If  you hit an explosion shot - float ball out on cushion of sand - the front-bottom of the sole.

If you're picking it clean out of damp sand, more the leading edge.

Focus, connect and follow through!

There is no situation where you'd want to try to pick the ball clean from a greenside bunker, unless you are hit a sideways shot and hit the greenside bunker on the wrong hole from the tee....and you're playing the shot like a fairway bunker shot to recover back to the correct hole........LOL    I remember Sergio doing this at Doral and he made a great par save.

If playing the correct hole from a greenside bunker,  you're always going to use the bounce!!

I've been having success lately hitting out of green side bunkers using a flop-like shot (face open, contact the sand closer to the ball) That's the best I can describe it and it had been working like a charm until Monday.

I played a round while it was raining and the bunkers were wet. Anyway, I couldn't get out of the damned bunker using this technique. I finally closed the face slightly and aiming a little bit more behind the ball while swinging harder was able to pop it out.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but could this have been due to the sand being wet and packed down?

Your over analyzing it. The big lie about sand traps is there is one way to do it. The course I play waters the course and  between holes so erratically that the sand traps play different from hole to hole. When you dig your feet in you have to look down and see how deep you go to wet sand. The wetter and stiffer the sand the closer to the ball you have to hit. When you get to a quarter of an inch or so you use a straight blade and play it like a fat shot. The recipe is a full swing will go 1/3 the distance of your club and then roll some. Most people play wet sand too far back from the ball and bounce up into the ball and skull it. When the sand gets dry on top and wet below, one way to play it is to bend your knees a lot and try to skim through the dry part of the sand. This is a harder shot, it has to be real shallow and takes finesse to figure out the distance because done right the ball comes out very easy. Don't worry about the bottom of your club, worry more about staying down with bent knees, having a proper stance and swing plane will make you club do the right thing.

Depends on lie and condition of the bunker. I play open face, bounce contact shots mostly but I often hit standard bump and run shots from hard packed sand when the lip is shallow. My experience is muni sand sucks and bunker condition poor unless nobody has been in it since morning crew was out. I avoid them.
