So I recently just purchased some Golf Pride New Decade Multi-Compound grips and was wondering if I could regrip them by myself or if I should just pay the money to have someone do it for me. Thanks in advance for the help.

What sort of resources do you have available to you? It's tough for me, because I live in an apartment and haven't a garage or even a large balcony. Incidentally, it's also hard for me to clean my grips at home (and I'm not sure I do it right when I do so at a course).

It depends on how fussy you are about your grips. Removal of grips can be a problem for a newbie. The hooked blade on a handiknife works the best. if you are a slob you leave the old tape on and tape over it. If you are fussy then you remove the old tape. be careful if scraping graphite shafts so as to not harm the shaft. measure your tape strips so they are all the same length. attach double sided tape to your shafts. wet the inside of the grip with grip solvent by putting thumb over openings and tumble back and forth, use the solvent in the grip to activate the tape on the shaft. slide the grip on and align while the solvent is allowing manipulation. pull down on the grip to make sure the grip is on. tap butt on the floor to seat the butt in the grip cap. measure somehow the diameter of the grip to make sure that they are all consistent in diameter. wait a day and try your new grips

Sounds easy enought. I only have 13 clubs and got 13 grips but am leaving the putter alone so im only regripping 12 clubs. I think I might one club and then if its not as easy as it sounds ill take it in to have it regripped. Its only 24 bucks to regrip a set.

i regrip my own clubs all the time, its something i enjoy doing really. so if its something that you wanna do yourself go for it, i like your idea about only trying one at first. but on the other hand its also really easy to have it done buy a club tech, ive seen guys change a whole set in half an hour........

Keep it where the mowers go!

The only reason I wanna do it is I like to learn new things and since Im still young(22) this could save me a lot of money over the years if I dont have to pay someone else every year.

Do it alot now(whenever I replace a club), got a few tools to make it easy like a tape scraper, a thing that opens the tip of the grip so you can slide it on easier, and used an old clamp with a shaft holder. I like the strips instead of the tape, and use minerial spirit found at walmart.

its the easiest thing in the world. All you need is some grip solvent and the grip tape, cut the old one off, take the old tape off (warm hair dryer works to loosen tape), put new tape on, squirt the solvent over the tape thats on the shaft and squirt some solvent on the inside of the grip, then just slide it on and align it, let it dry for a few hours.

If you are handy and can change your brakes on your car then you can change the grip on your clubs. Two things to be careful about is that you are usually working with either lighter fluid or some type of solvent that may cause a fire, so be very careful especially near an open flame, including your garage area with water heater and gravity heater that have pilot lights, make sure you don't burn yourself or burn your house down. The next thing to be careful about is while taking the old grip off you will be handling a knife or some sharp object, becareful not to cut your fingers off or stab yourself.

Other then that its simple. when in doubt pay someone to do it for you.

Go to a clubmaker in your area and ask him/her if you could watch while they install a grip. Its is silly easy to do, although a bit cumbersome on the first couple of tries.

It's not hard at all, I use a hook blade on a Stanley knife and cut them, then just peel off the old grip. If you are lucky the old tape will go with it, if not you have to pull the tape. I will do this while I sit and watch college football on any given Saturday in October. Putting them on is a little more work but you can get the solvent and tape at any local store.

On the other hand, several of the local stores in my area have advertised that they will put grips on for $1 a grip, so spending $13, and very little of your time might be worth it.

its pretty darn easy, I've even had to change a grip in a hotel room once without a vise and my handy little blade (bought a last secon replacement hybrid at a 2nd hand shop). I did it with a pocket knife and my muscles. It helped that the grip tape was water and soap activated of course. Worked like a charm

Wish I could find a place that would do it for a buck. Most of the pro shops I have called are either charging 2 bucks to 3 bucks. still not a ton of money but i if i play for ten years and change grips once a year thats 240 bucks i coulda saved. Hopefully ill play longer then 10 years too

OK, I've never done my grips, so I may be wrong on this. I haven't seen it mentioned yet. Don't you want to make sure the line on the bottom of the grip is noted? So that way you can rematch the center line of the grip back up?

Just checking.

I will say thought that after reading this, I think I'm going to replace my own grips.

I replaced my first 2 sets of grips last year, both graphite shafts, and I thought of the same thing. What I did was as I securing the shaft in the vice I used a laser line level to align those index(?) marks and then made a mark on the shaft for realignment of the new grip. Probably a little anal on my part but, I wanted to get it right.

The first set of shafts I found were a bit tough getting the old tape off but, about half way through I began using a heat gun (carefully) on the old tape and they peeled off very easily. The second set of shafts I did went very quickly once I figured things out and gained the confidence.

    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
