Yesterday I hit my best ever drive (about 290 meters) 105 meters short of a long par 4.
I proceeded to skull my gap wedge which actually managed to stay on the green then 4 putted for a double bogey.

Yesterday, was playing 9 holes by myself and was 2 under after 5, came to the 6th (par 5, but I played it off the ladies as a 460 yard par four) and hit probably the best drive I have hit this month, carried the tree's 250 yards away comfortably, straight down the middle and the ball was never to be found.... led to my highest score of an effective NR.

I teed off on the tenth hole this weekend. About 525 yard par 5. Start off with a 250 yard drive just into the right rough. Then hit a great 4 iron to about 30 yard away. Then I shorted a lob wedge into the sand. Skulled it out of the bunker and flew over the green. Topped it about 2 feet. Finally on the green in 6 but still with about 30 feet to go. Then a three putt for quadruple bogie after a great first 2 shots.

played a tough 9 hole course this weekend, and the 7th hole is the #1 handicap. it's a 360 yard par 4 with a VERY shallow green and thick ruff off the back and traps up front. I hit a four iron about 215 leaving me 145 into the green which is up hill. Playing with somebody who knew the course he said I needed an extra club, so I pulled a 7 iron and hit it clean and over the green, my chip landed on the green but rolled through it, my next chip left it 7' short where I missed my putt. so two nice shots, next to the hole chip and a putt for par end up with a double.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

On a true birdie hole, 327 yard par 4, I crushed a drive right down the left half of the fairway taking out the greenside traps middle and right. I was 77 yards to a short pin. Pulled out the LW, which full-on will fly 60 yards. Completely flushed the LW and came up 15 yards short of the pin. Mistake #1.

Trying to make good on the birdie, chipped PAST the hole leaving a severe downhill par putt. Mistake #2. Par putt slides by a good 6' and two putts coming back. Mistake #3.

This is a great example of turning a potential birdie into a real-life DOUBLE through poor shot management.

Yesterday, 270 drive down the middle on the par-4 9th. Fat 8-iron in to the front trap. Skulled a SW dead right and almost killed my buddy. 40 foot chip straight down a hill. Hit it 10 feet and it stops almost dead on the hill. 3 putt from there. Sucking sucks.

I was often kidded in the past because of my driving ability combined with the lack of a short game. I played with a number of great players including a few that even played on tour and they delighted in saying "Nice drive Danny!" everytime I hit a drive 300 yards then fatted or thinned a wedge and missed the green. It became a catch phrase for anytime someone hit a great drive then screwed up their second shot. One of my pro buddies even told me once that there was not a way possible for someone to hit the driver as I did and yet score that bad.

I have, fortunately, over the years developed a decent short game, and even a pretty good wedge game so those taunts have since quieted, but there is still nothing worse than crushing a drive 300 yards down the center of the fairway only to make bogey or worse.

On a 330 yard par 4, I crush a drive down the right side of the fairway leaving me with a 40 yard wedge into a tough green with a false front. Pin is in the right front just over a ridge leading to that false front. Trying to be cute, I take a 60 degree wedge and try to drop the ball just over the ridge "Phil Mickelson" style. I leave it just short of the green, and I still have to negotiate that ridge to get to the pin.
Now that I've put myself in a bad position already do I: A) just get it on the green ANYWHERE and take my lumps or B) try the same type of chip again?
Since I'm posting to this thread, you should know I chose Option B. I don't put enough on the second chip to get it over the hill, it rolls back down about a foot behind where I just hit. Now laying 3, I take putter and putt it over the ridge and it rolls about 12 feet past the hole. A sweet 2-putt from there gives me a crowd-pleasing double-bogey.

Event: Presidents Cup
Situation: Dogleg right, water down the right to the green. Water front & right of green.
My Plight: Hit a great drive, center of fairway. Decided to go for it. Must carry 210 yards to green.
Result: Beautiful 5 wood to within 12 feet.
However: Too excited. 6 putt for a Snowman.

there's a very tough par 4 on my local course - it's about 315 yards long, but there is not a single level spot on the entire hole other than the tee box. the entire thing slopes sharply down to the right. the fairway is at most 30 yards wide with a neighborhood up the right side and woods up the left side. basically, you need to pull out a 7 iron or something and just try to keep yourself in the middle by hitting the left side (top) of the fairway and letting it roll relatively center.

well, three or four years ago, i was out by myself one wintry day and i caught up to a group of school kids and their phys ed instructor out playing some golf on a field trip or something. and of course, they were going to let me play through on the aforementioned hole. i'd only been playing about two years at that point, so i didn't understand/didn't care about the idea of playing it safe - by god, i was going to hit a driver. and as fate would have it, i busted out one of the best drives of my life - straight up the left side, landed on the top of the slope, rolled down to within 30 yards right in front of the green.

now like i said, it was winter, and it'd rained the day before, so the fairway was pretty soggy. i got out the wedge and was just going to gently pitch it up aaaaand... i hit it fat. real fat. the ball went about 3 feet. i thought to myself "i'm so glad i'm almost 300 yards away from those people so that they hopefully didn't see that." next shot, i wanted to make sure i didn't hit it fat, so, of course, i topped it and rolled it across to the wrong side of the green. follow that up with a 3 putt (the green slopes about as badly as the fairway itself, and i had to come down), i had myself a double bogey when i'd drove the ball to within 30 yards.

This thread makes me feel better because i do this stuff all the time.

This isn't exactly the same but I have never made a birdie, lots of pars, no birdies. But once i was playing by myself and on a par 5, 513yard hole. i slice my first drive way into the woods. Now i'm hitting 3 from the tees and its a beautiful drive followed by a nice 5i to about 30 yards out. I chip it onto the green and drain an 8-10 foot putt for the best looking bogey i've ever shot.

4 inches...Hate to pour salt on the wound, but what happened?

I was playing my home course early in the morning in a rainstorm. I was dumb enough for being out there in the first place and since I didn't have a witness the ace wouldn't have counted, anyway.

I was teeing off on one of the longer par-3s on our course (about 180 from my tees) and it was so rainy and even a little foggy that I just went up there with an old Taylor Made Raylor (roughly a 4-wood) and hit a low liner in the general direction of the green. I thought I could see it roll up close to the pin but I couldn't tell. I'd already decided to go to the clubhouse at the turn so I was just trying to get through. When I got up to the green, the ball was sitting 4 inches to the right of the hole. I could even see the trail of water the ball had displaced as it had rolled onto the green and by the hole -- it came within less than an inch of dropping in. Well, that particular par-3 has a steeply pitched green, back to front, so I was putting sideways relative to the break. I needed to hit it firm to take the break out of it but I was already shaken up by the near-ace, and not only did I not hit it hard enough to get through the break, there was so much water in the grass that I didn't account for how much the ball would slow down. I lipped out on the low side of the hole. Second putt was 2 inches, which I thankfully made. Jess
