I'm pretty new to golf and really love the game. I try to practice everyday and want to get my game to the highest level I can get it to. I currently have a set of ping zing knock off irons and want to get a good pro line set. I'm inconistant hitting the ball. My question to you guys is should I get a set of game improvement irons or something that are more playable for when my game improves? I want to be able to work the ball and plan to put in the work to do it. Im a very competive and determined person and wont be happy until mu game has developed. Thanks any input would be appreciated.

From my personal experience, I would advise buying a nice used set of game improvent irons. Pretty cost effective... Use them until your swing has some consistency. Set a goal. "I will get new irons when I break 90." Or something similar... You will learn, set a goal and feed your competitive spirit. You will also save enough to pay for three or four lessons! My $0.02. If it works you can buy me a beer someday. If not, I will buy you one. Can ya beat that deal?

^^^ sound advice! Get some game improvement irons, a couple of seasons old, Calloway & taylormade prices drop sharply after a couple of seasons but try as many brands as you can, set a budget and stick to it, then, when your swing gets consistent and your regularly hitting around 90, spend a fortune and get fitted for a set you really like! There's nothing better than spending a fortune on really nice fitted clubs once you know what you like and benefits you, if you do that when starting out it can often lead to wasted money!

I know you said they are knock offs but still they are also game improvement, you may want to consider re-gripping your current set as long as the shafts are fine that way no need to spend a lot of money until your ready for a more accomplished players iron.

I bought my current irons from someone considerably taller than me and didn't think to consider the lie angle until joining this forum. I'm 5'10" so I think a set of irons with standard length and lie would help my consistency some.

Irons can be bent and shafts can be cut but if your really set on getting something then you should have no problem at your height finding a new set.

Lets get this over with shall we? OP, you should most definitely buy a set of blades. They are the most workable, provide most feedback, have the smallest sweet spot and are the set you are gonna keep worrying over until you get a set. Having said all that, try to get the design where the metal is not pushed out to the toe, to help toe shots, but rather get the the center mass classical design. The center mass is where you will learn how to hit, because they will punish you. The feed back is immediate, very detailed and occasionally painful. They usually wont go as far as some of the near hybrid GI irons, but they will be accurate, or not, with little balance in between. There are tons for sale used, just do yourself a favor and get a shaft one flex softer so you have an easier go of getting them airborne. Plus you wont lose a ton of money when you learn what you want and sell them.

@J M Brown The only right answer is to get what feels best for you. And note that it's a bit of a myth that you need blades to work the ball, and it's even more of a myth that you even need to work the ball. Go to Golfsmith or PGA Superstore or Roger Dunn and try out any and all sets you are interested in (you can even get fitted with launch monitor) and buy the ones you like the best. It's really as simple as that.

This is good advice.  You don't want to second guess your choice, so take some time and get what feels and looks best to you.  If budget is an issue, then you can always go the used route.  An example (not an endorsement) would be to try irons like Ping G30.  If you like them, but don't want to spend a lot on new irons, then go to the used section or e-Bay and look for G25 or G20 irons.  They are previous models, work really well and you can get them for 1/2 price or less.

Indian, not the arrow.  Find a qualified teaching pro and take a lesson.  I went to a golf school when a beginner and learned a lot.  I have taken four private lessons from a qualified teacher and have learned some very valuable information about the swing.  I am a double digit handicapper so take what I say with a grain of salt.  Until your swing is somewhat consistent, it will be tough to get fitted for the many shaft options.

Yep. The best players in the world hit their stock shot 90-95% of the time and GI irons are no more difficult to "work", when hit on the sweet spot, than the most blade irons.

Until your swing is somewhat consistent, it will be tough to get fitted for the many shaft options.

Even golf swings for higher handicappers are pretty "consistent", things aren't really changing from one swing to another. If you recorded two swings, a good shot and a bad shot, you wouldn't see much difference between the two swings. Quick example here.

I'm in the same boat. Currently playing Hippo knockoffs but I really like those D or C 100 irons from Wilson. Just can't afford them at the moment. Any advice on a step up from hippos but a step slightly below Wilsons staffs irons?

I am brand new to the game so a friend gave me his old set. I am having trouble making ball contact and taking to much divots. I think I should get a lesson or 2. I'm not the most gifted as an athlete. Lol but guys at work asked me to play so it sou ds like a good hooby to get into.

Well I usually shoot around 90 so i'm not a good golfer by any means. And guess what, I play blades or close to them (just got some Mizuno MP58 irons). I play them because I like how they look and i hit them as well as any GI club.

What I would say about forgiveness of blades vs gi clubs is that blades give good direction dispersion and GI irons give good distance dispersion on mishits.

I would say play whatever you like. Go on eBay, PGA superstore, golf galaxy, goldsmith, global golf, secondswing, or anywhere that has used clubs. Buy anything that was released since 2000 or newer and is close to your fitting specs with shaft flex and length and lie. I would not spend more than 200$ cause great sets can be had for that price. Don't worry if the clubs are GI or blades, buy whatever you like the look and feel of.

The ping i3 blades are nice semi cavity backed clubs. The grooves will be illegal in 2024 but if that doesn't matter to you Pings are built like tanks and will last forever. Be sure to evaluate the grips and shafts on used clubs because replacing those may be more expensive than the clubs themselves.

This wasn't the point of my post, but i am selling a set of Mizuno tzoid pro forged irons. Standard length/lie/loft on eBay for a great price because they are in fantastic shape.
