I just wondered if anyone else found par 3 easy to hit with there irons than if they were the same distance away from the hole on a fairway. Persoanlly I find it much easier and i was wondering if you think its a mental thing or just because u get to hit your ball from a perfect lie and position on a ar 3

I do because the ball is teed up.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

IMHO, its a mental thing. I mean think about it. Most of use hit of a tee even on a par 3, yes, the tee maybe level with the ground, nevertheless its still on a tee. You know the distance, you can see the flag, meaning depth perception from a 150 yard tee box is easier mentally then say, standing in a fairway looking at the green, looking for a yardage marker (if you don't have a GPS). I could go on but I feel like I have soapboxed it enough.

Yes, it is much easier for me too. Part of it is that the ball is on a tee, but I believe it is also a mental thing. I can hit a great drive on a par four and I have an absolute piss-poor chance of getting on in two. I guess that's just part of having a high handicap though...

I'm the opposite. I'm a real short hitter (my 4i is maybe 160, still working on creating lag and all that jazz to increase distance) so for the par 3s that are more than 160, generally most of them, I have to use a 3w; with the ones over 200 or that I can't afford to hit short due to water or whatever, I go with my driver...

I agree with the mental thing comment. I can hit from 165 or so off the fairway 85% of the time, but on par 3's it is more like 25% so i'm the opposite. I have tried tees and no tees on the par 3's but I struggle hitting from the tee box. I think if its in your mind that your going to miss it your more likley to do so, but if you think "I make these all the time" they are easier to hit.

If it's an iron distance for me - that is, 165 yards (3-iron) or less, or 155 yards or less if I'm not carrying my 3-iron - then yes, I'm better from a tee. This is to a minimum of 105 yards (9-iron). For some reason, I hit wedges better off the fairway than off a teeing ground, tee or no tee.

Unfortunately for me, there are almost no courses that I play that have more than one par-3 that I can hit an iron into the green on, so it's almost moot for me. The only one I've played where all four par-3s are iron shots for me doesn't take singleton tee times.

I was going to say "If it's a par 3 hole under 155 yards, I have a lot better chance of a par or bogey than I do of a dubya-bogey. No surprises there." But I looked at my stats and I've had relatively the same success with par 4s.

Although those PW par-3s do "feel" easier, the last GIR I made on one of them I wound up 3-putting, and that just grinds at your tender vittles, IYKWIM.

for me, it tends to be the opposite. I've even talked to some low hdcp guys I play with about it. What I've guessed is the issue for me is that when I'm on a level surface, with a perfect lie, I let too many technical swing thoughts get in my head.

On other approach shots, I may be in the rough, on a downhill lie etc - in those cases, it becomes more of an athletic endeavor for me, I just swing to try to make good contact with the back of the ball -

I will say that while on average I end up with better results, the few longer "approach" shots that I have hit REALLY tight this season have been on par 3s.

You and I are treating this opposite. The first time I have a decent lie and an iron or wedge into a green, I begin thinking of the rest of the hole as a par-3. I used to even keep a different part of the scorecard for my total score, relative to par, on the number of "fake par-3s" I find.

I find that i do par/bogey on 3's with more of a tendency of birdies on 4's and 5's...i just don't know why.
