Hey all,

I would like to know what to do about my chipping. I am really hitting descent shots on the golf course because of alot of practise on the driving range. I drive a good 220meter straight down the fairway and with my iron ill strike it that it lands well but as soon as i try and chip the ball onto the green i hit it straight over the green. everytime i can get a birdie score on a par 4 or par 3, i land up picking up my ball because i am doing something wrong with the wedge. no matter how soft i swing, its jumps way over the green. One thing i do is swing through, i dont know if thats right or wrong , maybe u can help me?

Try playing the ball in the middle of your stance with the shaft nearly verticle and use a putting stroke.  IMO, a lot of people play the ball too far back in their stance, which delofts that club and doesnt allow them to utilize the bounce of the clubhead.  That causes a lot of low, hot shots that are difficult to hit well consistently.

Are you hitting it thin that causes it to go over the green or is it more along the lines of distance control? Also, are your misses consistent, you are always over the green or sometimes do you come up way short?

Thats how I chip, only came across it a few days ago. Angle forward, deloft the wedge a bit, much higher percentage of good contact. Chipped in for birdie over the weekend!

Can you please explain what you mean here?

Chipping does not give you birdie opportunities aon par 3s and 4s.

Its just practice really. Just hitting shot after shot around the green with many clubs, or one club depending on how you want to play short game. I prefer to use 3 clubs. 58,52,48 degree clubs. This allows me the option of playing it lower (more back in my stance) or higher (more forward), and the three lofts really help me distances i want and trajectories. I will also use a 4 or 5 iron if i want to just skip over a small patch of rough, usually on tight lies, and get the ball on the green quick.

As for technique, steady head, club head never passes the hands before contact. I don't care if the clubhead is at the hands at impact, some shots require this. But i never have the clubhead ahead of my hands at impact. I like weight more on my front foot, and i keep it there. Also, on longer chips and pitches, don't keep your hips still, let them rotate with the club through impact. This helps maintain the hands ahead of the clubhead.

As for distance control, Shorten the swing, rather than slowing down the clubhead. No matter how slow yous wing, gravity is going to hit the balll pretty far. You really got to get use to hitting them with a shorter swing. Practice chipping with a putting stroke first, all shoulders. Then work in a bit of wrist cock and lengthen the swing a bit. Do this hitting shots and seeing the distance the ball will go. It doesn't take much.

It does if you chip it in.

Im not a fan of delofting the club on a pitch.  It makes it too easy to dig the leading edge in at impact and it makes it more likely that you will hit low, screaming chips that are difficult to control.  Like I said before, just use a putting stroke.  Play the ball in the middle of slightly forward in your stance and treat it like a putt.

chipping is my nemesis too ... what iron do you prefer with a putting stoke ?     would seem you would have to use a 7 or 8 iron as opposed to a wedge for that technique ?

Yes, but moving it forward in your stance makes it more likely to hit the ball on the way up, which means thin, which means bad news. You would have to make a forward move to hit your chip at the bottom of your swing, which seems to be much more inconsistent.  But, if it works for you, OK.

Thats why you have 60% of your weight on your left side while chipping.  Not sure how you would hit it thin playing it in the center of your stance.

I would suggest that you try less lofted clubs, as well as your sand wedge.  Also, learn the "Rule of 12" to get a better understanding about where to land the ball, and what club(s) you might consider:

Every one I have taught this method has immediately improved their short game.

Well it depends on where your weight is. I set it forward and leave it there when I'm hitting pitches (not 100%, but more than 60%).

Regardless of where the weight is (and I agree that more of your weight should be on your front foot), playing a chip shot with the ball forward of the bottom of the swing is a recipe for thin shots, unless you shift your weight even more forward during the shot.  Doing this, in my opinion, leads to inconsistency of contact.
