Yeah, I used to play, and funnily enough I nearly played pretty near you too. At one point I was going to play for a team in Flint, can't remember their name now.

I played my best at high school and played county level rugby, and played in a Daily Mail cup winning team, which is a pretty big schools competition in England. The final is at Twickenham which is pretty awesome! I trained with England schoolboy teams, but I was never quite at the level to get picked for the team, and after getting in a bit of trouble, I just stopped playing rugby and concentrated more on golf.

*Edit - I meant to ask, which high school, and what position do you play?

Are you talking about the Flint Rogues? I play loosehead prop for Brighton High.

Just missed getting the tackle.

I cannot stand getting tackled that high and not getting called for it.

Yeah, I think it was the Flint rogues.
Never ended up there though. I was trying to come over with a teammate from SA. He ended up playing for Western Province in the Vodacom cup that season, and I ended up staying with my club over here.

If I can find any of my old photos I might put some up too.

Whats HS rugby in MI like? If I find myself living in that part of the world again, I'd be tempted to get involved in coaching a team.

Its fun. Im pretty sure my HS coaches run us more then any other team in MI. Thats basically all we do. Its alot slower paced then most places and not as much scoring IMO. Most kids that play are still learning the game and figuring out what to do. I got ahold of it all really quick cause I played some pickup games after school with the team before the season started so i woulsd know if i liked it or not.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well being from New Zealand it's actually illegal not to play rugby here .

I started playing in high school and captained the 1st XV in my last year. Haven't taken it as seriously since but my team won the Canterbury country colts division last year which was pretty awesome. Still tossing up whether or not to play again this year. The weather stays good enough for golf in winter (snows about once a year) so might just stick with that.

My oldest son played rugby for The Bowling Green State University (Ohio) Fighting Falcons in 2001 and 2002. He also went with the team to South Africa in '02 for some kind of world tournament.

My son has done the "Naked Zulu Warrior" in two different continents, and two different hemispheres!

Mother and I are SO proud!!!!!

Does YOUR drinking club have a Rugby problem too????

My son plays HS rugby. He is on both the JV side and the Frosh/soph side as a a winger. He had a great game on Sunday on the FS side. He scored a try and set up two more. Then he sat out the second half to let some of the freshmen kids play. I've got him in golf lessons, but it's hard getting him to the range between rugby practices and games. (Sorry for the thread necromancy).

We started a women's team in college.  Many of them used to come to our games and we thought they should be playing.  They got pretty good.

Scrumhalf here. Played it in college 40 years ago. Never even saw a game before I got there, but the Rugby Club was the social center of the school so I gave it a go. Loved it.

A teammate once made it into that Faces in the Crowd thing in Sports Illustrated for scoring a bunch of points in a 7 on 7 tournament.

One of our Chemistry Professors started the club and was our coach.  I was a blast.  Alas, my knees only held up three years after college so I had to stop playing.

Started at Univ of Iowa and played 3 great years.  Then onto Ohio State and a few more seasons.  Went to Sugar Bowl Rugby Tourney in  New Orleans from Iowa City one early Feb, just at Carnival.  Had a long tiring weekend and lost the title match to Pensacola Naval Air Station.  I was always front row, ether side.  Always enjoyed the game, the prep and the party.  Thrilling years in the midwest for me.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
