An older golfer has been going out of his way to help me learn the game and I'd like to get him something for Christmas. He's a longtime golfer (about 70 years old) and probably has everything he needs, so I need some suggestions.

I agree with the Scotch Whisky suggestion. I'd say go with The Balvenie 12 year, it costs the same as a dozen ProV1s, but it's so much more valuable...

I recently bought my Stepdad a dozen personalized golfballs from golfballs.com. They have a picture of his face on them so it is kind of a joke, but regardless I can't tell you much he loves them. He said he is only going to use them for putting so he doesn't crush his own face. I haven't seen them yet, but my stepdad and my brother said they came out very well. You can pick whatever type of ball you want as well. Good luck!

Though it's somewhat generic, a gift card is a great idea. But a hand written thank you note would fix that problem. Do you have a price range you are looking at? That might help everyone suggest specific items.

But if he has been golfing a while, he might have specific tastes that only a gift card could fit.

To me, a gift card is a gift saying, "Well, I checked you off my list." It shows no thought as gift. Of course, a gift card is a great gift in a different kind of way which I won't get into. But, if he's a long time golfer at 70 years old, what do you think he'll get at the store? More balls? Clubs? He's been playing the game for a long time and I'm sure he's been to the store a few times.

I think a personalized golf ball, towel, etc. would be the ideal choice. A few years ago, we refinished my grandfather's old wedge from the 60's and made it look exactly how it looked back then. We got it engraved with my grandfather's name, from us (his grandchildren, and the year). We added a nice card to it as well and my grandfather absolutely loved it. It's now hanging in his living room in a case.

First of all, I would like to commend you on your attitude and thought in the matter. It really speaks of your character that you are wanting to do something special. I would say the handwritten note is a must, no matter what gift you give him. In fact, that will probably mean the most to him. If you get a chance to play with him again, or are around him, maybe discreetly see what kind of equipment he plays with, i.e. balls, clubs, etc and then you can maybe base your decision on what you find out. Good luck and be sure and let us know what you come up with and his reaction.

Ok, here's what he got. I went to the best bakery in town and bought him a stollen, a German Christmas cake. $20 and very good, as good or better than the cakes made by Harry & David and such.

This is a good idea. When my wife & I got married we had golf tourney the next day.. Just before we were due to start teeing off, my brother started handing out personalized golf balls he had made up. They read Patrick & Diane, the date of the wedding, sitting below a picture of a scull & crossbones! Very original, everybody got a kick out of it and I still have one displayed in our family room.

my get up and go musta got up and went..

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I'm not a big fan of gift cards, seems like a lazy gift.

I think a set of knit headcovers is pretty cool.  Lots of guys seem to like them, and they're in that "want to but don't need to" range where guys don't have them.

    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
