I am thinking about getting an iPod for the range (and since my wife has talked me into training for a half marathon) and I was wondering what you guys use? I have had mp3 players in the past and routed the ear phones every which way I could see possible but they still always seemed to be in my way.

What do you guys use and how do you use it?

I have an old IPOD 30gig classic. It holds over 3000 songs, so I would say that's plenty of storage for anyone. I don't think I could wear it at the range though, the earbuds would bug me, and I like to hear my shots.

Never have and never will listen to music while playing golf or hitting the range, but I've got a number of players, currently using a Cowon D2 with Shure SE530 plugs.

Just a heads up, if you are looking for an Ipod, look at the Apple refurb store. You can get one for about 1/3 less than a retail one (free shipping too.)

I know some people may not feel good about a refurb, but (imho) most refurbs are units that were returned because they weren't working out of the box for some reason. A bench tech has gone over the unit fixing anything that is wrong, so you know everything is working. On a new unit, the first time the thing has ever been powered on is when you did it after you bought it. You are betting everything went correctly on the assembly line. Anyway, I've have good luck purchasing refubed ipods (having purchased several for family members and myself.)

As far as using when golfing:

I clip it onto my back pocket and let the chord run up my back. Keeps the chord out of the way.

I use my ipod to run with an armband and run the earbuds over my back and they really don't get into the way. Also, I bought an iHome unit for like $40 that I sit in the cart when playing. I like having a lil music when I play alone.

At the range I usually don't have my shirt tucked in, so i run the wire under my shirt and out my collar. And I just have the regular apple earbuds.

I bring mine to the range, but just for the "Tour Tempo" tones. It REALLY helps. I don't know if I could listen to music and swing though. That would mess me up I think.

I imagine subconciously your tempo would be the tempo of the song your listening too, and make it quite hard to groove a swing when tempo is different every 4 to 5 minutes.

I do the same thing. I'll either listen to sports radio or my music. I keep the volume pretty low so it's almost more white noise than anything. Otherwise, the silence drives me crazy.

Never tried it.

I have an Ipod Classic 120gb....in it's case it's just too substantial to wear and swing.

I did take it out with me on a recent practice round. I knew play would be slow. I had a movie on that I watched bits and pieces of between shots. It sure helped kill the frustration that can develop when waiting.

You can get the older version of the Shuffles for minimal $$$ and they clip on anywhere....very light.

I don't practice much, so I don't use the earphones, but when I play I have some speakers I hook the ipod up to. I don't play it too loud so I don't bug the other guys. When we have the right group, I play it pretty loud with some good old rock and roll.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

I always have my tunes on when I practice, and I practice a few times a week. I keep my iPhone in my back pocket and run the headphones under my shirt through the back and the wear them backwards. This way they are 100% out of the way.

I am lucky to have a great short game practice area and never really hit shots at the range. I can hit up to 140 yard shots in this short game area so I relly on my feel more than the sound. Listening to tunes actually helps keep me focused and when I am on the course and hear little sounds here and there I never get distracted anymore. Also, if I am having a bad day on the course, I can think of a good song I usually have in a play list and it helps to put me in a more relaxed frame of mind and hit easy shots.

Listening to music while I play is one of the best things I have done for my game in the past year and the results are clear as I have gone from a 12 to a 7 this summer.

The tour tempo is something I was considering.
