I Wish That Poster Would ...

We often hear, “that is a 1st World problem,” when we complain about many of the trivial irritants we encounter during the day.  The following list clearly falls into that category.  In my defense, there is not a lot of golf being played here in the Frozen Mitten right now and that likely explains my irritable mood.  Also, I know at some point I have been guilty of a number of items on the list and likely a lot more!  Still, sometimes it feels good to just vent.

·         Very long posts.  Yes, I don’t have to read them if I think they are too long.  At times, however, I start reading one without realizing that is it going to require scrolling & scrolling & scrolling.

·         Posters who ask a question but don’t answer the question themselves.  For example, “Who is your favorite PGA player to watch?”  Well, who is yours?  It is one thing to ask a question when you have no idea how to proceed.  When someone, however, asks a theoretical question or wants an opinion on a topic, the person posing the question should also provide an answer.

·         A question is posted such as: “What was your single best golf shot of 2016.” Inevitably a poster responds, “The three shots that come to mind …” and they proceed to describe in detail the three shots.  Hey!  The question was the single best shot, not your best three (or five or whatever).

·         Posters who, for whatever reason, choose not to reveal where they are located but post comments like, “around here the average cost of a round of golf is $25.”  Thanks for the info but where exactly is “here”???  No one is asking for your address but if one listed a state or region in their profile then comments related to one’s location would make sense.

·         If you have Game Golf and state that 170 yards is the perfect distance for your 7 iron, at least make sure that your Game Golf stats back you up.

So, aside from this blog post, what type of things irritate you a bit when participating in or reading golf forums?

You must be referring to me but I  am pretty sure I posted FOUR different best shots of 2016. :-P  Please accept my most humble apologies for that. At the end of the day I went with that last one where I chipped from like 50 yards away and drained it to save par on my home course home/backyard hole.

Irritating are people who will argue for the sake of argument. People who use semantics to try and continue an argument when the core of the matter has been addressed. Persons who go on and on and on and on about nothing in particular.

No, but apology accepted.  ;-).  I was actually thinking about a site that ends in "x".  This place works well.

It's a double-edged sword though, isn't it? While I wish some posters would get a clue, I really love the way things stay interesting when people post in zany ways.

The long posts can make our eyes glaze over, but it's cool someone had the passion and time to write all that crap! :-D

So bring on the quirkiness, the inability to follow directions, the refusal to search for prior threads on the same topic, the bad grammar, the ignorance of sound body mechanics and practice regimens, some occasional immaturity, and poor decision making from time to time! Love it!

I can bring the immaturity in spades. Hey!  Look behind you!!!

It does work well. I have only briefly perused that other site. I'm good over here.

Agree with all of that, with a couple of caveats:

      • Sometimes I'm afraid that if I give an answer to a question I've posed that I might influence the following answers.  Sometimes I don't want to do that.
      • The gamegolf thing ... a lot of shots go into making up that average distance and most of them are going to lower it from what you consider to be the "stock" for that distance, since that's usually best on a full, hard swing.  3/4 shots, recovery shots, chip shots (not sure if the device knows how to exclude those), and of course, mishits. Of course, that said, I looked at my gamegolf and it actually shows my 7-iron average higher than I consider to be my 7-iron distance ... so perhaps I'm completely wrong. :-P

My apologies as well, I'm guilty of asking a question and not providing my own answer, so here goes:

Q: Who is your golf nemesis?

A: I'm not good enough to have a real nemesis yet, most people I play with try to help me get better. However, the person I'd most like to beat is my brother in law, who is an a*hole.

Q: What is your process when you "lose" your swing:

A: I don't know how to troubleshoot my own swing. For the last week I have been struggling, after striking the ball so well (even Driver) for most of January. I don't want to go back for another lesson just yet. Very frustrating.

      * * * * *

If I may, the thing that irritates me most in a forum post is when people compare golf to other sports. For example, "I have been playing/practicing (insert sport here) all my life, so I am a pretty good athlete". Um, no dude. I am still a pretty good athlete at 41 years of age, and I'm barely hanging on to golf. There is nothing else like golf.

Skulls and flier lies from the rough influence the stats too.  ;-)

Not reading the post.  Assuming that every post that doesn't parrot exactly what you've said or believe is "hating".  Not understanding that when a person questions (cross-examines) an observation, assertion, or argument, it doesn't necessarily mean they believe or are advocating the opposite position (or that they hate you).

Did I mention not reading the post?  It really annoys me when someone is in a flame-fest and they flame on me--even though my posts clearly disavow whatever hate they've saddled me with.

It boggles my mind when a 20+ is arguing with a scratch or single digit about how the golf swing works or should be taught. I consider myself lucky when a more accomplished player or pro takes their time to help me out. Do you go into a karate dojo and lecture a black belt on how to throw a punch because you won a street fight or two in your day? I'm convinced that some people would.

      Nice blog!

I'm not really irritated by comments made on this site any more. I used to be, very much so, but I finally realized that most people just react to something based upon their own preconceived notions. It's not a personal thing at all, especially when we should consider that any post could be from a completely different part of the world, different culture or whatever.

Now, I'm actually awed by the amount of information we can get here and feel like there is a common connection to everyone who plays golf around the world. We used to have political discussions as well, but that turned into a real mess. So, even without an insight to people's political views, it's really fascinating learning about how people deal with golf situations and their own perspectives.

What I get from this particular blog is mostly for my own personal edification. I can learn what annoys people and try not to post comments that are annoying. I'm not going to pretend that I didn't write annoying stuff in some threads even very recently, because I obviously did.

Blogs like this are really helpful, and explicitly complaining about things is always good. Being blunt is good as it brings issues out into the open where they can be addressed, but should probably be with enough tact that it doesn't sound like an accusation of deficiency.

Disagreeing is good, because we all have different perspectives on things, but maybe we could do so without possibly being so absolute about it? At least, that's what I'm trying to do now. The keyword for me I think is "trying".

I think there's a lot of merit in this.  Its one thing to disagree on factual matters, but those types of disagreements should include references to a reliable source to prove a point.  When it gets to matters of opinion, and I wish posters would more routinely identify their opinions as just that, opinions.  Too many times opinions are presented as "truth", which just tends to push people away from polite discussion and more into "arguments."

I guess the most frustrating thing is when people insist that, based on handicap, there's no way someone could hit the ball further than they do. Thankfully, for those who use GameGolf, it's possible to have some sort of way to check the validity of the claim outside of playing with someone else on the forum. That said, this type of thing doesn't really bother me as much as it used to. Other than that, I'll agree with Shane, when people argue that they know more than someone who put a lot of time into testing just because "in their experience" things are different.

Posts that state things as absolutist and judgy, when it's about subjective stuff.  (I don't tend to start it, but I do over-respond to those in kind to show what it looks like.  I should try not to do that)

That's about it.  I can skip stuff usually if it looks silly or excessive, so vent away and have fun with it.

That said - this site has a pretty great crowd of people (in general).  It's a bit unique for discussion forums in today's world.  (that, or I'm just cynical.....or both)

edit:  nevermind, Lihu kinda beat me to it it seems (i should read more posts before jumping to contribute)

      Nuh uh!!

Seriously, I've been guilty of it. Asking for clarification is one thing, but arguing with an expert is kind of silly... in my judgy opinion.

I think the "tone" of posts are sometimes taken differently than they were intended, or at least different than how I interpreted them. I guess that comes with the territory.

Very few things get me worked up on an internet forum, but there are things that kind of bug me a little...

      1. When the question is asked how someone feels about something subjective, and then that opinion is criticized. Unless they state their opinion as fact, how can it be wrong?

      2. When statistics are used so loosely that someone is deemed a liar or must at least be mistaken because their claim falls outside of the norm. Someone has to make up the minority part of a stat. Plus, we all unintentionally exaggerate.

      3. When a new user posts a video in their MySwing thread, gets a bunch of constructive responses, and they're never heard from again.

      4. When winning a debate is paramount to uncovering a truth or possibility.
