When I tend the flagstick after a request from my playing partner, I stand on whichever side so that my shadow doesn't interfere with his/her line or the cup.

However, I have one friend that always wants me to stand on the high side of the hole, no matter what direction my shadow goes. I understand that he doesn't want my feet along his potential second putt from the low side, so I abide his request. (I don't think he is using my feet as a reference for his initial putt)

Is there a general rule, or do you stand on whatever side the putter wants you to?

there is no rule on were the player may be attending the flag. But if you really want to drive him nuts say, "If i stand on the high side then you must take two stroke penalty for he is using you as a way to aim his line of play."

I remember happened at the british open, the caddie was holding the flagstick casually and it happen to point to a spot were it looked like the player was aiming, two stroke penalty. So just tell him that on time and see what he says, ;b

Since you're acting as the player's agent when you tend, I'd be inclined to stand where he asked. If you stayed low and then somehow did get hit by the putt, you'd feel pretty stupid and your friend would be pretty upset, I imagine. As long as the request is just "stand on that side", I don't think there's any potential rules problem.

But yeah, you can't stand as an aim point. And even if you don't stand in a particular spot to act as a target (which would be an immediate penalty for touching the putting surface to indicate the line of play), if you happen to stand in a useful spot and point it out, you have to move before the putt. I'm a bit skeptical that merely "looking like" the player was aiming at a casually indicated spot would be enough to trigger the penalty, though. That seems like the sort of rule where normally the player is expected to truthfully answer whether he did or did not aim at the spot.

Yea, but i would just mess with the guy. Especially if he gets real pissed off about you wantting to stand on the low side. I don't see much issue, by the time the ball is halfway to the hole, i am usually out of there anyway. Why even take a chance of having the ball hit you.

Great, so you had to bring this on the forum.....did you call your momma so you could get permission first????.....next time, just do what I tell you too, geesh....you know I like to keep my pimp hand strong, you don't want none of this....

All jokes aside, like you, I usually try to avoid casing a shadow, while also not standing in their line, while also not standing in the lines of anyone else on the green....surprised they always put you on the high side.....in a friendly match, I'll stand wherever they want, but some of the posters make really good points about a possible penalty....never thought of that...

My brother, bless his soul now departed, was very particular about how the flag was tended. Yes, shadows of course. But also, if the wind was blowing the flag, he would look at me with a pointed stare and say, "John....the flag....". And I dutifully grasped the flag with the stick to prevent the flapping. We didn't play together often, but it was a treat when we did.

Funny I prefer people to stand on the low side. Of course shadows are also a consideration.

How I was taught in caddie school many years ago:

You gather up the bunting so it doesn't flap to distract the player; you loosen the flagstick in the hole; you stand as far as possible to the side, making sure that you aren't on any player's line and so that your shadow does not obscure the hole or the players line of putt. Above or below the hole makes no difference, and shouldn't make any difference to the person putting either unless he is using your position to cheat as hinted at above.

I stand on the low side. I always remove the flagstick immediately after the ball is struck and walk/back away.

I stand on whichever side I find best, depending on the slope of the putt and shadows. I stand as far from the hole as possible, right hand stretched out as far as possible, feet together. If the player requests me to change position, I will do so. This topic can hardly be an issue.

Is it possible he can't read which is the high side and therefore is asking you to show it to him? Just playing the devils advocate, but my concern would be rules first if there is a serious round being played.

I bet you get a smile everytime you hear anyone complaining about a flag blowing. great for the daily reminders of lost loved ones, whatever the method!
