Help! My shots are too high!

So, I played this last week in some high wind and I've noticed I have a problem I can't figure out. All of my shots, from wedges on down to the driver, are very high in respect to those I play with.

Normally, it's not a major problem except for the longer clubs since I still get good distance and control with it. However, I can't lower my drive or any other shot for that matter. I move the ball back in my stance, I try to keep my wrists cocked longer, etc...The more I try and fix the issue the worse it gets. I moved the ball back and tee'd it lower for a drive and actually hit the drive higher.

Does anyone have some tips for this? Hitting into the wind was killing me when I couldn't hit a lower shot.

I've got the same "problem". For my irons I love the high balls. Distance control is very easy, the balls drop dead when they land. Only club I'd like a lower flight with is the driver as I get virtually no roll at all. Carry 220 then stop dead.

For me I believe it's because of casting, or early release of the club. I've seen that I do this on videos of my swing. This makes the club come ahead of the hands before impact and increasing the angle. I still hit the ball as far as those I play with, but believe I could get more distance out of it by preventing the pre-release.

I'll be trying this drill the next time I practice: szKGxNePxg0 (Youtube code).

Could also have to do with the shafts of your clubs. Different shafts give different ball flight, high, low and medium. I've hit many different shafts and hit it high with all of them.

You could have the lofts of your irons bent alittle stronger, and/or look into different shafts. Some clubs just hit the ball higher, and they don't mesh well with your swing.

Sounds to me like you are adding loft at impact by allowing the clubhead to pass your hands. You should go see a pro to fix yourself up. No amount of equipment change can fix that swing flaw.

The best thing to do is when hitting into wind take 1-2 clubs longer and swing easier. I also have always had a very high ball flight through the bag (except by putter, which I typically can keep below the wind ). I saw a tip from Tom Watson on Playing Lessons from the Pros (on The Golf Channel) and he talked about that and it does work well. Then again, I guess Tom knows what he's talking about since he's been known to win a few times in the wind.

On most days you should embrace that high ball flight because it helps the ball land softly and helps drives stay playable.

This used to be me! I used to be a sweeper and hit the ball way up high.

You might be scooping the ball at the bottom of the swing if its a consistant problem in all of your clubs. When you scoop the ball its usally because youre swinging below the plane. Try a couple of shots at the range with your hands higher at address and feel like youre throwing a sidearmed baseball at whatever your target is. See if the ball comes down.

Another thing I thought of, is the ball you're using. Some balls fly higher (and usually with less spin). Usually the cheaper balls.

Casting isn't going to cause the effect described.

IF you hit it decently when you cast, you aren't going to get a steepling, high flight which stops dead on landing. To the OP, do you have any idea what your attack angle is? If you're very steep coming in to the ball you're likely to get a lot of elevation. Hit large divots? Get many skied/pop-up drives? Check your iron lofts but if you're doing it with all shots, that's probably not it. "I moved the ball back and tee'd it lower for a drive and actually hit the drive higher." Move it back == steeper attack == more back spin == more height. Tee it down == often the same. Bizarre as it may seem, try teeing your driver higher, ball near left (if right handed) instep and concentrate on trying to sweep the ball off the top of the tee. If you can leave the tee in the ground you're doing well.

I think it may have been Ben who said it, but you might need to move the ball forward in your stance.

It sounds weird, but it's something I'm kind of working on now. I played the ball back and to hit it I kind of had to flip at it a little with the hands and my body and weight never really got ahead of the golf ball.

Move the ball forward, and move forward with the hips to get to it, and you'll hit the ball with a more descending, de-lofted blow.

Possibly. Or maybe that's not your problem. Could also be a number of other things. Shaft flex is okay?

I had the same problem, I had a 9* stiff shaft LOW KICK Cobra driver, I was advised that I should go back to a Reg flex and a MID KICK shaft, I couldn't get a 9* one so I demo'd a 10.5 R Mid Kick and I was hitting that almost 30-40 yds farther due to A LOT lower tradjectory.
I didn't make sense to me at first, hitting a 10.5* lower that the 9* but it is all in the kick of the shaft.

Needless to say I bought it

Have to agree with the person who said this is a swing problem not an equipment problem. All pros and good golfers hit irons with hands ahead of the club face in a "leaning hockey stick" position, with the club face slightly de-lofted. The ball should be positioned just behind the lowest point of your swing so that it is contacted with a very slightly downward blow. Irons that are hit too high are hit with the club face ahead of the hands and the ball too far forward. This is a basic swing problem you have to solve to progress in your game.

I've heard the same thing. You'd have to change the swing for this to work if you normally hit the ball more back in the stance. With the normal swing you would top the ball pretty good. Moving the ball forward could help learning to come better through the ball, but you'd have to make some changes too in the swing.

Casting isn't going to cause the effect described.

I don't agree. Here's a video of Tiger swinging, hands well in front of the ball, coming down and through the ball.

Here's a video of my swing where I'm casting. For me, it looks like I'm adding loft while he is decreasing loft.

Put the ball back in your stance, only follow though shoulder high... and dammit , don't hit is so high

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee
