I am looking at a Callaway X Hybrid or a Nike Sumo Hybrid...same price for both clubs.

I am looking for feedback from those of you that have used either...or if have a hybrid you absolutely love, let's hear about it.

I can't hit my 3 - 6 irons, and want to replace them with hybrids...what's your recommedation ??????

I would say that the Adams Hybrids are the best. Just hit a few different ones and make an educated selection.

If you can't hit 4/8 of your irons why not go out and trade in your iron set for a nice hybrid combo set?

The Adams A7OS or Idea Tech V3 would be perfect.

Waiting out the 2 feet of snow that just dropped on the course....

Not a bad idea!! Might not get a lot out of your clubs but then again, you might.

The above is the link to Nickent hybrids on ebay, I have tried many different brands and still find they are my favorite, I like the 3DX and 4DX best. I find them easy to work the ball with. The 5DX I can only hit straight(Which isn't all bad)

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Best hybrid to buy ? How did you narrow down your choice to those 2 candidates ? What is it about them that makes you believe either one of them is going to be the best out of all the hybrids on the market ? I think to truly find the best club for you is going to take either a lot of experimentation with many different clubs or work with a professional fitter who can help you narrow down the choices by matching each clubs attributes to your swing, ability, style ect. Or just pick which ever one gives you the warm fuzzy

When a company makes a club in the USA I will proudly display their brand here. All of mine were made in china by somebody making $2 a day. Shame on you Mr club manufacture.

I currently have an Adams Idea Black Super hybrid, and I love it. But The Nike Sumo's are a nice hybrid, too. I've played the Sumo and Sumo2, and I preferred the Sumo2 simply because it seemed to get the ball up in the air better than the non-square version.

Good point, getting each hybrid individually will cost you more.  But I gotta ask-you're a 16 handicap and you can't hit a 5 or 6 iron?  I think you've got it in you somewhere, and I'd practice some more before giving up on long and mid irons for good.  A well struck long/mid iron is, for me, the absolute best feeling in golf.  I'm not knocking hybrids, I often carry a 20* 3H or a 19.5* 5 wood hybrid.  And I'll admit that most people can't hit a decent 3 iron.

If you definitely want to get a couple hybrids I'd start with replacing only your 3 and 4 iron.  I also recommend the Wilson Staff FYbrid 3H and 4H.  I bougth the 19.5* version last year and it's head and shoulders above any hybrid I've tried (Adams, Nike, Titleist, Callaway, Nicket, PING, etc).  It was so good I ordered the 3H and 4H for my dad and the 4H for my brother.  They're both single digit 'cappers and consistently hit fantastic shots with the FYbrids-my Dad has taken to calling for "Wilson" like he's Tom Hanks in Castaway when he wants the FYbrid 4H.

Anyway, that's my soapbox.  I strongly recommend you stick with your mid irons and wholeheartedly endorse Wilson Staff for your hybrids, can be found on Amazon for about 50% off MSRP.

I'll mention some clubs that no one else has mentioned.  A little background:  I hate hitting a 3 wood off the ground, and never used a 5 wood before.  So I call a professional club maker and fitter.  I give him all my info, age, height, SS, type of normal shot, current clubs, and on and on.  This took about 1-2 weeks of going back and forth.  He made clubhead and shaft recommendations based on all the info I gave him and built a 3 wood for me.......holy sh*t this thing is ssssoooo sweet.  Its so easy to hit off the ground I purchased the same club in a 5 wood and will have him reshaft it with the same shaft he put in the 3 wood, when he returns from the PGA show in FL.   He recommended a 17* 3 wood made by Sonartec with a Grafaloy Fairway shaft in stiff (I normally hit reg flex) and +1" (which ALL my clubs are).  Dang I didn't know a custom build could do what this club does!!!

Sonartec also makes hybrids,  if they hit anything like this 3 and 5 wood, I'd buy them in a heart beat, if I needed another club to cover a specific distance, which I don't at this point.  Though I can't hit my 4 iron like I want to, so a 23/24* Sonartec hybrid may be in my future : )

I hit a Macgregor MHT hybrid 3 today. It hits pretty good. I just don't think I am a hybrid type of player. Not sure why. Anyone play a Macgregor hybrid? Wanted to test the Titleist 909d but for some reason the sales guy took it away before I got to hit it.

I love my Nickent 4DX hybrids.  You should definitely check them out.  You'll probably be glad you saved money compared to Callaway, Adams or TaylorMade.

For anyone considering purchasing one or more hybrids, I'd suggest hitting multiple manufacturers either in the simulator or at a demo day.  Whether it's shaft, weighting, or general "feel" of the club, I suspect you'll find one or two options that you hit better than the rest.

What's in the Bag:
Driver: Taylormade SLDR 12*
3-wood: Taylormade Burner 15*
Hybrid: Taylormade Burner 19*
Irons: Callaway XR

Wedges: Vokey 50*, 54*, 58*
Putter: Scotty Newport Studio

There are a lot of good ones out there. Even some of the older models are fine. I'm still hitting Ping G5 19* & 22* hybrids.

  • 6 months later...

your best bet is getting adams hybrids made to replace those mid-long irons

but if you wanna save some money and embarrass some of the guys playing the expensive brand names, go with the fybrid iron set from Wilson Staff. They also give you three different options in shafts whether you want graphite, steel, or there "half+half" shaft. Which the bottom half is graphite for lightweight inducing clubhead speed while the top end is steel producing consistency and feel. When i decided on my FG tours i gave these a hit for fun. Not my cup of tee at address but they arent only easy to hit, they go longg

+1 for nickent 4dx I bought one for 15 bucks new and never looked back. I didn't have a need for a new hybrid but at the price I figured why not and it's a solid club.
