If a player hits a 21 degree 38.25 inch 4 iron 170, how far would he typically hit a 21 degree 40 inch 4 hybrid?  I am trying to fill the gap between the 4 irno and a 3 wood that is hit about 205 yards.  I am not sure if I should get 2 and 3 hybrids or if the gapping will be off.  Any help you can give on that is much appreciated!!!

i'd suggest getting on a monitor and hit different types of hybrids. the reason why i say this is bc not only would a recommendation on a particular club be unwise, but different hybrids of even the same loft will yield you different yardages. i have a 3hybrid but i have it adjusted for a higher loft so much that it's by loft numbers, 1 shy of my 4iron, but goes 20-25 yards further than my 4i. hit as many as you can, make an informed decision as there are TONS of different hybrids out there with varying head and shaft options. with any club, buy what fits your game and what you need in the bag. best of luck!

It also depends on how well you hit your hybrid. I used to play with a 4h and couldn't hit it as far as my 4i even though the loft was higher by 1.5 degrees (at the time the club was meant as a replacement 3i).

My current setup is:

Driver - 10.5

3W - 15 (4.5 degrees from Driver)

3H - 19 (4 degrees from 3W)

4i - 22.5 (3.5 degrees from 3H)

5i - 25.5 (3 degrees from 4i)

Check your iron lofts and go for something that creates good consistent gapping.

If you hit a 3-wood 205, you might want to consider hybrids in general.

It matters whether you have a traditional hybrid, or an iron-replacement hybrid. You are looking at traditional hybrids, which have a shaft length between a FW and an iron.

Some iron models have IR hybrids, which have almost the same loft and shaft length as the same-numbered irons in the set. Mizuno, for example, had JPX Fli-Hi hybrids which can replace longer irons in the JPX-800 and 800 Pro sets. The Cobra S2 Max iron/hybrid set from 2010 had the same idea.

If its a wood-like hybrid, Id say on average a person would hit a hybrid 10-15 yards higher than an iron because the hybrid has more carry distance.

I don't get it. I hit an old persimmon 3-wood about 200-210 yards. I picked up a Big Bertha 3 Hybrid-20 degrees, and it comes now where close to that distance. I tried putting the ball up, middle and back of my stance. I hit it clean with a nice sweeping swing. How do youguys get the distance out of those hybrids?

Your 3 wood is likely 15* and probably has a little longer shaft. You should hit it a little longer than a 20* hybrid that most people will use as a replacement for their 3 iron.

I just got a 4h 21 degree hybrid burner 2.0. It's really great. Just played a 9 hole executive course, only 5 holes of it waiting for my kids league class. On 2 of the par three 175 yards (I adjusted the distance to get 175 for both holes) and teeing up 1/4 " I get it right on the green at a high trajectory. It landed with a definite thump. One was on the green the other just in front of it. From the ground it gets about 185 yards with a really high trajectory. It seemed to hold two greens off a 1/4" tee and an even higher trajectory. I would recommend the hybrid just as good clubs to have rather than irons only. This gives you a choice of landing trajectories. My irons tend to be really flat. It seems to give me more choices, even though I am a relative novice at this game. Just for reference I get about 200 yards from my 5 fairway wood.

I have a 4 hybrid right now, and I feel it goes maybe, 5-10 further if struck on the screws than a 4I, but I'll always prefer a 4iron, and don't carry the hybrid as much anymore.

My 4 hybrid is 22*, so a 3 iron replacement. I get 15 yards more out of it than my 23 degree 4 iron, so the distance gap works. I read that a 2* loft differential would be about right to match up a hybrid with the equivalent iron, so a 22* hybrid should effectively replaces a 20* 3 iron. Seems to make some sense as guideline.

I notice the hybrids are good for about 15yds more than the iron equivalent, and I carry both a 5H and a 5I.  I carry both for shot trajectory, not for closing yardage gaps.  If it is windy, or I am hitting from quite a distance and not really going for the green, I will hit the iron.  My long iron shots (and I think most everyone's long iron shots) have a more piercing trajectory that works better on windy days and also when I want to take advantage of any roll.  But I use the hybrid when I want to hit it high and land it soft, like a 190yd shot into a par 3.

So, noy just about yardage!

I have a 19* hybrid, so theoretically I believe it's a 2-iron equivalent??  My 4-iron (24*) struck well is 205-210, and the hybrid is 220.  If it was true that hybrids went further, then the gap should be bigger, I would think.

So from my standpoint, I would say that hybrids don't fly further for well struck shots.  However, the drop off from a poorly struck shot (I'm thinking toe-hits since those are my "favorite") is probably quite a bit less with a hybrid.

I'd say that a Hybrid doesn't fly further than a well hit club (fairway wood or iron) of the same degree.  But, from my experience, it is easier to get a hybrid airborne.  And flight the ball much higher than an iron.  For instance, my 5 Hybrid I can carry it ~ 200 to 205yds.  Pretty similar carry distance to my 5i (slightly less).  But the Hybrid I can hit very high in the air... With consistency.  The 5i... Not so much.

I only started using hybrids in the last 1.5yrs... And really like the 5H I currently carry.

My recommendation is to get on a launch monitor and hit all different degrees of loft and brands to see what works best for you.  I found this out the hard way....

For instance, I first bought a 4H and 5H R11 Rescues at the same time.  Because I wasn't sure which I would prefer - so I bought them both after hitting them decent on a monitor.  Then I realized that I was using my 5H more often than the 4H... So I traded the 4H in for a 3H RBZ.

5H is a money club.  But my 3H RBZ is currently out of my bag...  I probably should just trade the 3H back in and look for another 3H R11 Rescue.  But I have been doinking around with other parts of my bag... And currently worrying about my 3H which I rarely use is low on the priority list.  But this thread may change that?!

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
