In the end, I vote for score.

Wow, tough question. I've had rounds that I didnt score as well, but I took away a lot of memorable shots. I think it depends on who I'm playing with, and whether it's a fun round or a competitive round. I just have a tendency to ALWAYS turn it into a competitive round, so I guess the lower score. If anything, it makes me feel better that I was able to score well in a round where I wasnt playing as well as I thought I should be. In the long run, that gives me more confidence.

Scoring well - especially in tournaments. At the end of the day, no one really cares to hear about your round, they don't care HOW, they care HOW MANY.

If I hit the ball well, and don't score I feel like I just wasted 4 hours of my time.

To me I would rather play better and have some good shots compared to what I usually do then have a good score. But also depends on what your playing, for money or with friends, practice round, tournament or just by yourself.

I recently had an interesting round on a very difficult course. Three birdies, four pars, three doubles, two triples, the rest bogies. My score was higher than what I usually shoot, but the three birdies have me feeling better than if I scored 81 or 82.

However, I'd take a sub 80 round without any birdies any day.

I'm at a point where I am striking the ball fairly well and consistently but that has not translated to lower scores so I would vote for scoring well.

Wow, I'm surprised I was the first to vote for the latter option. I guess for me I just want the feeling that I'm improving. For example, I played really well my last round but a few holes killed me, but since I played well for the rest of the round I was happy with myself despite what the scorecard said.

i say playing well, because next time you go out on the course you have a certain confidence and you attack the course with assurance. whereas, if you happened to score lower because of your short game/putting, but hit your driver and long irons crappy, you're going to be second guessing yourself on the next round(s).

I play for one or two good holes a round to keep my clubs off of eBay. Lately, I hit my irons really well, but can't putt to save my life, and I'm fighting a mighty nasty slice on my driver! My score really suffers there.

For me it depends on the situation. If it is an non-tournament round I'd rather have better quality of play, "giving myself a chance" so to speak. Because you have to create an opportunity first before you can capitalize on it. I think this in the long term will improve ones game.

However, in tournament play one would generally prefer a lower score as it is all that shows in the end.

I played a round last week and shot a 77 (40,37). The 40 felt great, hit the ball well, played a smart front nine. The back nine 37, although better, left a sour taste in my mouth because I wasn't hitting the ball as well but just managed to get out of trouble and was a little lucky, the eagle helped out too.

interesting question. obviously, i like to shoot as low as i can but if i'm striking the ball well and just getting unlucky and wind up with a higher score, i can live with that. at least i know what i'm capable of. if i put up a low score and don't play that well, i feel like i got lucky and don't take too much away from my performance.

Definately playing well. In a tournament I don't mind getting some scores, but if I'm not satisfied with how I played, I won't enjoy it as much. I can shoot a 105 or 90 and be equally satisfied, depending on how I played. The swing is always work in progress, if a part I've struggled with is working, I don't care about scoring.

Playing well and putting up worse numbers, because at this stage i'm all about improving.

Before I started taking lessons and working on my swing more seriously, I was able to put up decent numbers hitting 7-irons or less almost exclusively. Sure I can put up a good score by pretty much 7-ironing it straight down the fairway repeatedly in 150 yard chunks and then let my strengths (short game and putting) take it from there. I could get to most par 3's in one if I hit a good short on a shorter par 3 or more usually get there in 2, could get to most par 4's in 3, and could get to par 5's in 4, and was able to get a bogey a good amount of the time. This gave me a much better score than taking out my driver and slicing it 150 yards into the left rough, then long iron shank , etc.

But i'd rather play well and just put up a less stellar number.

The thing with me is that when I feel I've played well and not shot a good score it's usually because I'm striking the ball well but messing up my short game and putting which irritates me much more than when I scramble well and can't get it off the tee.

I also prefer the nice surprise when you find out that you didn't shoot as bad as you thought over adding up your score and being disappointed because you thought you played better.

Depends for me.

Most of the time, I'd have to say I prefer to score well, especially if it's a club comp or there's some friendly betting involved. There are no pictures on the scorecard, so as long as you get the numbers, who cares how you got there? Somehow a scrambling victory is so much more rewarding!

However, if I'm trying to work out a kink in my swing or practice something, I'd have to say quality of play is more important. Of course, I'd only do this in a very friendly environment - zero competetive element!

Normally quality game will result in good scoring .

However , i enjoy quality game more by doing some great rescue and good ball striking.

There was once i played on a par 5 and i have 180 yards to the pin. However a tree stood between the ball ( 10 feet from the ball ) and the pin adn there is another tree guarding the green. I have to fade it to avoid the 1st tree and carry high enough to avoid the 2nd tree to reach the green in 2 . I did it and landed 10 ft from the pin but i 3 putted for a par.

I am very pleased with the par . My playing pal was amazed by the quality shot that i made.

For me I care primarily about 'how I played', not so much the score. I have had rounds where I scored well, but didn't feel like I played well and while I was happy with score I couldn't help but think how much better I might have scored if my ball striking had been better. These are usually the days I putt and/or chip lights-out. Earlier this year I shot a 81 and was really upset because I only missed 1 fairway and hit 12 greens (probably a record for me), but putted so poorly (I think I had 39 putts) that I couldn't score. That's the last time I putted so poorly, but unfortunately it's also the last time I hit the ball so consistently well.
