3-Wood off a tee

I'm just wondering how far you all hit your 3-wood off a tee and what degree it is? Also, how often do you use it to tee and what situations?

I've been using mine a lot lately because I tend to be fairly accurate with it and I am crushing it. I've been getting around 260-270, depending on roll. If I push it (my miss) and get a little fade or slice on it, it goes down quite a bit to about 210-220. I use a 15* Cleveland Launcher with a stiff shaft.

I have also been using a 3 wood off the tee because I have no control with a driver yet. I have a Cleveland HiBore XLS 15* with a stiff shaft. I average somewhere around 220-230, but I can get it to 240-250 if I really crack it. Personally, I think this is plenty of distance right now and I'm in no rush to get my driver swing down, although it will be nice to add some distance when I do.

Does a 1 wood exist, not being a driver? Everyone use the 3-wood when the driver is off, the distance loss is minor. How far and straight would we be able to hit a 9-10º wood with the smaller head on a wood, not the large ones on a driver?

Yeah, I'll pop out a driver on wide par 5's and wider par 4's, but having some success with the 3-wood and out "driving" a lot of people I play with. And I notice my cousin, who can smash his drive, is usually only 15-20 yards further than me. So I figure I'm getting enough distance out of it with confidence and thus accuracy.

A 1-Wood is a driver. A 9* wood that is smaller in the head is an old school driver. I have an old, inherited one from the early 90's. It's smaller than my 3-wood I think.

I've only had my HiBore XLS 3-wood (15* R Flex) for about a week, and hadn't tried hitting off the tees because I was busy with its difficult driver brother. So about an hour or so ago, I'm hitting at the range, and I'm driving off the mats with the rubber tees because that's the only place that's lighted...

I thought I was just screwing around teeing up the 3-wood 2 inches off the ground like it was a driver, but that club didn't hit anywhere but straight! That's more than I can say for my bastard driver which sprays shots around pretty randomly.

The 3-wood for me was consistent at probably 175 - 200, which makes it my longest club with any consistency. At the moment, the 3-wood is the only club I'd hit off the tees on a par 5.

Around 220-230 with no wind or any slopes. Mine is also a 15º. Tried the 13º but not enough carry and too much roll for me, probably would work nicely on those links courses.

Ill hit my 3wood around 240-250 off of the tee. Its a 13.5 degree. Ill use it by default on just about any par 4 under 380 yards.

I have a 5 wood that I hit farther than any 3 wood I have hit. It is 18 degrees. I can fly it about 220. With some roll I can get it out to 230-235.

i hit my 15* about 195-205, i use it when my driver is off (so almost all the time :)). It tends to be quite straight as i automatically feel as though im playing for position whenever i get it out, whereas with my driver i cant help but try to smash the cover off it which is why i spry it around! any par 4 from 350 in i use it as it will give me a chance of a birdie rather than getting in trouble off the tee!

I use mine quite a bit. I use it on tight holes, or holes with deep rough. And I basically use it anytime I can get it around 130-150 off the tee. A driver usually puts me into an "in-between" area if I use it on these holes. I usually get it around 240-250 I would say...I am usually a little farther than my buddies' drives and that is another reason I use it. I am working on my consistency with my driver, so if I ever get it close to the same consistency,then I will start using it more. Right now, I just don't see a need for it unless I am trying to get to a par 5 in 2.

Oh and mine is 15*

I hit my 15 degree 3 wood 210 yards (+/- 10 yards) and use it on shorter par 4's, any par 4/5 with a narrow fairway or hazard to avoid, and par 5's that I have no chance in reaching in two (I rarely can reach a par 5 in 2). It is much more accurate than my driver and I can shape shots. My driver goes around 230 but the extra 20 yards isn't usually worth the loss in accuracy. I've shot my lowest scores when I use the driver sparingly (ie only on long par 4's with wide open fairways). I think most of us would score better if we didn't automatically pull out driver on every par 4 and par 5.

I hit mine about 260. I hit my 3-wood (Titleist 980 15*) off the tee on all par 4's as I get a plenty of distance. I hit my driver on par 5's only if I want to try to reach it in two.

Generally, I don't hit my driver at all because I get plenty of distance with my 3-wood.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'm going to much anymore until I get more consistency with it. Obviously, if you play on the longest tees and face a 620yard Par 5, a driver might be handy.

But on Sunday I was on a Par 5 that played 500 yards. The wind was blowing in pretty good and I teed with my 3 wood. Hit well but not perfect and got it out probably around 235-240. Decided to load it up again on the fairway (right edge, pushed it a bit) and nailed it well, getting to about 15 yards out. I'm positive without wind I would have gotten there in 2. Of course, the green had a bunker in front with the pin near it (really the only angle of attack) and instead of playing it safe I decided to try and chip it just past the bunker and have it roll neatly to the hole. I missed my drop zone by a couple feet and the edge of the bunker by a foot and of course it rolled it. Rock hard bunkers and my unpracticed bunker play later, I ended up with a bogey. Of course I felt like an idiot. I just got this 3-wood and never really had one before. Was part of a deal when I bought a Cleveland Launcher driver. But you're right, I think I'm going to stick with the 3 wood until I really feel comfortable with the driver.

I use it when there is trouble at my drivers yardage, or if its a short par4 where the driver is just to much. I can hit draws, better with my 3 wood than I can my driver so thats usually what i hit on dog leg lefts.

There are 2 holes that I play often, that cause problems for my driver. Sure I could drive the green on both of them, but they all have water so a shorter club and a nice 60* flop shot works better than dropping a ball after hitting a hazard.

But I dont have much of a yardage gap between my 3-wood/3 iron, my 3 wood runs out about 230-240, my 3 iron usually 200-220 and my driver 260-280 with a couple lucky 300 yard drivers.

about 230-260 with my 3 wood. I typically hit it off the deck or with the tee just a hair off the ground.
