I know the actual answer will be to go and hit irons and find what works best for me, and I am going to do that. But, I want to know some of your experiences, so...

I got back into golf again this year after a 3 year break due to being laid off. I was playing about once a week, and consistantly shot in the low 80's; broke 80 three times. I have been playing again this year, and am scoring in the mid to high 80's. My clubs are as follows:

Callaway x-18 Pro 3-PW (only carry 5-PW)

Nickent 3+ Hybrid

Callaway BB (2007 model I believe) 3 and 5 woods

Taylor Made R5 driver

Odyssey White hot #1 putter

I am looking to replace my irons, just to get a little more forgiveness while I am getting back into the game. I have looked at and hit the Mizuno JPX 800HD irons and liked the feel (first time I had ever hit Mizunos and loved it!). I am also looking at the 800 Pro line (not hit them yet). I want the forgiveness, but do not want to be disappointed that I bought the SGI irons and have to go out and find a set next year that are more players irons. I like keeping what I have for some time.

Anyone made the move to SGI and wish they had not done it? Or made that move and loved it? Share your story! And of course, share your opinions about the irons listed above.

Again, I know I have to go and hit and get fit. I will do that. Just thinking out loud here.

Thanks!

I love it when everyone just says "go hit a bunch".  Well unfortunately not everyone has many places where they live where they can just "go hit a bunch" and I don't think hitting off the mat at Dick's is going to really give me a feel for a new iron.  When I replaced my Rawlings RXP irons years ago, I went to Dick's, starting looking at irons and I could just sorta tell by looking at them at address whether or not they had that "look" I want at address.  Many tour pros will even say people underestimate the confidence you'll get from just the way the club looks at address.  Well I stumbled upon the $299 set of Game Improvement Nike Ignite II's that I wound up buying without ever hitting a ball with them... and after a few rounds of getting used to them I absolutely LOVE them.  Another 2 seasons or so I might upgrade again and this time actually get fitted, but where I live Dick's is pretty much the only option for buying golf equipment.  There's a few places that actually do fittings around here and have PGA Pro's on staff that do the fittings... but they often carry maybe 1 or 2 brands at the most.  1 place that seems reputable in my area carries Ping and Cleveland, that's it.  So much for "hitting a bunch and seeing what I like"

Callaway XR 9.5 + 1, Taylormade R15 3 Wood, Burner 3 Rescue, Callaway XHot 5H, Warbird 4H, Nike Vapor Fly 6-AW Irons, Titleist Vokey 54, 60 Wedges, Taylormade Rossa Fontana Putter, Srixon Z-Star Tour Yellow.

Best Score 2017:  82 (Traditions at the Glen, Par 70)

Favorite Course - Conklin Players Club (Par 72) - Best Score 86

I also took time off of golf and just got back into it 4 years ago...... and I am on my 3rd set of irons. I went with what I knew when I stopped playing... I liked TaylorMade before so I will like them again so I bought a set of Burner irons. Played a year with them and sold them and bought the Burner 2.0's.... played with them until June of this year and replaced them with the clubs I looked at originally at back when I came back to golf....a set of Mizuno's. My wife bought me the JPX 800HD's for Father's Day this year. I couldn't be happier with the clubs. When I hit them correctly I am spot on... the mishits are the golfer, not the club. The only thing I am changing is going to a mid-size grip which I should have done the day I picked them up.

I sold my 2.0's to my golf partner in league, this Tuesday I finally hit a couple of them side by side with my Mizuno's off the fairway after league. All that did was confirm I had made the right choice and finally found "my" irons. I hit the 800's further and on better lines. The feel was completely different and feedback was to. I used the same ball from the same sleeve.

So cliff notes..... I like my Mizuno JPX 800HD's a lot.

Try the Adams Tight Lies 1208 series uniflex steel 4~GW. They posess great perimeter weighting a wide sole and really nice balance . These sticks were originally geared towards the mid to high hdcp players but have since seen a boom in sales due to price and quality. They hit deep with a nice high trajectory and what I dig is the 4 and 5 irons arent hybrids but your classic wrench. check em out and I guarantee you wont be dissapointed.

An old pro once told me this....."No matter what youre going through in life....Never sell your golf clubs."

Thank for the replies. Actually was talking to my pro today and he also mentioned that the AP2 would be a good fit for me. He also recommended a stiff shaft after we did some hitting and comparing ball flight an feel on the range today. Hit a few irons and really liked the lighter shafts. I play the Dynamic Gold R300 in my x-18s, but the lighter Dynalite s300 felt great I will also look at the Adams when I go to Edwin Watts and Golf Galaxy this weekend to hit and look at my options.

Jason, If you are considering the AP2's, then I urge you to try the Mizuno JPX 825's.  You may not realize it, but they have a beveled leading edge which helps to prevent "digging in".....If I had not not just purchased the JPX 800 HD's, I would be gaming the 825's for sure.

    • Sad tale.  Both the A's and Raiders.  IMO, cities shouldn't be building stadiums for MLB/NFL teams.  But that's the world we live in.   DAY 3:  30-min range session with irons and wedges.  Working on follow thru -- no hooks! 🙂
    • Backswing: Body is responsible for taking the club around. Arms are responsible for making the club go up.  Downswing: The process is reversed. Weight Forward So, your arms need to do stuff. Set up to the ball. Do not raise your arms at all. Rotate your body as you would in the swing. You will notice your hands stay down near your right hip. So, how does the club get up? Your arms raise it up. You can't take your arms out of the swing. What you are describing might be more of a feel, but it also might not be correct.
    • It depends on what you mean by "while the core remains still" I wouldn't consider his core "remaining still" here, DJ's abs, belly button, and belt buckle have rotated almost 90 degrees by the top of the backswing. Those components of his core then have to rotate/uncoil on the downswing. Far from remaining still IMO.
    • It’s going to change but your basic setup feel should be about the same. Your body kind of adjusts to length and lie angle of the club. You’ll want to pay attention more to ball position as you change clubs more than how bent over you are. I understood what you meant from what your wrote.
    • Oh I probably was thinking the wrong thing or the wrong way when I typed the golf swing was more of a body swing (in my mind).  The in my mind part probably should have said in my opinion or based on what I have read.  Just meant the body needs to be involved more than the hands and swinging the arms while the core remains still.
