Perhaps this is more of a question for the high handicappers, but have you ever had a bad score (by your standards), but you felt you played well?

I had that moment today.  For the past 2 weeks, I've been close to breaking 110 consistently.   However, today I played Chambers Bay (hosting 2015 U.S. Open), which is a VERY tough links course (during the amateurs tourney someone hit a 108).  I ended up shooting a 58 on the front nine and a 62 on the back.  Call me crazy, but I felt really good about the round.  Why?

1) I didn't lose a ball.   I usually lose 2-3 balls when I play here.

2) My worse score was a 9.   I'm a noobie, so occasionally I have the dreaded 10-12 score.   Most of my high scores were due to 3 putting.

3) I hit my driver somewhat consistently.  I didn't have one "50 yard dribbler" as I like to say.  I also didn't take any off the tee mulligans, which is probably a first for me.

4)  I made solid contact with most of my hits (just didn't go where I wanted them to go lol).

I played withe a decent golfer (who shot in the low 90s), and he complimented me on my game, considering I'm only a month in.  When they grouped me with him, I could tell he was a little nervous about being with a noobie.   But after the round he was supportive and enthusiastic ("You have potential!"),

So a good day at the course, regardless of the score.

1st that is great you had a good round regardless of your score, progress if you ask me. As a somewhat beginner myself(August, 2010) I always sense that tense moment when I am paired and explain I am new so if you want out feel free you won't offend me. I also will get complimented for having potential considering the limited time playing. My question is and I am by no means knocking you or anyone, but how crappy are normal beginners? I mean I am god awful but make solid contact and have some grasp of the game. Does this mean a lot of  beginners swing and miss take 8 or more strokes per hole? Sorry if this is off topic I just think it is funny when someone says that.

it definetly happens, sometimes you blow your brains out on a couple of holes, sometimes you strike the ball well but put your brains out, sometimes you putt well and nothing will drop.  just keep at it and it will all fall into place someday!!

Yes, bad things can happen.... I was on my way to breaking 100 for the first time last year. I had 89 through 17 holes... And I ended up with a 101 with a 12 on the 18th hole. It sucked!

I change my swing every time I don't shoot par for the course.

I've played most of a round feeling pretty good about it and then been surprised at a poor score, but I've also done the opposite and felt like I played poorly but somehow ended up with a good score.  A time or two I've had to re-add the score more than once to convince myself that it was right.

Not losing a ball would equate to a great round for me.  The guys I play with are significantly better than I am (patient guys too) so it's a given I'm going to have the worst score.  I try to beat my last score, and focus on improving particular areas of my game that are weak.  If I can do either one of those I'm usually happy with the round

It happens more the opposite way for me. I think I'm playing bad but I'm right at my handicap when I add it all up. But yea I do have times when my score is worst then I think. Two years ago i made an eagle from 90 yards on the 1st hole and i was on a high for the rest of the round but I had a few to many bogeys but who gives a shit I holed out from 90. If I hit a shot that does exactly what I want it to do in any round I am really happy no matter what I shoot. The thing I hate the most is when people get mad when playing golf. I never do, You never know when you are going to hit the best shot of your life, It could come after a shank.

i have had the scoring go both ways. shaky off the tee. erratic with the irons and looked at more score after 18 and be surprised to be in the low 90s. when i look back i find that had few if any three putts and 1 or less chip per hole. when my scores baloon it is the 50 yards and in that kill me. too easy to turn a birdie putt into a bogey if you get frustrated.

Yes, and it's usually because my short game is off. I have a tendency to think more about how my ballstriking was, so sometimes I'll feel like I hit the ball well all day but I couldn't make a birdie putt or I couldn't get up and down, and I'll feel like I played well but in fact I didn't score well.

Ive had that moment many times.  All in takes is a few bad holes to destroy what would have been an otherwise good round.

you know your short game and putter is working well when this happens, I have scraped the ball around for an entire round and ended up with a mid to high 70's score, just because I got up and down every hole and when I was on GIR i made a couple of bird's.  Conversely I have hit 12 fairways and 14 GIR and shot low 80's, almost impossible, this is a crazy game
