Hakeem "the dream" Olajuwon
They just don't make centers like him anymore. Most centers can't even play a full season without suffering some kind of injury. To name a couple are Greg Oden and Andrew Bynum. Hakeem was the best center that I ever watched and would dominate any center in the game right now.

Of the centers who have played in the modern style none of them has his quicknes and footwork, he just dominated Shaq when both were near their prime. I am not one who believes you can compare centers from different eras, but I belive he was the best all around center of his time.

I agree with allin that it's pointless to compare centers (or really any athletes) from different eras, but all time points scored leader speaks for itself. He might not be the best ever, but he's certainly up there.

Yeah its hard to compare between different era. Wilt Chamberlain would be the best center just by sheer numbers alone and his domination.

Hakeem and Shaq faced off in different times of their careers. Shaq was young and Hakeem was a seasoned vet. Hakeem was all around dominant: post moves, jumper, passing, and defense. The closest person to Hakeem was KG in this era but just in the PF position.

I would say Duncan is closer to Hakeem in this era than KG.....but Hakeem was a beast. I was an Admiral fan back then and he just ripped him to shreds back in 95, and Mr. Robinson didn't even have a bad series. I guess that's why when big men (Yao, Dwight) want to get to that next level, they go see The Dream.

If you watch Tim Duncan play and Hakeem, it's totally different. Hakeem is much more dynamic. I'm not taking anything away from Tim Duncan since he gets it done but definitely not in the same style.

I'd have liked to see Shaq and Wilt go at it in the paint.

Add in Bill Russell and nobody'll score.

Bill Simmons contends in The Book of Basketball that Hakeem was the most improbable athlete the NBA had ever seen, considering the blueprint of his development as a player:
  • developed outstanding footwork playing soccer at a competitive level from a very early age;
  • grew into a seven-footer's body without losing said agility;
  • quickly adopted to basketball upon discovering the game in his teens;
  • found his way to a Houston University program whose coach had a winning record in developing big men, while easily adjusting to his new surroundings;
  • mentored by Moses Malone during off-season workouts during the peak of the latter's career;
  • continued developing as a professional once drafted by his adopted hometown team;
  • proved to be one of the most competitive personalities in NBA history.

All reasons why there will probably never be another player like Hakeem.

Funny, a friend of mine and I were talking about the 1984 NBA Draft not too long ago. Olajuwon picked first, Jordan-Perkins-Barkley were 3-4-5.

I was a huge fan of Hakeem but dont forget about Ewing. Not saying he was better but he was a very dominant player as well with some great post moves, a good jumper and played tenacious defense. Hakeem had the best post moves I've ever seen though. His soccer background really made his footwork second to none.

I remember when I was so excited to watch almost any NBA game Bulls-Heat, Bulls-Knicks, Heat-Knicks, Rockets-Spurs, Rockets-Suns...list goes on and on. Ahhhh the good old days!

Don't forget about Kareem Abdul Jabbar.   He got skinny body like Olajuwon and deadly Sky Hooks.   He can Sky hook you all night long without really now how to stop him.
