Keeping the clubs in the trunk all the time? Bad Idea?

Well, during my last round the head came off of my recently (3 months ago) reshafted 60 degree wedge. I called the guy that reshafted it for me and told him what happened, and he said it was because I kept my clubs in my trunk all the time, and the heat gets to them........ I practice 3 times a week and play 2-3 times a week, so keeping them in my car makes sense to me. I'm always ready to hit the range during lunch, or play a quick round after work.

I find it hard to believe that in the 70-80 degree heat, the glue used to hold the heads on can become that affected. I can see it affecting the grips or soft parts, but shouldn't the glue be able to withstand a few days a week sitting in 80 degree heat? My 60 hasn't even been in the car much, like the rest of my clubs either, since I rarely put it in the bag.

Is it my fault, faulty work or just bad luck?

I leave my clubs in the car....never take them out and Im in Fl. When I get in the car the temp gauge says 100+ sometimes and Ive never had an issue with clubs coming loose. Sounds like your club guy is looking for an excuse.

I never leave them in the car for more than a few minutes...like if I'm shopping on the way home from the course.

I had a driver head come off due to that heat.

kpaulhus: That was my thoughts as well, but I just wanted to check with people who have more experience than I do.

I've never had a problem before, and this just happens to be a custom club that he made me so that I could learn to hit a 60. I live 45 minutes from work, and like to play near work a couple times a week and take lessons during lunch, so they have to be in the car more than a few minutes no matter what.

I work 30 minutes from home and play 2 minutes from work, so I routinely leave mine in the blazing hot truck 8-9 hours a day 2-3 days a week during the summer in Texas when it's 100+ degrees outside most days and well over that in the truck. I've never had any problems with heads coming off. I've got stock clubs and re-shafted clubs and still never had a problem like that. I think it was more likely a sub-par re-shafting job. Just my opinion... Maybe he didn't rough up the shaft or use enough epoxy or let it set long enough. Is the shaft steel or graphite?

I only take them out of the trunk in the winter. In the summer it is just too convenient to keep them in the trunk, so I bite the bullet and just leave them there. Never had a problem, though the trunk can get well over 100 degrees on hot summer days.

If it's a steel shaft, you have to rough it up some for the epoxy to bond well. He may not have done that. Even if heat does hurt the bond, it hasn't been hot enough anywhere in the US in March and early April to do anything like that. If this was August, I might be more willing to blame it on the heat, even though I've never had a problem like that, like I said earlier.

I've never heard of epoxy loosing because of leaving them in the car but I guess it would be plausible. I have heard from several people that if it's hot during the day and chilly at night for a couple days it can weaken the flex in steel shafts.

i play on a golf team for my high school and everyone leaves there clubs in the upperclassmen's cars for the entire golf season (august-november). A lot of the kids on the team have had their clubs reshafted and no one has had a problem.

I finally took the clubs out of the car for the first time since I started playing five years ago. Have had reshafted clubs steel and graphite, with no problem. Until tomorrow because I most likely just jinxed myself. Oh well, excuse for a new toy if it happens.

I guess I take mine out mainly to A: prevent them from being stolen out of my car :P, B: it causing my grips to dry out since it gets really hot/dry in the summer in a car. I dunno, I guess if I invested this much in them, might as well take care of them lol. Someone on that Fore inventors only shot created something to keep your clubs from rattling against each other in your trunk, that might be what was causing your shafts to come loose?

I don't believe it was the reason your head came off, but I would not advice keeping them in the trunk all the time. Moisture is trapped and the entire bag is subject to temperature variations. I always keep my golf bag indoors at room temperature. Doesn't take all that much space when standing up, and it's nice to get it inside for thorough cleaning.

Store them indoors at all times! I live in wisconsin and wouldn't DARE leave them outside on a cold winter night ... i'd let it slide on a summer night or two but that's about it
