I seem to be a bit backwards.  Most people seem to hit a 9 iron or other shorter iron better than the longer irons.  However, my 1-iron is probably my most consistent club.  I rarely hit it fat, duff it, top it or anything like that.  Nearly all of my shots with it are very nice straight shots with good height that carry about 180 yards.  Now go down to like a 6 iron or even a 9 at times, and my solid contact is gone...  I've read quotes like "only God can hit a 1-iron" which seems to indicate that its an incredibly hard club to hit (or i am a god..).  I can hit it out of the rough just as well as i can the fairway, which is something i can't do with a hybrid, I always seem to hit it with the toe or top it when I try one of those..

Anyway, just thought it was interesting and wanted to see what others thought on the subject.

My 2-iron is definitely one of my top 2 most consistent irons.  I don't know what it is.  I use it off the tee when a driver is too much.  I can work it left, right and hit it straight consistently well.  I use it on par 5's....in the fairway as well as the rough.  Its a Titleist DCI 762.  I have had it since high school.  "Borrowed" it from a demo station at the country club I worked at.  It's still a great club.

I've been hitting my long irons really well lately, so I put my 3i back in the bag. I feel like I could hit a 2 or a 1, but I'll never get to test it unless I find one :). Although with the amount of swing changes I've been making lately, that long iron goodness could go away before I know it.

My brother has a 2 iron - separate from his main iron set - that he hits quite well. He has hammered 2 irons ever since we were in early high school.

It works great during scrambles - 190 yards out and into the wind, he nails that low 2-iron draw and puts it on the green.

Now, if I could only get him to nail teed-up 7 irons on short par 3s....

Focus, connect and follow through!

I havea 1-iron. It's possible that I could hit a putter farther. It's horrible. I bought it from a thrift store, and based on how it feels at impact, it's no surprise it was in mint condition. Over the years each owner probably only hit it a couple times.

My old Ping Eye 2 set is 1-LW.  For a long time the 1 & 2 iron and the lob wedge stayed at home.  But eventually I found the 1 iron to be a valuable club for my game and I somehow hit it better than the 2 iron so I started bagging it for long, low fairway shots where I might have to get under a tree 40-50 yards out and still put some distance on the ball, or for an occasional 200 yard shot to the green.  Even after I switched to a newer set of irons I sometimes still use the old Ping 1 iron.  And usually, when I leave it at home, I end up wishing I'd brought it.  Several players I've golfed with have never even seen a 1 iron...until they see my old Ping.

Back in the 80’s 1 irons were pretty popular. There seemed to be a streak of guys who couldn't hit tiny drivers

:) yeah just bustin chops, but you should have a 1 iron and 2 iron in your bag and use them for practice at least, makes hitting the other irons so much easier, I dont waste my time with Hybrids, hybrids are for suckers who can't hit muscle backed blades

I read a figure recently that 87% of golfers that pay serious enough to hold a hcp, have at least one hybrid in their bag.   I resist change more than most (I still carry a 4i, when the overwhelming majority carry a 4h today), but rejecting technological advances in equipment is foolish.     I guess by your way of thinking, real men only play persimmon too ...

i hate that the Taylormade Superlaunch irons i have dont go any lower than a 4 iron. ive always loved the long irons too. i hit my 4 iron  200-210 yards and with a nice little draw. i cant hybrid clubs worth a crap off the fairway. give me a long iron and let me pick it clean off the fairway, rough, under trees, ect....

If you're going to troll this site, do it right.  I want more troll character development.  A back story perhaps.  Introduce yourself with a ridiculous story about how you're having trouble with all your wedge shots backing up off the front of the green.  Get a good avatar.  C'mon, put some effort in here please.
