TST Explores the ShotScope H4 (Stats Tracking Device) and Pro LX Rangefinder

I got a response from Shot Scope, and their advice was to uninstall and reinstall the app. That worked, and I was able to sync my rounds after doing that. Something to keep in mind for others. Support did say this was a known issue, so possible that others will see it.

I may try that too. Mine synced… eventually. It had trouble connecting and "Setting Up…". It eventually did.

I somehow lost my H4.

Played 2 rounds without it and really missed it.

So I ordered a new one. The day after I got it, I found the old one.

Did you use the code here? 🙂

That's good, though. You should always have one charged. 😄

I totally forgot. I just asked my wife to order it off amazon. So I could get it same day. I wanted it for golf league. You know the old phrase about a fool and his money? ... image.gif.1bf35b2032383b0d0833aa9b0abf5300.gif

It's actually kind of nice to have two. I try to just leave a charged on in my golf bag all the time.

The best thing about Shotscope and the worst thing about shotscope is you can't run from the data.

I'm a mess.

So the tournament I played the first week of May at Bears Best in Las Vegas. I played okay. But my final round looked like this:

Screenshot2025-06-02083050.png.5d5c8471e332ed40a01f26e84f5986d7.pngVS A 5 HCP.

Clearly my putting was holding me back.

So the next round I played:

Screenshot2025-06-05093151.png.dffa4aa705e551abb3a6c9438090d9e4.png      VS A 5 HCP.

Yay, putting improved, but my tee shots and short game fell way off:

Next Round:

I am wondering if this is worth asking ShotScope (the company) about.  I have been thinking of my short game a bit and looked at my statistics.  Compared to a 10 handicap (I am a 10.9 as I type this), past ten rounds, I am losing 0.06 in short game.   That's close enough that I want to look at myself now compared to a 5 here.  Losing 0.55, that tracks, and now I want to see where.

From the rough, I'm gaining 0.03.  Cool.  From the fairway, I'm losing 0.13 ; some practice and being more certain of my quarter and half swing distances will shore that up I think.

Bunker, -0.45;  I could have guessed that.    I have one greenside bunker shot per round average (if I'm reading this correctly) in the last ten rounds and it appears it wasn't a particularly good shot (when I won my flight of my club championship a few years ago, 54 holes stroke play, I hit into zero bunkers the entire tournament;  that's my favorite kind of bunker play).  That's cool, and I love the drill from LSW about long bunker shots.  And I do try to prioritize not hitting into bunkers, and when I'm in one, my goal is get out to where I can two putt or, failing that, to where a decent putter (which I strive to be soon) can two putt.  Getting up and down is a bonus, and I haven't holed out from a bunker in over 15 years.

And then we have distance, where every short game range outside of 10 yards, I'm losing to the 5 handicap, and not gaining all that much inside 10 yards.   10-20 yards is the most concerning, at -0.30.  My quarter 58-degree is 20 yards, so these are more touch shots, something I don't really practice (I have a few estimates for what eighth shots do, which I don't have a better term for other than "using this wedge, imagine it's a long putt motion.")

I wish I had a grid:  for each distance gradient, for each short-game lie type, how's my SG?  Are my losses primarily a bunch of bad bunker shots with some decent-to-good not-bunker shots or do I have some distance from the fairway/rough where I have plenty of room for improvement?   This isn't quite the joke about Game Golf telling me to improve at 25-50 yard shots from the other to gain 0.2 strokes per round, but something in between is what I'd like to know.

Has anyone played around with "My Strategy?"  It seems they've revamped it -- I remember not liking the interface a while ago.  Today I went over a course I play semi-often and was able to designate a tee box for each hole, then choose a a club and target direction and it put my scatter pattern for that club off the tee, showing average SG for fairway / rough / bunker (if appropriate) / green.  I could change the club and see how another behaved.  It wasn't clear to me what I can gain from this, or where the follow-up shot supposedly originates, but it is neat to look at it on a map.

What motivated me is that I'm debating taking less than driver on one of the par-4s next time I play this course, probably 4-Wood.  I have found myself, sometimes off of a good tee shot, playing my second shot from the tree line, as the fairway slopes strong left to right.  I don't think I've even had a near-GIR on that hole in 2026 (6 rounds at this course), and it's my second-worst strokes-gained hole, playing to an average of 5.3 for me -- the only worse is a hole where I've hit an O.B. en route to a bogey and also managed a triple bogey another round.

Scattering my 4W pattern off that tee shows a higher strokes gained, but then again, hitting that club is far from a guarantee I won't fade it a bit and roll into the tree line, now further back from the green.  And I haven't hit a bunted driver in a while, maybe I need to practice that shot, but that isn't something this feature can show (since it doesn't know why my tee shots ended up where they did).  Then again, it might not know where I was aiming for my tee shots either.

On a related note, I am finding their course analysis tool interesting, especially when I can sort by strokes gained average and also determine which hole(s) I'm playing to what stroke average.  Interesting that the #2 and #4 handicap I'm averaging under bogey, while 5-6-7 and 12 handicap holes I'm averaging over bogey.  The hole I described a moment ago is the #12 handicap.

    • Day 28, June 1.  Went to a course near me while running errands to practice putting.  I wanted to chip also but their chipping green was closed. I did my 4' and 6' drills (around the clock, but with the goal of making each putt twice, for a total of 24 from each station).  On the 4' putts, I took a total of 32 putts to sink all 24.  I'm very happy with the 75% make rate (scratch one-putt at that distance is 80%, bogey 65%). For the 6' putts, I took a total of 52 putts, for a 46% make rate (scratch: 55%, bogey 39%).  That's an improvement I'm happy with, and I'm aiming to do this drill once a week for a while, now that my putting (over the past five rounds) is better than the 10 hcp baseline (I'm a 10.7? 10 point something as I type this), which is far better than 6-7 months ago when I was losing strokes to the 25 handicap baseline (I really should write up what I did to improve over this time).  Amazingly, on the 6', there was one putt (approximately coming from 10:00) that I didn't sink at all in 4-5 passes and then was the only coin remaining, and it was face up.  I could've sworn it would break right, and I kept missing it left, and when I finally aimed straight in, I made two in a row.  Maybe it was one of those rare (?) double-breaker 6' putts.
    • This is feeling like the club is at P2. To get lower launch angles I have to feel like I’m dragging my hands through impact just delofting the crap out of the club.  This is trying to stop at P2.5. The consistency in launch angle gets worse. Contact gets worse.   trying to go P3, things get more volatile. The more I increase my swing length the more I can’t lower the dynamic loft.  Edit: these are with my 56 degree.
