I can remember way way back, I found a Penfold ball somewhere.Β  It may even have been the old English ball, slightly smaller than the USGA ball.

Why are you playing that ball?

Does it perform better than others?

What separates it from the dozens of other brands/models on the market today?

Frankly it’s a good value at $35/dozen and it does what it is supposed to do. For me it goes as far as the PV1 and has similar short game spin. I tend to play a lot of knock down shots into greens and it stops as I expect from a urethane ball.

Other than that it’s the cool factor, who doesn’t want to play James Bond’s golf ball? My step son, who kinda looks like Goldfinger, didn’t find it amusing when I handed him an old Slazenger on the first tee. 🀣

1927 is a sham. Someone bought the name after it was dormant for decades.

So MacGregor, Ram and how many others are shams?

Yeah. A bit. To a lesser extent, as MacGregor has still had something and been in nearly continuous "production" or whatever you want to call it. Penfold hasn't even really existed for nearly 30 years.

Does that offend you? If so, why?

More confused by the comment, as far as I know Penfold simply outsources ball manufacturing to Nassau. Kind of like every club company outsources every component of their clubs.Β

They're listing 1927 as their founding year or whatever, and yet… I don't know if they were in business for a few decades in there. Just put "2023" in there. Or don't list the year at all.

I wasn’t aware Penfold has closed up. They have been operating continuously from what I have read. I ordered balls from the UK website long before they opened up a US operation.

The new ACE ball is made by LaunchTec. Shocking enough the evil empire of golf terminated the 25 plus year contract with Nassau with no notice and no communication about the existing orders. Callaway made what appears to be a, well if you can’t find anyone else we will fit you in offer. The balls are open stock so they don’t break any new ground but perform as one would expect of urethane balls.

Very simple.Β  It lends them an air of respectability and the ability to claim that legends have played the ball and won majors with it.Β  If that branding didn't exist, what would separate them from the multiple other brands in the 25 to 40 dollar bracket producing three/four piece balls, mostly direct-to-customer stuff

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)
  • Aidia Z-009 Putter
  • Inesis Soft 500 golf ball

I get that it's actually a pretty average ball. Even the folks that are selling it say it's all about the nostalgia and not about the performance.Β

But here's the thing if I buy a dozen it gives me an excuse to do my sh!tty Sean Connery impression... "Strict rules of golf, Goldfinger."Β

Let's be honest, who among us plays by the "strict rules of golf"?Β  Still, its a good line, even when delivered poorly.:-P

As PXG Parsons said, you can’t make a ball better than the ProV1. So average for a urethane ball is better than most of us playing average golf courses can take advantage of so why not practice our Scottish brogue? 🀣
