Uttered these two sentences today after the 7th hole, on our way to the teebox of a short par 3 over water that I have hit GIR every time out this year:

"Well, at least I have kept the number 10 off my card."

"I'm past the point where I am afraid to hit over water."

ENTER TIN CUP

I put no fewer than 5 balls in the water. I stopped counting when I realized I had used the last of my balls and needed to start borrowing from my Dad. I finally gave up the ghost when I managed to put one in a greenside bunker.

Had I just bogeyed that hole (averaging 4.4 on that hole this year), I would have had a semi-respectable round. I hit only 1 fairway and no GIR, but other than some flubbed pitches and a 3 putt, I was playing pretty well. I switched back to my old blade putter and sunk a lot of 10+ foot putts, too. It was like when Anton Ego takes his first bite of Chef Remmy's Ratatouille...I just felt at home. Seriously considering just regripping it now instead of replacing it.

I gotta go buy some golf balls...

I guess that is golf, for ya.

This weekend was not a good weekend for golf. Two others where I work (both better players than I) said they played pooly as well. I'll never drown 5 balls on a hole, but let's just say I was pulling balls from back lawns of homes, lost balls in the rough, rolled into a couple of ditches for unplayables, hit some rocks and ended up OB ... and managed to card a NINTY-SIX on Sunday!

Yes, the golf Gods were NOT kind this weekend!

Before today my scores on the hole were: 3,4,3,3,3,5 which equals 3.5 strokes per hole with 5/6 GIR. I forgot about the 5 from that hole I posted in my first round there in June. Today's 10 (after my bunker shot I 2 putted, but it was all academic at that point) bumped up my average to 4.4.

Also, it should be noted that there was nobody at all behind us. I never go into Tin Cup mode if it will hold up pace of play.

Yep, never fails. Saturday I made the absolutely stupid comment after 15 holes, "I haven't made a bogey today." And I immediately made a bogey on the very next hole. Crap!

The same thing goes for other sports. Did you ever see a pitcher who has taken a no hitter into the late innings? Totally alone on the bench, noone will even talk to him.

Mark Buehrle of the White Sox no-hit the Royals (I think it was the Royals, at least) last season and he told the guys on the bench specifically to not do any of the jinx stuff. He told them not to leave him alone and made sure to talk about it while it was happening.

Radio broadcaster Ed Farmer (former pitcher), however, made sure not to mention the fact that he had a no-no, which - as a listener - I hate. I have been listening to baseball on the radio long enough to figure it out on my own, but to someone who hasn't may not understand what "he's faced the minimum" means

Now that I think of it, it was the Rangers, not the Royals. Sammy Sosa reached on a walk and was picked off, which is how he only faced 27 batters.

Off Topic: Facing the minimum batters means they are in line for a perfect game... not a no hitter. You can talk about a no hitter... but never talk about a perfect game.

Yup...you riled up the golf gods for real. They conspired against you and had a few laughs as a result.

I've found that it's great to have fond memories of a hole when stepping up to the box....but at some point you gotta snap out of it. Confidence is great, but you have to focus hard on what the conditions are in the present.

I got burned on a par 3 hole on my last round. I thought of the pin high shot I hit the previous round....hit 9 iron flush....to about 6'. I pulled the same club and it wasn't enough to reach the proper spot. I three putted as a result of not staying in the present when thinking yardages and club selection.

Yea, yesterday I was on 16 tee thinking "If I par in , I'll shoot 78"........I shot 81.

This season I gave up pushing the envelope on this one; I won't add up my scores until I'm done playing! I get what I get, and I know if I'm haveing a good or bad round, just not the score. No sense in my taking a chance from the golf gods!

If you're going to "Well, actually" somebody, please be right: someone could single and be thrown out stealing or going for an extra base, someone could hit into a double play, or cause interference, or be picked off, etc. Still the minimum number of batters faced, and nowhere near perfect or a no-hitter.

Yeah maybe you missed the part where I mentioned Buehrle walked Sammy Sosa and then picked him off of first. He still faced only 27 batters without allowing a hit.

Correct... but the line ... so and so has faced the minimum number of batters tonight by an announcer is their way of saying the pitcher has a perfect game going. Its superstition to not talk about it... of course there are ways to face the minimum and not have a perfect game.
