I've been playing the same Callaway Warbird Plus ball for 54 holes. The same ball. One ball.

And I'm 5 under par in those 54 holes.

Is it possible that I don't need to spend $45 for a dozen ProV1s?

Is the Warbird the ball for me?

Do I tee this thing up when league starts?

I went through this about 3 years ago and was playnig the Nike Power Distance Soft having switched from Pro V1's and didn't notice a change in scoring. What I did find was that I didn't like the cover because it frayed quite a bit. I have since gone back to the Pro V1x and probably only go through 2 dozen balls in a season.

Could be random, could be the ball fits you better. The ProV1 is a good ball, but it's not for everyone. Some people need less spin. I play a HX-Hot or Warbird quite often, as they are good balls, and I can get them dirt cheap. They stop nearly as well as a ProV1, and they fly straighter. I only play the ProV1 because I like to curve the ball. I've had problems using a low spin ball out of trouble, where I couldn't bend it enough. As for stopping it on the green, I hit the ball very high, and it lands very soft, so even a Top Flite will stop for me.

A super spinney ball is dam near impossible to control on soft / slow greens (and being from the Midwest I'm sure you are playing soft and slow greens). I think it boils down to you playing the ball that is ideal for your current playing conditions. I'll bet that once the greens firm up your results will differ and you will go back to a softer urethane covered ball.

That is very very interesting. I would tend to say play with whatever works. Maybe your swing is freed up a little because you're not worried about throwing $4 out the window every time you lose a ProV1. I honestly wouldn't even worry about the "why" though, I would just play that type of ball as long as you feel comfortable with it, or until you find a situation under which it doesn't perform the way you need it to anymore.

Really very interesting though.

I say if it is meeitng your needs for example (around the greens. distance and control)...then keep playing it.

I went through a ball demo for about a year (year before last) and I even played the Callaway Diablo as I start out with a ball because I like the way it feels off the putter first...then I go and try chipping with the ball and if I like the way it feels and works then I would put it in play...I liked the Diablo alot once I got around or near the green but I was loosing distance off the tee and with my irons. I think the ball was too soft for me. Anyway through all the balls I tried I kept coming back to the Pro V1 to meet all my needs unitl the Srixon Z Star came out...in my game it plays exactly like a Pro V1 but cost less so like the ad says "I made the switch" ...

hmmm....
a lot of interesting posts

54 holes is a tonne of holes for a ball..hows odes it look?
im usually only good up to 36 or so and its so trashed (from wedges) that i need to switch out

I have 2 brand new boxes of Pro V1's ready for the year and some Nike ONE Platinum's as well
once they are gone....ill go back to "finding" the right ball again....I hate choosing balls

I've never noticed much of a difference between balls. I am a bogey golfer but the truth is I can play as well with a cheapo ball as I can with a premium. As to spin I've spun back the cheap ones and watched the premiums shoot off the back side of the green.

What is it that they say about golf ... it's 90% mental and 10% physical. You can have the most advanced equipment in the world sitting in front of you before you swing a club. However, if you are standing over a shot with inadequate confidence, your probability of success is slim to none. It's sounds so ridiculous, but I pick up an iron or wood at a pro shop/driving range and if it doesn't *look* right to me at address, I don't even want to try it. That may be a little extreme, but the point is the same. You need to be comfortable with your equipment in order to be successful. You are obviously very confident in your ball selection ... why change if you feel good about it and the results follow?

hmmm....

Here it is...

I have three dozen One Platinums and two dozen ProV1 - waiting for the season. I think using a less spinny ball is giving me far more leeway on shots that are not perfect. My usual miss is a pretty exaggerated draw (hook) - my misses with the Warbird are not nearly as pronounced. I'm going to play it again today. I don't think I've ever had a ball last 72 holes.

yep, I would have retired that ball by now

hmm..u you use the same balls as me...cool you know, I noticed w the Bridgestone B330RX's, that when i missed, it was far less exaggerated, than w the Pro V's or Nikes...similar to the Callaways you are using they just didnt have enough spin around the greens for me, and felt harder I just love the way the Pro V feels off the wedges and putter face

Awesome. I've been alternating between Warbirds I got for $20/2 dozen (IIRC) on sale last year and some Pinnacle logo overruns. I like the Warbird better for putting, but otherwise I don't know that I ever notice the difference. The Pinnacles are nice because I dug through the bin at Golfsmith to find a couple dozen with the same eagle logo on them, so I don't have to bother with the sharpie to mark them. But I'm running out of those (I tend to start each round with an unused ball).

That's based on the quality of the strike. If you aren't hitting the center of the club face, you aren't going to get the spin. When you do hit it, you get the spin. I can take a very slow, soft swing, and make the ball rip backwards, just based on the purity of the strike. Miss it, and you won't get that spin.

I found the opposite about the B330 series. The Tour B330 was the best, but it felt no better than a Top Flite, hard and with a stiff cover. The B300S was good, but felt gummy and lifeless. The B330RX also felt gummy, and it tended to feel like a rock wrapped in tissue paper. The Titleists, Callaways, and Srixons never felt this way, they were plenty hard, but the cover felt active, and grabbed the face much better.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. How is the spin on chips and pitches?

I am not sure where you live in the midwest but perhaps you like it because it is cold. When it warms up it may not perform the same.

Aye, not good. That's the problem. And putting isn't much better. The HX-Hot putts really well though, and is a great compromise.
