Does anyone else feel as tho they play better or worse depending on who they are playing with? I play with a buddy from highschool who is like a 7 hcp and I then have a buddy who just started playing like 4 months ago. I always find that when I play with my buddy whos a 7 that I am always striking the ball better and that I always score better. But when I play with any of my friends who are similar hcps or worse that I blow up alot more hole and that I score way worse.

It just got me thinking is this just me or is it like a common thing amongst ppl.

It's common. Happens on the tour as well. You feed off the energy from your playing partners. That doesn't mean you can't shoot well with your friend that just started.

I believe it is normal to play better when playing with players that are better than you. I know I do. Not sure why but seems to be the case with most golfers. Conversely I don't score as well when playing with gofers who are not playing well or significantly higher handicaps.

I wish I could play to the level of my playing partners since they are all alot better than me ;). I do believe they suffer playing with me, as they typically shoot worse when I'm there than they tell me their scores are from rounds they play without me

I have a coworker who just broke 70 for the first time this year. He now refuses to play with anyone that can't shoot low 80s or better. He said someone he met on the course recently told him that it will help him if he plays with people that play at or around his level. He did it during that round where he broke 70, and that was enough for him to become a believer!

I think it helps me as well. If your not worrying about your buddy who is spending 5 minutes in the woods looking for his errant tee shot, or all the people who are starring at your buddy who keeps wiffing off the tee, you can concentrate more on your game and in general just be more comfortable out on the course. Doesn't mean I'll ever stop playing with my friends who aren't consistent players though.

I seem to have a problem playing really well with my good friends. My best rounds always seem to occur with strangers or people I play with on a very occasional basis. I have 2 really good friends and we're all learning the game together and it always seems like two of us play pretty well and the other is just having a miserable round. We always talk about having one of those rounds where it comes down to the 18th hole to win a round. What's funny is if I play with just one of the other guys, we can have those fun, memorable battles.

There's a guy I work with who has heard from other people how much better my game has gotten and that I could give him a run for his money. I've played with him 3 times now. The first 2 times were last year and I was still trying to find myself - wasn't a big deal. This 3rd time occurred a month ago after me pulling rounds in the 80s and having a great year overall. Well, I played absolutely crap that day - fortunately, he's a good dude who doesn't care but still. It was in my mind LOL

If it's a friend I'm playing with (who's a better golfer than me), it does tend to elevate my game. Nothing miraculous, but definitely noticeable.

If it's a stranger, it makes me nervous and self-conscious, and generally doesn't elevate my game.

I'll definitely agree with that too. And I've even had instances where I'm playing with a stranger who isn't very good, and I still feel pressure to hit good shots and feel self conscious!

Definitely the two things that (for no reason at all) help me play better are playing with better players and dressing like a tour player.

Waiting out the 2 feet of snow that just dropped on the course....

If I don't see it, it didn't happen.

Next time they come to you with their tall tales of low scores without you, the above statement should be the first thing out of your mouth.

Looks like I'm the complete opposite to everyone else - maybe it says something about my character. For some reason, playing with better golfers makes me tense and I don't play as well. But in a group when, in theory at least, I'm the best golfer I seem to play a lot better. It's almost like I feed off their reactions to my shots - the not-so-good golfers appreciate my shots more (even though in reality my play is mediocre compared to genuinely good players). I find it a real confidence boost. Its not something I'm proud of but it does seem to happen regularly that way.

I agree that it has a big impact. I walked on alot in my life and played with strangers. If they were good, I might be a little nervous at first but would then after I get confortable feed off there good shots and play well generally. Playing with real hacks is hard. When they can't get around the green in regulation then it is hard to get it going and get into the game. All sports have this momentum thing, and golf is no different.

I just started last spring, and I've had the luck to have friends who I regularly play with who are a ~4 handicap and I usually shoot a bit better with them as opposed to my friends who shoot around 100. When I fall apart is when I play with better people I don't know too well, and I over-think and get anxious about everything I do. Definitely a time when I fall apart.

I have to admit that I play best alone because I can let my head be free and not have to worry about waiting or being waited on, or the fact that I might be judged on a poor shot.

I play much better with pressure. I hit the best drives when I'm in a group (random group) or there's traffic behind me. When you're with your buds you really have nothing to prove unless there's skins on the line! Good players always bring out the best because you don't want to look like a wanker out on the course.

I Think you get into a better rythum when you play with people who are on your skill level or better. Mainly cause your not watching the other guys spray the ball everywhere and waste a bunch of time looking for lost golf balls.

I wonder who your friend is? He must be a pretty good golfer lolol. You do always have your better rounds when we play. Sometimes I cant believe the scores you post when your not playing with me, because I've never seen you shoot over 105. I also play better when I play with the 2 and 3 HI guys in my club.

Almost always a better round when I'm playing with people who I perceive to have a better skill set than myself. I focus more than I would with the outside distraction of poor playing partners. The same goes for a lot of things, though. I snowboard all winter, and riding with people who can't keep up won't help you get better. You gotta push to get to the next level.

    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
    • I would guess putting grooves in it might make it non-conforming. I am not sure how stringent the USGA is on restoring golf clubs.
    • If PT doesn't work, then all other options (shots) are just temporary bandages of the pain. You may do more damage. Pain is the bodies way of telling you to STOP. Once you get rid of that, you are just now using an already damaged body part and put more stress and strain on it.
