When should you purchase new wedges? Just when it feels like it looses it's bounce? Any suggestions on what are a good set of wedges without killing my pocket?

Bit the Bullet Purchased a 3h

Went to Dicks Sporting Goods just to buy some balls and walked out with the Adams A7 3h stiff shaft. Paid $99

Went out and hit some balls and played a round with it. Wow!! I understand now why everyone is playing them. The only thing is im missing a little right. Like just a little offline from impact. Nothing a little practice can't fix.

Now to the drivers. Im in desperate need of a driver soon. Now i know everyone is going to say go hit them see which one you like best. What are you playing and why? Whats not going to drain my wallet?

Go to any large golf center with a good return policy and you will see buckets full of returned drivers. Somethings seriously wrong here. So, do like everyone else hit them until you find one that works for you.

This seasons hype is custom weighting for an extra 20 yards.  No mention that the shaft is longer then most pro's play.

My own driver is a Nike Sumo that's a couple of years old.  A lot of negative reviews but it works for me. $65 out of one of those barrels.

Ping G10, the thing is just a plain and simple monster. It hits the ball a little high for me, so i got to be a bit careful, sometimes i hit rain makers. There not bad, 265, but i get zero roll out of them. Thats with a 77 gram shaft, x-stiff, little torque and a kick point to promote a lower ball flight. I am thinking of switching to a lower degree of driver here soon. But Ping does a great job, the new ping drivers got great reviews. I like them because they look great. I am a classic driver guy, can't stand the square shapes or over elongated clubheads.

I recently picked up a used Cleveland 460 Launcher in excellent condition for $60 bucks at my local golf shop.  It replaces a Great Big Bertha.  It has improved my consistency in putting the ball in the fairway and I even get an extra 10 yards or so.

When it comes to drivers I treat them like cars.  New is nice if money is no object, but that is not my situation, so used is great - much cheaper - and besides, the latest and greatest usually isn't.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

As far as when to replace wedges, when your grooves get to the point where they are not good anymore is when I would find new ones or else if I try some that just feel better. I bought new Titleist wedges at the beginning of last season and by the end I really began to like the CG-15's so I will be adding three of those this spring. They just feel better for me.

hitting a 910 d2 and have absolutly nothing bad to say about it. Very nice true flight and looks nicer than some other drivers on the market...(r11 cough cough.) Im tempted to try the r11, but surely wont buy it because i love what i have.

as far as wedges go, im told once you notice the wedges arent spinning as usual...its about time to change them. I use mizuno mp-t11's, the current conforming model. but if you are looking for something cheaper, the mp-t10's are the previous model without the conforming groves, and much cheaper if i remember correctly.

Yes, I tried the 910D2 9.5 loft with S flex (Aldila R.I.P 60g) I tried it yesterday and loved it. I am 115 lbs and 14 yrs old but hit it fairly long for my size. (average 260 yds) I think i only missed 2 fairways yesterday with it.

The MP-t10's are cheaper.  I just got a 52, 56, and 60 on ebay, all for $50-$60 a piece.  In my opinion, their isn't a wedge out there that offers better feel than the mizuno's.  Each wedge has it's own unique characteristics, but the feel of the mizuno's was what attracted me.

I picked up a groove sharpener last year and salvaged my 15+ year old Mizuno Pro wedges. I keep trying to kick them out of the bag, but they're just like old friends now.

Im going to throw the Mizuno JPX-800 in here.  Its a seriously great driver and super easy to hit straight and long.

As for when you should replace wedges: if you notice that your wedge shots arent getting the spin and arent checking up like they normally do, then its probably time for a new wedge.  How long a wedge lasts really depends upon how many bunker shots you hit.

Im playing a Taylormade R9 right now but thats because I won it in a raffle.  If I were in the market for a new driver, Id try out as many as I could and go with what felt best and worked best but I have a feeling that Id end up with a JPX-800.  I demo hit one a few weeks ago and it was crazy how easy it was to hit good shots with it.  It had a little more pop to it than my R9 does and you can be all over the clubface and still get good distance and accuracy with it.  I was getting about 260 yards with it on the simulator, so Id expect 230-250 yards in real life depending upon what the wind is.

Replace your wedges as they wear, but be sure to try a groove tool first.  My vokeys are turning 3 this year.

As far as drivers are concerned, I'm playing an old R7 from 2006.  I love the look and feel of the head and it's the most accurate driver I've ever played.

Dumb question but is the groove tool easy to use? I would hate to screw up my club face worse than it is.

My personal opinion is the approach I take. When I'm looking for new clubs, especially drivers I always look at the previous years models. Not only are they so similar to the new ones in most cases, you can usually pick up a new previous year driver for pretty cheap. I play a Taylormade Superfast. Not much different than the 2.0 and got it for 120.00 brand new after trading in my old driver.

When its breezy swing easy!!!!!

Yea I actually just got rid of my r7 425. I loved it but it was done for. I just feel like on my 60 degree it doesn't have that crisp feel anymore. One thing is I have a high swing speed. With a driver length hurts me, i just feel more comfortable with a shorter length driver. Im not really worriedabot losing distance because i feel like i can put it out there. Also second that on if its easy to re-groove your wedges.

Freshening up wedges is as easy as buying the $20 tool on ebay.  Over time, the edges of your grooves will round and collapse into the groove.  These tools are made of a very hard tool-grade steel and can trim groove wear up nicely.

As far as the driver is concerned, control is all about the shaft.  If you have a 'high swing speed' be sure to find a head you like and a fitter your trust.  The Motore F1-75 that I've fitted to my driver has been a game changer.
