Anyone here train in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ)?

My son (13) recently joined a gym and started training. I've been watching and considering joining myself. It looks like a lot of fun and something I could definitely get hooked on.

Any kind of marshal arts training is not a bad thing one's health, and body.

I'm not an expert but my understanding is that jiu jitsu is the nastiest martial art. The moves are such that you can break the other guy's bones and ligaments.

Until you get so battered and bruised from sparring that you can't go play golf...

Monroe Jiu Jitsu

He earned his first stripe in December and his confidence is through the roof. What a great activity. I have decided not to join yet because I want him to have his own thing.

I did it for awhile. Got promoted to blue belt. Its a great way to exercise and get some extra flexibility, but i was just getting injured too much. My shoulder still hurts everyday because of it.

    • I’d rather be someone who loves to win. That’s the fun side of competition—chasing the highs and enjoying the success. Hating to lose just feels like living in constant stress, and who needs that? That said, I’m probably more of a “hate to lose” kind of person. Losing gets under my skin way more than it should, and I’ve definitely dwelled on dumb stuff longer than I’d like to admit. It’s annoying, but hey, at least I’m aware of it.
    • Shot an 85 today, and man, it was all over the place. Started with a double bogey on the first hole because, of course, I sliced my drive into the rough. Got it together a bit with a couple of pars and even snuck in a birdie on the front nine, which felt great. The back nine? Total mixed bag. Crushed a drive on 12, felt like a pro, then immediately three-putted for bogey. Typical. Finished strong with a par on 18, though, so I guess I can’t complain too much. Just need to figure out my putting before the next round
    • I would pick Loves to Win. From my perspective, if one competes, one will lose and/or not finish 1st frequently. If I hated losing, I would stop competing. Winning is fun and often exciting. It never happens often enough for me but I enjoy competing and see success now and then.
    • To your point. There is no doubt there's a spectrum. I don't think anyone is totally one way or another. So, hate and love are probably too strong of words. But this exact question came up about me during a family game this Christmas. Everyone answered the same way for me. It's also the way I answered for myself, so its probably accurate.  I "love" to win. But I don't "hate" to lose. I really enjoy winning. I think of when I won the golf tournament I play every year. By the same token, I've always been truly happy for whomever wins the tournament. Some guys really burn when they lose. Not me, I feel good for whomever won and move on.  So, for my answer I definitely enjoy winning more than hate losing. Which is also the way I like to be. So I'm glad that others who know me well see that in me. 👍
    • That is quite an improvement rate but likely not a record. Here are my tips: 1. Enter and win, or at least place in the top 4, at the Mississippi Golf Association Men’s Golf Championship in June, 2025. Also check out their sanctioned events and enter some of those. This should give you a good idea where your game stands compared to very good players. 2. Make a 4th post. You have been absent since December 14.
