How "legit" is your best round?

Today my friend and I were playing and he started out terribly on the first hole.  Topped drive, topped second shot, topped third shot, fourth shot out of bounds.  Since he usually plays shots from out of bounds if he finds it, he went to look.  After he was unable to find it he just walked to the second tee box and waited for me to finish the hole.  He then proceeded to card a 4, 9, 7 followed by birdie par bogey par bogey to finish the front nine.  Now my friend likes to bail on rounds when he is shooting bad, so I told him that he could play number one again once we finished 18.  My friend has never broken 100 before.  He shot a 51 on the back nine, including a chip in 2 on #17.  Sitting at 91 through the 17 holes he counted, he goes up to hole number one and pars it, for a 95.  I asked if he was going to count that as his life time best and he said, "of course, you said I could play that one again." (Which is true).

My best 9 hole and 18 hole scores also have a little stain to them.  On my 9 hole round I shot a 38 (+3), however on the 9th hole I hit my ball into some trees.  While looking for my ball, I notice a NIke MOJO under one of the trees.  While I thought that my drive would be farther up, i figured my ball must of hit a tree and bounced back or something.  I played this ball out and carded a 6 for a 39.  When I pulled the ball out of the cup I noticed it had a Nike Swoosh on it, and I know that the ball I was playing did not have a Nike Swoosh on it.  So I walked back to where I thought my drive should be and sure enough there is a Nike MOJO ball sitting in a nice wide open area.  I then played this ball ( the correct one) and carded a 5 for a 38.  In taking the 2 stroke penalty for playing a wrong ball it would be corrected up to a 40.  Honestly what are the chances of 2 Nike MOJO balls being that close together, and to top it all off the one laying at just the right angle to where I can not see the swoosh on it.

On my best 18 hole score I carded an 84 (+12), however I played an out of bounds shot on #16 as a lateral hazard.

I have since tied my 18 hole score (from a farther back tee box even), but have only shot multiple 40s for 9.

I'm sure a lot of you will say 100% legit, and my 18 hole 84 from the tips is, and so are all the 40s I have shot for 9.  But looking back was there possibly something you mess up on, or you were playing so much better than usual you over looked something?

My best nine was a 35 on a par 32, the course no longer exists. It's a Lowes and a neighborhood.... /sad face

My best was 79 on very short course (5561 yrd) so I'm not sure if you call that legit.....but I had a wonderful round for sure!!!

That course is kinda shot, but a 79 is a 79.

Yeah I count the 38 as my best, but I am glad that i tied the 84 in a legit manner.

My all time best (79) was a tournament round (first round of my City's annual tournament)... so pretty legit.  It wasn't a hard course (67.6/122) but still, I'll count it.

I just shot mine today (newbie, I shoot a new best once a month hahhaha). and it was strict otherwise it would have blown all previous rounds away.

Long story short, I had a break through last night practicing on the range which brought my driving up to where it should be for someone with my strength/coordination etc. I had bad mechanics and a poor excuse for aiming and I was rarely in the fairway and if I was, it was a 200 yard drive.

Today after figuring out my issue I was averaging 265 according to my gps and actually over shot a green on a 290 par 4 (wind and down hill, I thought I had lost the ball).

Best score ever on this little 9 hole course is a 49 and mostly due to taking 3+ shots to get on the green in on a par 4. Today, I was 7 over going into 8, I had par on a 4 and a 5, bogey on two 4's and a 5, and double bogey on two par 3's (long irons are now my weakness). First drive on 8 came up about 10 yards short of what I needed and got wet so there went two strokes. Drove again, hole in 4 strokes but that little swimming lesson up front cost me 2 strokes. Last hole, par 3 and water again, 177 yards up hill, first ball, straight in the water. Next ball almost made it on the green, chipped it within 5, sunk the ball on the first put to card a 5 on a par 3 so I ended up with a 46 that "could" have been a 42 had I not puked off the tee twice in a row.

Oh well, I'll get it figured out.

I shot a legit 91 last week, my best score yet. It just didn't feel right because the course was so easy, a 68.7/121. The course is like a giant park, covered in 90% grass. If you have a 80 yard snap hook, finding and playing your drive from where ever it lands is no problem. By not having to worry about hitting a bad tee shot that will cost you an extra stroke, builds confidence and makes for better tee shots. It just makes the round much easier lol.

How can you say that you had a score which was not a score.

Why not just say you had 72 and be done with it?

Truly....what is the explanation for saying you had x when you had y?

Does it make sense to say I had 79 but I missed a six footer on the 18th but it lipped out and I called it good? What is the difference?

I hit my drive 250 but I said I hit it 290.  Why?

Heaven help some of you people if ever you show up in an environment where the expectation is that you have a real handicap and play by the rules.

You mad brah?  Haha.  My scoring it like that was the basis for this topic.  Hitting out of bounds and playing it as lateral (while not right) is not a 7 or 8 stroke swing like you are making it out to be.  2 or 3 tops.  If you would read a couple of posts you would see that I disregard that round now, and have tied it from a farther back tee box.  Heaven help you that you don't die of a hearth attack from the anger other golfers generate for you. haha.

I have shot even par three times:  twice on the same par 72 course and once on a par 71.  All three were playing the ball down, and counting penalties correctly..  I am most proud of the 71 as I had never seen that course before and beat one of my best golf buddies that day.

It could be a 2 or 3 stroke difference and it could be an 8 to 10 stroke difference - bottom line is you will never know. I've seen guys rattled by out of bounds shots and put 2 more out of bounds.

It reminds me of my brother in law that has never beaten me, yet always scores lower than me because he shouldnt *have to play by the rules since he doesnt play as much*

I agree with shorty except say your low score was a 66 - saying a low tainted score is your low is kind of weak and will dull the excitement when you legitimately break a barrier.

All my scores are legit - the good, the bad and the ugly.

My best ever is 70.  No mulligans, no gimmes, no footwedges, no "pick-up" doubles.  It's 100% legit.

I will say this, in my 5 years of golf I don't think that I have ever hit a provisional ball out of bounds.  I can't imagine what kind of blow up hole that would be.  I have find that most provisional balls I hit go right where I intended my first drive.  I had to hit a provisional today on a par 5 and ended up with a 7 (Par from my 3rd off the tee, stroke and distance).  I don't get why people see some one not follow a rule, and immediately goes to the extremes.  "Why don't you just count it as a 0 and say that as soon as you set the ball on the tee it magically jumped to the hole on all 18 holes."  What kinda of crap is that.  I bet every single golfer on the planet has flubbed a rule at one point or another , no I will change that and say every golfer has flubbed a rule at one point.  I won't try to defend my 84, I played it wrong, but have since tied it so I don't really have to use it anymore.

And what kind of crap is assuming you would have played the provisional and all subsequent shots perfectly?

I love when I play in tournaments against guys like you - you donate your money and shrink the legitimate field.

From your handicap it doesn't look like you would win that much money
