With a handicap of 16.6, My average round is probably around 90 with good rounds being around 85 and bad ones being 95+.

Do you guys think that is the right score for my handicap?

If you play to your handicap your average score on a par 72 should be 88.6.

That's not accurate.

Your handicap is the best 10 of your last 20 scores. And… par rarely matches up with the course rating.

OP, your handicap seems fairly accurate for you averaging 90 or so.

In addition to what iacas said, your course handicap is adjusted off your index by the slope of the course you're playing, so it wouldn't always be that simple.  His course handicap on a course with a slope of 135 would be 20, while on a course with a slope of 115 it would be 17.

@Iacas is right, of course. But how are you determining your handicap? If you're using the most popular, USGA GHIN system, you will have the ability to see every score and differential posted and it will tell you exactly your scoring average for your last 20 rounds.

If your index is 16.6 you should shoot an 88.6 half the time on a course with a 72 CR and 113 slope.

No that is not even remotely correct, if we are talking about the USGA system.  Discounting, of course, the impossibility of actually shooting an 88.6.

It is more like 20-25% of the time.  If someone has a 16.6 index and is averaging 88.6 for half his rounds on the course you indicated he is likely a sand-bagger.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Yeah a 16 wouldn't average 88 but it wouldn't be real far off. Probably something like 90ish. I average 81-83 depending how well I play in a stretch . Should be able to run reports from GHIN but they could be incomplete if you don't post HBH scores.

Here's my personal data:

Handicap index is 6.9, which gives me a course handicap of 8 on my home course, slope = 132

Course rating is 71.0, so "low 10 of the last 20" rounds at home should average 79

The average of my last 20 scores is 81.6

Over the last 12 months, I have 69 scores posted, high of 90, low of 70, averaging 80.3.

If you average the best HALF of your NET scores (using your slope adjusted course handicap), you should be around the course rating.  The average of ALL your net scores should be several strokes higher.  Your NET score should be at or below the course rating around 25% of the time.  If you do better than that, your handicap will probably go down.

For the OP, a 16.6 index would probably yield a 17 or 18 on-course handicap.  Assuming the course rating is around 70 to 71, an average score for all rounds of 90 to 92 seems pretty reasonable to me.

Of course, in reading my references to slope and course rating, I hope everyone understands that I'm using the USGA system.  I really don't know how this translates to the CONGU system used elsewhere in the world.

You're right, it would actually be 89.6. The GHIN system uses .96 of your average differentials to calculate the index. When I said 89.6 I meant half of the best scores averaged that and the other half were the worst of the last 20, i.e. the scores that comprise the anti handicap index.

Not sure the phrase "even remotely correct" would be accurate, as I was remotely correct, just not 100%.
