Golfing in the rain

It's been awhile since I've golfed in the rain. Usually if its raining, I'll take a day off but yesterday, I golfed in steady rain the entire round. Jacket soaked...greens soaked...puddles on fairway...but the worst part, the greens were not draining at all. Pools of water gathered on the greens causing for ridiculously inconsistent putting.

Depending on your putting stroke, you ball would either skid across the water and zoom right past the hole or the ball would catch on water and go maybe 2 ft.

Needless to say, it was a bad round for me.

Any golfers out there who golf often in the rain?

I haven't golfed in the rain much this year....we haven't had any!! But I usually don't mind golfing in the rain. To me, there is something calming about hearing the rain drops hitting my rain gear.

I actually enjoyed it for the most part. I got a cart because of the rain so we played at a slow pace and enjoyed the course. THe course is in a heavily wooded area so it was very soothing.

Hasn't rained around here in the Pacific Northwest in awhile and when I actually went, it was partly cloudly and no rain. It was literally after the first tee, it started just pouring for a good 30 minuets then steady rain for the next 4 hours.

Yeah, the greens can get bad. I don't guess I have ever played in a steady enough rain for them to get that bad....maybe the greens at our local course just drain well. But that would drive me nuts as well!

I remember once in my youth, they wouldn't let me on the course because the greens were frozen!

In my old age however, I am strictly a fair weather golfer. I will play in the heat if I have plenty of Gatoraide, but not in the rain.

I will make the rare exception for a scheduled event or something, but not for a casual round.

I think they actually ended up closing the course later in the afternoon. The pin cup things were completely flooded with water all the to the top. the bunkers were flooded so it was difficult to hit out of, big muddy puddles on the fairway and idiots on carts who drove right onto the fairway and tore the fairway up. Should be common sense that if the fairways are wet and muiddy, you shouldn't be driving your cart out there but plenty of people did it and did some damage.

The most fun I had golfing last year was when two of us (the other 2 backed out) played in a steady rain one Saturday morning. The normally crowded course was so empty, they let us play the 2 nines of our choice on the two 18 hole layouts, something that is normally not allowed. We went around in under three hours in total solitude with nothing but the rain and woods around us. It was awesome.

My Tools of Ignorance:

Driver: Ping I20 9.5*
Woods/Hybrids: Cobra AMP 3W and 3 HY

Irons: Cobra AMP 4-GW

Wedges: Callaway Forged Copper 56* and 60*

Putters: Scotty Cameron  35" (Several of the flow neck blade variety)

I love playing in the rain. I have a big umbrella for the push cart and good quality raingear, so no reason not to.

I remember once in my youth, they wouldn't let me on the course because the greens were frozen!

Frost delays happen quite often in the winter, even here in California.

I'll play through a constant drizzle or on and off rains, but I don't think I would be caught out there during some heavy stuff... much more enjoyable things in life than golf in a monsoon..

I hadn't golfed in the rain in quite some time, but I decided to a few weeks ago. Surprisingly there weren't a lot of puddles on the greens, but they were terribly slow and the fairways were basically one big lake of casual water. And if you missed the fairway there was no way to hack it out on the green. I actually played pretty well that day, and I really had my swing going. I shot +2 on the front and then -1 on the back with 3 birdies. Yeah I actually played fairly well as far as my woods and irons go. I was mostly in the fairway and decent GIR for the most part...

There was one massive blowup hole that i triple bogeyed on. 9th hole, drive hooked right into the woods. When I got there, the ball was sitting right behind a tree so I had to chip out. Hit a 3 wood from good lie and thought it was a good shot but when I got to the green, the ball was in the bunker in like a inch of water. First bunker shot went no where...second shot punched it out way past the green. Chipped and 2 putted for triple... should've been a rather simple straight forward 380y par 4 too.

hole of the round for me was a par 5 that I birdied. dogleg right, faded a 3 wood off the tee perfectly right in middle of fairway. 250 yards to go, hit a 3 wood again perfect right on the green, then 2 putted for birdie. My partner on the other hand, took a drive and drove it straight without fade into the woods

I don't mind getting wet, or the course conditions. I just hate when my grip gets slippery.
Can't hit a decent shot, when the grip feels slippery.

It rains pretty steadily here from November until May so I will definitely play in the rain. If it's not pouring, I'll give it a go. It kind of sucks, though . .especially when the course gets muddy. Our local course has so much standing water on it during the winter that some people call it "Lake Muni". When I start losing every ball I hit because it's either plugged in the fairway mud, sitting under 6-12 inches of casual water or lost in some rough that hasn't been mowed for over a month . . then the clubs get put away until the course gets a chance to dry out. Sadly, this year that was just in time for July 4th!

I carry a hankerchief cut in half to place between my hand and the grip. You dont even know its there, and it gives me the same feel as a dry grip.

thats a good idea. i ended up having to switch out my gloves 3 times because they were completely soaked. Also doesn't help that my one and only towel i brought ended up getting soaked as well so wiping down the grips didn't help at all.

Buy rain gloves. They work well.
