Golfer Attacked for Slow Play

Galt vice principal allegedly attacks man with golf club

Galt High School vice principal Robert E. Rappleye Jr., 61, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon July 13, Angels Camp police officials said.

The vice principal's alleged weapon of choice? A golf club.

Rappleye, an Elk Grove resident, and others went golfing that day at the Greenhorn Creek Golf Resort in Angels Camp. Rappleye became frustrated at the slow pace of a group of golfers playing ahead on the 18th hole, according to a police news release.

A husband and wife in the group ahead approached Rappleye to talk about the problem. Witnesses say the husband became angry when Rappleye used foul language directed to the husband's wife, according to the release.

The argument turned violent when Rappleye swung one of his golf clubs at the husband, the news release said.

The husband tried to block the swing with his left arm, injuring him.

Rappleye swung a second time with the husband turning his back to defend himself. Rappleye struck the husband's left shoulder blade, the news release said.

Audrey Kilpatrick, chief business official for Galt Joint Union High School District, said the district has cooperated with the police investigation. She would not say whether Rappleye is on leave, but she confirmed he is currently considered an employee for the district.

Officer Chris Johnson of Angels Camp Police Department arrived at the golf course to find the two men still arguing. The victim was bleeding when Johnson arrived, the news release said. The victim pointed out Rappleye as the man responsible for his injuries.

Rappleye admitted the attack, the news release said.

Rappleye was arrested on scene and taken to the Calaveras County jail.

The anti slow play sentiment is getting ridiculous recently. What the f*ck is so bad about a 4.5 hr round? My son and I got hit into 3 f0cking times a couple months ago.

We had a similar situation on the driving range at my course. An older gentleman got tired hitting balls so he left half his bucket and went to sit under a tree for a bit. A younger guy came along and thought the balls were left behind and started hitting them. All of a sudden here comes the old guy cussing, screaming, and swinging a golf club. The young guy then gets his golf club and they procede to have a mini sword fight. The cops were called both wanted the other guy arrested for assault. It was ugly. In the end neither got hauled off to jail but both got escorted off the driving range. Funny thing was they each bent their clubs in the sword fight and had to bring them to us to get repaired!

Jesus Christ what is wrong with people?  I really don't like slow play myself but I don't get so bent out of shape.  Drink more beer and listen to the birds sing.

I thought I would throw this article out there since there has been talk recently of slow play.  You might want to watch out with guys like this out there. Robert E. Rappleye Jr., 61 (a high school vice principal) apparently became upset that the group ahead of his group ( a husband and wife) were playing too slow for his comfort.   The article does not say what Rappleye did to provoke the couple to approach him, but I can imagine some of the things that were yelled.  Nonetheless, the couple approached Rappleye's group to "discuss" the problem.  Evidently, Rappleye used foul language directed toward the guy's wife that he did not like.  One thing led to another and Rappleye ended with hitting the guy with a golf club.

Now I've seen some people get mad on the course and I've heard some things yelled in these situations. But I can't believe anyway can take it that far.  People just seem like they have lost their minds these days.

Have you ever gotten this fed up with slow play?  Not enough to hit someone with a golf club, but enough to confront someone?

Playing in Fl one vacation day and came over a little rise in the fairway and saw 4 guys squared off and swinging clubs at each other.I played thru and kept going.

Last week in our league, my team's C&D; players, with C player being an a** most of the time, the 2 C players almost came to blows, resulting in our C player being asked to leave the league and our D player was so fed up that he just quit !

I don't get that wrapped up with little things since the 1970ties.....just consider the source and go on.

The entire course was backed up, but it was a beautiful day and we were right on a 4.5 hr pace, so I didn't mind at all, but apprently the group of low cappers behind us felt outraged that golfers of their caliber should have to endure such nonsense, and they thought that they would speed up play by hitting us. Two of their shots slammed into the bunker we were standing in, with one going right over my head.

I'll tell you what, if that ever happens again, I will go back and just start swinging instead of calling the golf shop.

This sh!t has got to stop. If you want to play a 3 hr round on a weekend, don't go. If you do, just relax and plan on spending half the day at something you should enjoy, instead of trying to get it over with as fast as possible.

Something similar happened to my wife and I a few years back on a Par 3 course. The course was backed up as usual for a Saturday. My wife and I were putting and this foursome hits into us on a 160 yard hole. The ball didn't come close to hitting us, but it took everything in me not to go back to the tee box and go Rampage Jackson on somebody. I definitely would've gotten my @ss kicked cuz it probably would've ended up being a 4 on 1 fight. Golf is supposed to be a gentlemens game right?

This guy has a position of authority over high school kids?  I hope that he was dismissed.  I can't imagine any parent wanting his kids being taught or supervised by someone as volatile as this guy.

This.  I usually will let one by while turning around to see if it was an accident or not, but if it happens a second or third time, i'll either take out my 4 wood and knock it back at them, or pick it up and throw it into a near by hazard.  If they wanna come up and say anything about it, go ahead, try it. I'm 6'2" 195 and my dad is 6'4" 240. We'd love to take on any challengers
