Our course finishes with the 17th being a par-5 and the 18th a par-3 and at the tournament at the weekend in two consecutive groups one player had a 2 on the 17th, and then a guy in the next group had a 1 on the 18th! just got me wondering if you could only have one in your life would you rather have an albatross (double eagle) or a hole in one?

I'll take the hole in one.  Most people I know wouldn't understand the accomplishment of an albatross and I don't have the distance to likely hit one.

Hole in one! Whatever lowers my score the most!

I'd take the best of both worlds with an albatross on a par 4!

If that's not an option, I'd still take the albatross.  Then I can constantly explain to everyone what an albatross is (everyone I know has never heard it called that, only double eagle, and they never believe me when I say it's called an albatross).

I've never made either but I'd definitely take the double eagle. For me, a double eagle most likely means that I holed out with a 3m (in addition to smashing the drive), which is a hell of a lot harder than getting a hole in one on a 130-yard par 3 using a PW. If the par 3 in question was 200 yards, I'd have to think about it.

I'd take a double eagle over an Ace any day.

Double eagle takes 2 spectacular shots in a row where an ace can just be one lucky shot. (in my opinion)

This is right on.  Anybody who says they will take an ace over a double eagle can not understand how hard it is to get a double eagle.  Hardest score to get in golf. BY FAR!

Ummm...that would the the albatross....not the hole in one

Not in my case...if I can get a birdie on the par 5, I'd rather make a hole in one. Just that feeling of an ace would fire me up! But since I've already made a hole in one, I guess at this point I'd rather have the albatross.

Hole-in-one. It just seems to have more prestige about it. Although double eagle is more of an accomplishment and probably requires more skill (I've never heard of the 90-year-old 30-handicapper making a double eagle, but they've made holes-in-one), it would be cool to at least say I've gotten a hole-in-one. Then again, I just got two holes-in-one in mini-golf today, does that count? :-P

An albatross will almost always take more skill (assuming a par 5), but a hole-in-one is a more "pure" accomplishment: You took the ball from start to finish in one stroke. It's hard to beat that for simple purity. :-) So, I'd take the HIO. But I hope to card both someday. :-D

I'd prefer the ace because I know exactly 1 person that would even remotely give a crap if I told him I got a double eagle.

I would probably be more excited about the Ace because its a 1 on the scorecard.

It's obvious in this thread when we say ace, we are meaning a hole in one on a par three.  Of course a hole in one on a par 4 is also called an ace but it's more often than not referred to as a double eagle or albatross .

an ace or hole in one on a par 3 is 2 under par.

an albatross on a par 4 or 5 is 3 under par and the hardest score to get in the game of golf (besides a hole in one on a par 5 which I have never heard of)

so tell me again why anybody in their right mind would rather have an ace over an albatross?

how many people in the US get a hole in one on any given day.  Maybe 100?  how about an albatross,  maybe 1 or less than that?  Look at the PGA stats on both of them.

    • I get kidney stones. So 100 oz of water every day. Some nights I drink 32oz between midnight and 6 Am. Which means I dont sleep much.
    • 46 (9 over) Short game and putts were awful!
    • 46+40 for an 86. I just need to play 9 holes on the range before each round. 🤣🤣🤣
    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
