Why when you see a 250-260yd drive, it's a bomb!

Just watched Rocco talking about his driving average (280yds) and if he can hit the fairways WITH 280yd drives this week, he will contend. Which led me to my subject line, a 250-260 yd drive is a really long drive...

It led me to think how soooo many people think they hit the ball a lot farther than they really do. Here is a PGA pro averaging 280yds and I see so many posts (not too many on this site) about guys who think they hot it 300.

Do you have firends that think they hit really far? Get a Sky Caddie and use the "MARK" ball feature and watch the look of dissapointment when you get to their balls.

A guy drive the ball with tailwind into a down sloping fairway ONCE for 300 yards and that becomes his new average.

Ah I love doing that to my distance-challenged friends who have an uncontrollable urge to lie about their driving distances, eventually believing in what they are saying. I've done the MARK button on the skycaddie before and my average driving distance for 3 rounds is 270-280. I have a friend who claims he averages 290 yards. I went out and played with him that day, and he was hitting the ball great, and I was hitting it average. I outdrove him by 30-50 yards every time. I know I don't hit it 300-330 consistently. Maybe one in every 5 drives is in that range. He was devastated once he found out how far he hit it.

Truth can be the biggest pain. Its not always about driving distance though. It doesn't matter how you get the job done, as long as it gets done, and done right.

Nobody I play with brags about their driving distances fortunately. Although that's possibly because 150 metres into the trees isn't a lot to brag about! Amongst the group of guys I play with we don't really brag about score or who beat who, mostly we're out there to have fun and everyone knows that each of us is only concerned about their own goals and score, so who can out-drive who doesn't matter.

The only time I remember someone bragging about how far they hit it in a non-joking manner was when I was playing in a pair with one of the regular foursome, I just told him that one of the other guys hits it past there all the time (which is true) and that shut him up.

What boggles my mind is that these players can't do simple math to figure out their distances. Generally if you have a 400 yard hole and have 150 left you hit a 250 yard drive. You have to be pretty bad at math to actually think you drive the ball further than you do. I know most of these people know it deep down but say something different.

I've been on a few courses that have completely incorrect yardages, always inflating the yardage. Sometimes it is that the yardage would be right if the tee boxes were as far back as they could go, but they are always setup 20 yards ahead of that. Sometimes they are just laughably fabricated.

Two weekends ago, I hit my 3 hybrid off the tee onto a flat fairway and found my ball between the 150 yard markers.

Scorecard said it was a 425 yard hole from the tee I was playing. I'm pretty sure I didn't hit a 275 yard drive with a 21* hybrid. Can't always trust what's written on the scorecard and staked on the course.

a 250-260 yd drive is a really long drive...

i mark mine and know how far i hit i will not saybut my distences are checked often by gps to know how far they are and most people will tend to think 260 is a long way.........

same here courses are wierd like that i have a gps to know how far things really are and some courses are 20-40 yds shorter than they say ive seen one play 100 yds shorter than it said

I average about 230 on wet fairways and 250 on normal fairways. I've hit a 300 yard drive but that is nowhere near my average. I just think some of these people flush a drive on a favorable wind going downhill and think that it's their driving average.

When the fairways are wet, those times are when I wish I had a more loft on my driver. I lost a lot of carry lately and it's been replaced with the roll. UGH!!!

yea this is definitely true, on the last round i played i felt like i was driving the ball really well, and to watch the drives fly i figured, well thats GOTTA be almost 300 yards, and when i figured out the yardage according to the hundred yard marker, i was about 80 yards from the green, on a 350 yard hole, so i mean thats only a 270 yard drive which felt and looked like 300+.... numbers are numbers.... i seem to flub the approach shot after these 270 yard drives anyways lol

This is so True! I consider myself a long-ball hitter compared to the average golfer. The other day I bombed a drive and decided I needed to measure it...255 yards via my sky caddie. I was in disbelief. I can't imagine the pro's flying it 50 yards past where I hit it.

I will say that the pro's seem to get much more roll than I typically do on my home course. But when it is dry I can get it to 290 with some roll. At least that make me feel better.

My SS is about 100-105 and I hit the ball hard. But, the pros must really bomb it.

Do we need another one of these types of threads? At some point, aren't these types of threads just as bad as the ones you're knocking?

Yeah, I agree with the OP. It certainly seems as though many exegerriate their driving distances. I played with a guy today who striped one down the middle, at best it was 275, probably more like 265. He's like, "Well that one is at very least 290...maybe even 315!"...

I almost started laughing to myself, but figured I might as well not argue with him and just say "Yeah, great ball!..."

But, seriously, he was about 25-30 yards in front of me and I hit it about 235-250 (on a great drive) off the tee on usually.

Man I wish I had a dime for everyone of these distance threads that pop up, I could retire early,,,lol!

Golf is a funny game when it comes to hitting it long. It's not about size or strength(although that helps), it's about proper technique and solid contact! People see a 6'3" guy on the course swinging hard and they automatically think the guy hits it a mile, yet he's got poor technique and poor contact and he's lucky to get it out there consistantly 240 yards. Occasionally he may catch one and get it out there 250-260 and everybody say's wow that must be close to 300,,,lol!

its very possible. Last weekend I took my 3 hybrid 260 yards and thought it was a bit lofty, i checked it with my GPS and double check with a buddies skycaddy. I typically hit it 225-250 so it didn't seem too crazy. Of course once i go up to the driver my slice wont let it go even close to that distance.

You have to keep in mind the fairways those guys play on. The fairways on the courses they play are like the greens on normal courses. That means they get a ton of roll. Also they play different equipment. It's perfectly fitted to their swings so they get the maximum amount of distance and accuracy from the clubs they play. Most pros don't hit it further than a single digit handicapper, but they are always right down the middle. Keep in mind that most of the pros also only swing at 80%.

Rocco carries it like 240 and then gets 40 yards of roll = 280 yards.

Golf is a game in which the ball always lies poorly and the player always lies well.
