Worst rounds in PGA history?

All of the talk about John Daly and his "lack of focus" on the golf course this past week got me wondering if he was in a league of his own with the epic 88! I have been doing a little research and it seems that the PGA doesn't keep the stat of the worst rounds in history...or at least I can't find it. I have found the one worst round, but I am looking for more of a list to see exactly how bad this round was. Would anyone happen to know the worst rounds? I have found quite a bit of info on the worst single hole scores (in which John Daly has a spot on the top of that list) but can't find what I am looking for.

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

Seems like a couple years ago (or so) at a US Open when they had the course just set up brutal (maybe Bethpage the previous time?) there were a couple low 90's?

Maybe I just completely made that up? I thought there was though.

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

From what I read it looks like 89 was the highest but I could be wrong. I can't find a "list" anywhere.

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

I wonder about Mark James' 111 on the European tour in the 1978 Italian Open. That must be the pro record for all tours.

I'm sure unknowns have done worse, and I know Doug Ford shot 94 one year at the Masters back in the 1990s.

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

My first round, when I was in 8th grade, I shot 82 on 9 holes. That score does not include the cheating and what not so I'm guessing it would be higher. By the way, I'm not on the PGA tour.

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

Don't forget to check into the Massacre at Winged Foot in 1974. The leaders there were shooting in the 80's so there had to be some big numbers in that US Open.

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

Ralph Johnston shot an 89 in 1972

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

In 2007, some dude named Sam Walker shot 89 at Oakmont...according to:

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

I am fairly sure Ian Baker Finch tossed up a couple of rounds in the 90's.

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

I think Billy Casper failed to break 100 one year in the Masters.

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

Not sure we should count any of the "retired" pros at Augusta -- the old honorary starters. I think Casper's high score might have been like that, maybe Ford's.

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

I can't remember his name, but last year some guy was up to a 94 after 17 holes and play was called for rain. He didn't return to finish, but even if he had parred the last he would have shot 98. He had a 13 on the first hole that day (supposedly hit 4 straight drives OB). This was on the PGA tour. Anyone remember who it was?

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

I remember Tiger shot an 81 in the British around 2002 and scoring was high so someone must have been in the 90's

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

Rod Pampling shot 71 during the opening round at Carnoustie in 1999 to lead the field, but shot an 86 the next day to miss the cut by a large margin.

Wow tiger shot an 81? Were the people that are calling for John Daly to be suspended for an 88 here doing the same thing to him? I think the worlds best golf pheonom in history shooting an 81 is more shocking than a fully blown addict already past his prime shooting an 88!

No, because we're not stupid. We realize:

1) Tiger had bad weather
2) The course was setup for a major difficulty (not a -20 winning score)
3) 7 shots is a ton on the PGA Tour over four rounds, let alone one
4) Tiger never mailed it in during his 81

Re: Worst rounds in PGA history?

Ok, well thats really bad, 81. I think if Tiger broke 80 he gave up somewhere, mailed it in on some level.
