My grandfather was in the oil business and my mother spent some of her time growing up in Iran and learned to play golf there.

On the course she used to play was a hole with a gas flare just beside it, that would occasionally come into play with a short drive!

I haven't played a huge variety of courses so don't have anything that interesting but anyone out there with any interesting stories?

Thought of a couple. One course I used to play at infrequently was inside, and around a racecourse (for horses), that was one obstacle. The fairway on one of the other holes was a sizeable grass airstrip (for arriving owners, trainers, jockeys etc) with the tees on one side and the green the other, around 400yrds up. We were always told to watch out for aircraft, though I believe the course was closed when aircraft were due in

Skunks.

play twilight at a course near the house and there are always skunks around 17 and 18. hit my approach a couple yards over the 18th green the other night and walked up to find it being inspected by one of my stripey little friends.

Is that an unplayable or interfereance by outside agency?

Landed close to a snapping turtle once. But was still able to take the shot.

Had a gun pulled on us once but that was between holes so that wasn't really an obstacle.

I've touched on this in another thread and I'm sure others have had to deal with this too. Swans. Big. Angry. Swans.

Most courses usually have their share of ducks, geese, swans and other bird life. Now the difference is ducks and most geese will get out of the way when you approach. Swans, however, do not. Swans will stand their ground. Swans WILL fight you. Especially when you almost hit them with an approach shot and your ball is chilling 3 feet away from one. Your ball is in their territory now. I know this from experience.

HA! That's funny.

We have a Geese problem this year. They're all over the place. Mostly they just scurry away, but they've been getting braver and braver. Nothing like being attacked by a swan though. Goodness.

At a course I regularly play at there is a short par 3, and you have to hit over a bridge and the green is on the other side.

There is a rural nine hole I occasionally play that has a fully functional coke machine in the fairway. It's not in the middle but it's in play. Same course, same hole, a pissed off dog got on the course and tried to attack me. He wasn't stupid though and recognized I had weapons. Dangerous enough I had to let the owners of the course know about it.

Oh ya i forgot, when I was in mexico my ball landed about 5-10 feet from a crocodile, I just stared at him during my pre-shot routine until I had to swing, that was really scary.

No animals involved, but Rhos on Sea golf course in Wales is a links course, with at least two greens which are just big volcano-style craters raised out of the ground. You have to hit it into them, but the nice bit is that everything collects towards the hole! Really bizarre

Swans are vicious. We have one (used to be two) on my home course. Get too close and they start hissing. They can make a mess of your shoes too.....worse than geese.

The biggest obstacles that I've found is they always put the holes in the wrong spot. Right where my ball isn't going.....

We saw a caterpillar on the green the other day, and one of the guys I was playing with said it was a "giant moth", the thing was lime green, around 6" long, and had horns on it's head. I have never seen anything like it before, it was huge and looked like something out of the movie Men In Black. We also have the Geese and Black Snakes to deal with at this course.

See, that's why every time I fantasise about moving to an exotic location, I remember why I like England - IT'S SAFE!

Mind you those Canada Geese are vicious little sods
