I'm thinking about joining the golf club at our local Army base.

It is a very sweet 27 hole layout designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. It is a well bunkered affair with water on many holes....in fact there is one true island green par 3 and a par four with the green jutting well out into the water.

The course is maintained very well and hosts many tournaments.

There is a very nice practice facility, too.

It is walking friendly and there is always someone to get a game with.

The greens have a lot of character and roll smoother than most courses in the area.

It takes me less than 15 mins to drive to the main gate and then 10-15 mins through the base to the course.

I really like the fact that there are 3 different nines each with their own challanges and feel.

I play at Moffett Field course because I get a work discount sometimes. But doesn't compare to what you're describing. Sounds like a nice place.

Military golf courses are as good as the MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) operations are on base. Most are well kept.

There are two courses at an Air Force base near-by... an officer's and enlisted club each. While I don't have direct access, I have played both courses. One was recently rennovated to good reviews. For military, government workers, and dependents the value of a membership is usually pretty good. My brother is a member of the officer's club by virtue of his being a gov't research PhD. He loves it!

I play at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, VA about 8 or 9 times a year. I also play NAB Little Creek about 1 or 2 times a year. Oceana has two courses. The Hornet is a fairly decent course. They always have tournaments and, economically speaking, they are very attractive. Usually $45 includes green fees, cart, prize fund, and a good meal.

Yes, we have 54 holes on 2 different military bases, 2 18 hole courses at the Army Base, and an 18 hole course at the Air Force Base, both are well laid out and in GREAT condition...well for Alaska conditions . One of the courses is the 49th (or 50th, can't remember) hardest course in America, it's called Moose Run Creek Course.

Here's what I play:

I think I'm gonna join when I get the funds free to do so.

I can play there annually for 1/3 the other courses in the area.....and not feel like I'm playing a budget course...it really is nice quality.

Sounds like you're talking about Gordon Lakes. I've played it...when I was a med student, I spent some time at Eisenhower.

You're right, it's a fantastic golf course. Someone told me that Jones and/or Mackenzie actually designed it, as a gift to the Army soldiers who would volunteer and otherwise support the Masters Tournament. Don't know if this is true.

It's challenging, as I remember.

There used to be a little 9 hole course on Ft. Gordon, as well, separate from Gordon Lakes. Short holes, most of them, I think. It was a pretty rough, non-irrigated thing, but had some decent holes and was pretty fun to play.

I've played most of my golf on military base courses, and am very comfortable on them. In general, they are very similar to city/county public golf courses. Some are nicer, because they aren't played as much as public/muny courses, but some are. Nice mixture of people playing, including lots of young troops, beginners, etc.

It's almost always a bargain to join, too.

I say sign up! You'll love it.

Gordon Lakes is a nice course. Where else have you looked at joining? A few local courses offer attractive membership rates: Pointe South, Applewood, the Cabbage Patch. Applewood is probably the cheapest, but it's a pretty long drive depending upon where you live in Augusta.

Fitzsimmons G.C. in Aurora, CO – designed by the Army Corps of Engineers. It’s not especially challenging, but it is both inexpensive ($22 to walk 18) and close. Reportedly, Ike liked it…. Probably because it is not that challenging.

Grew up AF and pretty much learned how to play at Langley AFB. Haven't played there since I was a kid, and from what I understand they just reopened the other 18 after digging up some old live ordnance, talk about a hazard

I considered Rocky Branch ( or "Golf De L" as it is now known), Midland Valley, Jones Creek (was a member there ten years ago) and Bartram Trail.

Joens Creek would be the closest....but a little more than my golfing budget will allow right now. It certainly isn't a walkers course, either. I enjoy hunting and fishing and most of my hobby funds go there....so I have to be reasonable on golf. I have a buddy who is already a member at Gordon Lakes and the recent rounds there have left me with a huge appreciation for the course quality. It is in awesome shape. My favorite venue would be either Mount Vintage (was a member there shortly ) or the River course. The problem with both of those is again....budget. I'd have to give up other fun stuff and I'd not be able to play other courses with my buddies when they go out for golf outings. Applewood, Pointe South and Goshen are all fun tracks that I like....just too far of a drive for a "home" course.

I use to play Gordon Lakes all the time when I was stationed there, it is a very nice and challenging course. I would get a membership there if I ever moved back that way, definitely worth the price.
