I'm curious as to how mad other players get when playing.

For me if I hit a bad shot I usually say "shit" and move on. If I hit a really terrible shot sometimes I will toss my club in the air and also drop some profanities but I've never broken a club when mad out on the course and I try to recover back into a good mood quickly so that I don't lower other peoples spirits.

What about you?

I used to not care if I had a bad shot at all, but after playing competitively with others, I get mad at myself and, for some reason, spin my club around in my left hand after my swing.  I am usually only angry when I know I could've done better if I had just taken more time judging distance/aim/break.

My tendency is to externalize the blame. I feel I rebound quicker from a bad shot if I blame a bad lie, a crow making noises, etc etc. If I skull an 8 iron over the green and start telling myself that I'm a bad golfer and I'm playing terribly today, chances are, my next chip will be just as bad and I will get angrier. I feel the easiest way is to blame something else, and just convince myself that I have been unlucky. Now after the round, I will go more in-depth about why I'm not hitting a particular shot right, but on the course I try to externalize blame so I can avoid exploding and having my game fall to bits. The more frustrated I get, the worse I play.

(I played with a guy from another high school that would talk to Mortimer, his otter driver head cover, and blame Mortimer for bad shots and missed putts. Pretty funny to see how he controlled his anger.)

Maybe I'd better get an animal head cover to comfort me on the course!

I used to be a hot head, but came to the realization that I'm not that good, so I'm going to hit some bad shots.  I actually lost a putter one time.  And it was during a match!  I had my opponent down one and it was the 16th hole. I was on the green and he was in the bunker.  He made the sand save and I three putt.  So I fired my putter back toward the cart and it went into a tree and I couldn't find it.  Had to putt with my driver on the last two holes.  Won the match, but felt like an idiot.

I usually only get mad about mental errors, bad alignment, wrong club, bad read and try and shrug off physical ones, but I catch myself getting mad about those occasionally, I will admit to losing my cool when I was younger but have learned to reign it in over time.

i used to get really mad.  throwing my clubs in a tree.  i oncce threw my clubs at a tree until on of them stuck, lol.  i took some time off and realized i should be mad at myself, not the game or my clubs.  i hit the bad shot, they are my clubs and my ball lol.  i will still slam the club head on the ground and grumble to myself, nothing too violent anymore.  i guess i used to think i was better than i was, lol.  that opinion has changed significantly.

I don't get too mad... I've broken a club before, but that was a crazy happening. All I did was drop it at the top of my follow through and it fell and snapped in half. Weirdest thing that's ever happened.

Now when I get mad I'll pretend like I'm going to slam my club into the ground in front of me and instead give it a couple taps.

It's funny but I have a bigger temper at the range than I do at the course.  I cuss a little when I'm out on the course but I don't throw anything or have a tantrum.

Sadly I get pathetically mad, but only when I play by myself. Usually for repeated crap during a round like the day I was hitting thin the whole time or inability to control the driver every drive. I know I am not great but I usually get bothered by out of the ordinary or previously repaired issues that resurfaced. I get embarrassed after though. I am going to try to control it more.

When I was in my early 20s and was just beginning to learn the game, I duffed a drive 20 ft....got mad, pulled out my 3 wood and duffed it into the water.   I got sooo angry and threw my three wood which in turn landed in the water.  I stood there looking at the ripple of the water, feeling really stupid and walked off the course.  I told myself I would never ever get mad on a course again.  For 20 years I have played without a three wood in my bag as a reminder that getting mad at a game is a stupid thing.  This year was the first year I have replaced it, (I figured 20 years was enough of a penalty)  All in All it was a great lesson and I have promised myself that I would keep that attitude.

If I get mad on the course again I will quit the game for good.

I don't really get mad, a bad shot might get a profanity, a string of bad shot might get a string of profanities, but that's it.  I never throw a club or throw a tantrum.  If I hit a really bad streak I might try to take some extra time and collect my thoughts, I've played to long and had to many up's and down's to get mad about doing something I enjoy.

I do get upset when im playing badly. Like this morning. I dont throw things, but I tend to swear a bit and get a lot less social.

I play Golf to escape from the stress and frustrations of life. I get mad for a few seconds when I hit a bad shot, but then I look forward to getting to try a more challenging shot, because of my bad shot.

The hard part for me is getting the stress of regular life out of my head, so that I can loosen up and take a good, relaxed swing.

    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
