Yes, you should concede some putts in casual rounds. Just use common sense, and if it's a putt you think you could miss...don't give it away.

Even in casual rounds, and especially if it's with golfers you don't know well, before you pick a ball up for someone you should ask if they want to putt it out. Conceded tap-ins can speed up play but some people (like me) want to putt anything over a few inches so that they can be sure their score reflects their play (I'm quite capable of missing a two footer).

Most golfers I've played with will concede putts but offer you the opportunity to putt it out.  Usually they will say something like, "That's good with me, but feel free to putt it if you want the practice".

One of my friends and I will concede putts to each other that are less than 10" from the hole and allow each other to putt out, but our rule is if we choose to putt out and miss, the stroke counts and the ball is not considered in the hole.

I requested we add this to our playing rules because I was tired of waiting and watching him approach the conceded putt like a real putt and then missing it.

Yes, "That's good with me" is a pretty standard response and gives the other player the option to putt out if they like.  As many people have said, always ask before knocking a ball back.  Also if you have a small bet within the group, it depends on the group.  In those cases, I don't really give putts unless it's inside a foot.

Distance isn't always the main factor, if you're on slick greens with some tilt- that 18" putt isn't necessarily a "gimmie".  Just use common sense and be consistent.  (Match play is a different monster and has some strategy to it).

Or if you want a real score. ;-)

I've never understood why, in a casual round, anyone other than the player himself should declare or claim a gimme.

But then again, what the hell do I know?
