Ok... I don't know how to put this lightly, I just don't get long irons up in the air like I used... I hit my 4-iron well, I just don't get the height on my 1,2, and 3 irons anymore (really never did with the butter knife)... So I am looking into some hybrids? Any suggestions for something on the cheap... I would probably need 2 or 3 as I'll probably take out the 1-iron completely... I'm probably looking to have my bag look something like this: Driver, ?? Hybrid, Hybrid, Hybrid, then either 4-PW, 52, 56 or 5-Pw, 52, 56, 60, then Obviously Putter... I like the old Nickent 3dx line, the only problem is they dont fit in with my weak lofted irons... Help!

What's in Shane's Bag?

Go to an online retailer such as The Golf Warehouse  and look at used.  I bought some adams a few years ago for about fifty bucks each and still use them.  Buy one at a time to see what find what you like.

I use Cobra hybrids and like them a lot, they are adjustable as well. Weird because I use Ping irons, TaylorMade 3 and 5 woods, and a Cleveland driver. I guess as they say, whatever fits your game and feels right.

I'd also look at the older TaylorMade RBZ stage 2 hybrids. Very easy to hit, I have the 22* 4H, but I use the Adams 19* 3H, as it has a titanium face for better carry, still a easy hitting club.

The RBZ stage 2 hybrids can be had for about 40.00-45.00 USD, got mine from Global Golf, just cuz they are a sponsor, and are great to do biz with..

In my "modern" bag I have Callaway Heavenwood 3H and 4H, 20* and 23* respectively. They have the Callaway firm graphite shaft. I love them. You could probably take out your 1-3 irons with no other changes. I bought them 2-3 years ago from the guy that does my club work for $25 each. He changes out equipment and takes care of his stuff, they were in pristene condition.  I think you would like something similar, and probably some of the Adams hybrids with a similar shape might appeal to you. Look around and don't forget unconventional places like Goodwill or pawn shops if you are looking to score on the cheap.

Don

In the bag:

+1 to this, Adams makes a wide variety of hybrids, I would suggest going to a golf store, demo some of them, then look for them on eBay.  I actually bought a hybrid off eBay, played it for a while, then resold it on eBay and bought another one.  Did that with 4 or 5 kinds before I settled on a TaylorMade.

+1 to this, Adams makes a wide variety of hybrids,

I have tested all the recent Adams hybrid models this past year. Half I can hit, half I can't. You just have to try them out.

Adams has four current hybrid models and about eight more from the last 24 months.

I carry an Adams V4 model 4H, and substitute a V4.3H for my 7W during winter months.

Nickent has returned to life as a Golf Galaxy brand, with some new hybrid models.

Whatever brands you choose, you might consider a 2H and 4H combination. A 4H likely will carry a club longer than a 4i, in part because of the longer shaft.

Since you use TEE stuff why not look at those? I just bought new old stock TEE XCG6 2-4 hybrids on eBay for $69.99 each. Probably could find them cheaper individually, I bought the set.

The problem with that isn't that they are bad clubs, I love my exotics clubs (just ordered some Tour Proto wedges)... the issue is finding the right lofts... most of their 2 hybrid lofts are 16-17°, Their 3-Hybrid lofts are 18-20° (only the Trilogy and X-Rail have 20°) The problem lies where if I carry my "ancient" V-Blades (from 2000, pre-Exotics) my 1-iron is 17°, 2-iron 19°, 3-iron 21°, I'm probably going to dump my 4-wood for a bit... as I tend to yank it left (that's my miss with it) and I can't hit it off a peg to save my life... maybe just need practice with that... I guess I could do 2, 3, 4 hybrid and carry the 4-iron, but that takes out a wedge, with the V-Blades I really don't need a 52° wedge though because my PW is 49°... My other set of irons are my Exotics CNC Forged... again I could do D, 2h, 3h, 4h, 4-iron-PW... but again that takes a wedge out of the bag... I could do Driver, 2h, 4h as WUTiger suggested... which would work because it would play like Driver, 4w, 3I almost... I was browsing on eBay and saw a CB2 16° hybrid for a good price... But I digress... The reason I was looking at the older Nickent Hybrids was because their lofts go from 14°-29° is 1.5° intervals, so it would be a little easier to fill the loft gaps and still carry four wedges... Other than the older Nickent Hybrids, Do any of you know of any hybrids with comparable lofts to my long irons in both sets?

I suppose everyone has different needs but I don't get too exact with long club lofts/gaps. The reason not using them for approach shots much, usually just second shots on par 5s and from the tee. With modern lofts I don't use a 4i. I view hybrids as another choice of fairway more than iron replacement. I choose simliar lofts to what fairways I would be using becuase at this time I prfer the shorter shaft and utility.

True on the modern lofts comment... if I had a set with more modern lofts say 26° 5-iron, 46° PW... I probably wouldn't have a use for a 4-iron... I was looking at the lofts of the Rocketbladez/speedbladez lines and the 3-iron is the Same loft as my 1-iron! If I had a set of those (I don't thank goodness), my longest iron would probably be a "5", but I digress again... sorry Erik, I know stay on topic... As I was saying though, long iron/hybrid loft gaps probably aren't that important... with my more traditionally lofted irons it does get tricky though... I wish this set make up business is as easy as it was when I started 18 years ago, 12° Driver, 7-wood, 5-PW, SW, putter and that was it...

Depends on the golf shaft and center of gravity of the clubhead as well as the loft. Best thing to do would be just to make sure each club has a good gap, 10-12 yards. Then just hit clubs and find out what fills in best on the top and bottom of the iron set based on your game.

Really this whole Modern Loft discussion is mute because the gaps are still maintained.,

. Agree. I ended up with a 17 hybrid and 21 hybrid because they evened my gaps.

Lofts is just part of the consideration. The original "traditional" hybrids had shaft lengths between FWs and numbered irons.

Now, some of the hybrids are considered "iron replacement" clubs such as the Muzuno JPX FLI-HI hybrid irons.

These FLI-HI come in 3H through 6H. 3H = 19º / 38.75" and 4H = 22º /38.25". The 4H has the same loft and shaft length as the JPX-850 4-iron.

In comparison, my Adams V4 "traditional" hybrids have longer shafts, but the same lofts: 3H = 19 º and 40.5" and the 4H = 22º and 39.75".

These V4 are at least 1.5" longer than the same-lofted FLI-HI hybrid irons. Thus, the V4 3H would likely fly a club farther than the FLI-HI 3H.

(Unless, of course, someone got more benefit from shorter shaft than longer shaft - that's why you need a side-by-side test).

That shaft length is important too. I have 2 adjustable hybrids, the 17 is really a 16, and my other 17 is really an 18. It was the shaft length of one vs the other ultimately, and for getting down into the crap and getting the ball out and up, the shorter, more upright club won a spot in my bag. Now the 17 that is my 3w stayed like it came.
