take divots and make ball marks for two people. I understand the new to an area argument and don't know anyone, but if your a decent person you should be able to find some other people to play with pretty quickly. Since we are talking public courses, the other option is to join a men's or women's club there. The restaurant comparison would be to call for a Saturday night reservation at 7:00 for yourself, but insist they they put you at a table for four.
  11. My course does not allow singles to book their own tee time online in a completely open slot. They are welcome to book as a single to any twosome or threesome already booked. Singles are welcome to show up and play as a single in open tee times on the day of play.
  12. Surprised they are even opening the black to the public before the PGA.
  13. I would say Elliot's is more relaxed then 1895 Grille. The Tavern and Ryder Cup Lounge at the Resort are more casual. In the Village there is Drum & Quill and Dugans
  14. Southern Pines is a nice enough course, but it feels more like a municipal course then Pine Needles or Mid Pines. Not sure of your dining tastes or budget by my favorite is Elliott's on Linden for something a bit different and always excellent. He also owns the Sly Fox. Our Menu | Elliott's On Linden Contemporary restaurant for refined, imaginative dishes made with local ingredients & global wines. Ironwood Cafe is a great choice if your schedule allows you to get there for their early bird specials (last page). http://www.ironwoodpinehurst.com/downloads/PDF/menus/spring_menu.pdf

    Lessons?

That's nuts. My Pro charges $330 for a package of 6 half-hour private lessons.

    Lessons?

I highly recommend lessons. I started playing when I was 13, never really took serious lessons but through just playing became a bogey golfer. Played a little high school golf and Division III college. In my early 30's I started taking regular lessons with the same pro and got my handicap down to 10 and was pretty happy with that. My pro passed away suddenly and a new young pro with great teaching credentials took her place. He was Aimpoint Certified so I went to one of the classes and it changed my game for the better. Continued to work with him on my complete game, upped my short game practice time, number of rounds I played, started to play many different courses and got my handicap down as low as 3.5 at the age of 50. It's crept up a bit lately mostly because I don't practice as much as I used too but it's still low enough to get me into some amateur events run by my area golf associations. So the key is to find a pro you like and stick with it, and make sure you practice what they teach you. I used to buy a series of lessons where you would get six 30 minute lessons for the price of five if you prepaid. Spaced them out every two to three weeks so I had time to practice and play in between. I didn't make wholesale changes all at once, just little tweaks here and there. Now I'm mostly on a maintenance plan, that is when something isn't going right and I can't figure it out, I will go back to see him or when he adds some new putting thing I will go to it.
  17. Played it today for the first time and was very pleased. Had a good feel on all shots. Greens were soft this early in the year so the ball stopped fine, will see how it does on some firmer greens in 10 days when I head south.
  18. Rule 13.2 a. Leaving Flagstick in Hole If you make a stroke with the flagstick left in the hole and the ball in motion then hits the flagstick, there is no penalty and the ball must be played as it lies. The decision to have the flagstick in the hole must be made before your stroke, by either leaving the flagstick in the hole or having a removed flagstick put back. In either case, you must not try to gain an advantage by deliberately moving the flagstick to a position other than centred in the hole. If you do so and the ball in motion then hits the flagstick, you get the general penalty. So you are allowed to center it before your stroke but after would not effect that stroke just played. I guess the closest way to tell if any part of the ball is below the hole is to take your scorecard and slide it over the hole from the opposite side of the ball and if it touched the ball before reaching the other side of the hole, part of the ball is below the surface. So back to the OP, if in his determination any part of the ball was below the hole and his opponent or fellow competitors with him don't disagree it is deemed hole.
  19. Now that I'm back at this site after being away for a while time to claim my awards. Hole in One - August 2, 2003 - 176 yards, 5 iron Eagles - 4 that I can remember, latest was in 2016 Broke par - 3 under 68 July 9, 2016 Tournament winner - Stamford Amateur Golf Championship, Senior Flight 2017
  20. Well done, you should go to the 85+ one next year.
  21. Yep. https://www.mgagolf.org/sites/default/files/Rules Quiz Answers 3-19_0.pdf Quite a poor job by my association.
  22. There are renderings on the website about the renovations. No surprise that the window A/C units will be replaced by a modern HVAC system. The Manor Inn | Hotels & Accommodations | Pinehurst Resort Located a short walk from the Carolina Hotel is the Manor Inn. Built in 1923, it features 42 guest rooms including suites and adjoining rooms.
  23. Looks like the original link is no longer working so here is the pdf version. https://www.mgagolf.org/sites/default/files/MGA Rules Quiz 2019 v3.5.pdf And the answers https://www.mgagolf.org/sites/default/files/Rules Quiz Answers 3-15.pdf
  24. Thistle Dhu is a lot of fun, find the time, it's free. Haven't heard what exactly they are doing at the Manor Inn but I would assume it will come out nice. If you're not really concerned about saving a little money I'd stick with the Carolina.
