  1. 1. Is Collin Morikawa being cheap or generous?

    • Generous, he doesn't have to give anything

    • Cheap, he could give a lot more, especially if he advertises it

True. I guess it's not the disagreements or even personalization that bothers me as much as my perceived mischaracterization of what I'm trying to say. Maybe I don't write well for online posts. Either way, it's unpleasant for me.

Come to think of it, this is true of practically all social media. Which is why I generally don't participate in it.

How cynical are we becoming as a society when we question people’s decision to make charitable donations? Yea he gets a tax write-off, but he’s straight up giving money away. This isn’t like one of those charity auctions where you donate an item and then buy it back, getting a write-off on both ends.

It helps raise awareness because he’s a public figure, albeit a rather obscure one outside of the golf community.

@billchao Completely agree! Celebrities raising awareness about disasters is great, and  saying they’ll pledge money is a sign of “putting my money where my mouth is”.  Hurricane Katrina had a ton of celebrities stepping up.

Of course there’s a tax benefit to Colin just like any of us who make charitable gifts and there should be.  For every dollar we donate to charity, it’s one less dollar we have of our own, and one less dollar the government needs to support charities indirectly. Keep in mind the tax benefit isn’t a full dollar, it’s based on your tax rate. So a $1 donation might reduce your taxes by. 30-40 cents. The tax benefit rewards certain social behaviors.

There are many ways we communicate and we use more than one method simultaneously when in person. Unfortunately, on an Internet forum, we can only use text. It’s rather limiting in many ways. I still worry that things I post (especially in jest) will come across the wrong way, even if directed at people I’ve known here for years.

What I’m saying is, don’t let this experience stop you from posting in the future. Use it as a learning tool to get better at articulating your position.

Or don’t. I’m not trying to tell you what to do 😉

Seriously? Thanks for the advice, but don’t tell me what I should think.

I was saying that if you weren't judging or being cynical or whatever… your thoughts would stop there. They wouldn't continue on to "but it's a small percentage of his income."

It wasn't "telling you what to think." You misread it.

Or… don't assume you read what others are writing the way they wrote it. 😛

Again, I wasn't telling you "what to think." I'm saying that by continuing on past "it's a lot of money" and talking about his donation as a percentage, the comment about the press release, and the poll question itself and the word "cheap," it comes across a certain way.

P.S. Also, you're the only vote in the poll for "cheap." So it appears you really do think those things. And maybe you do have an opinion with which almost everyone disagrees. So what? How does that negatively affect your day-to-day life? If I got pissed or hurt every time someone disagreed with me… well, I darn sure wouldn't have gotten married. 🤣

Cheap would be-"I'll let you use my name or image for a fundraiser-And I'm going to claim that allowing yall to do that is worth $200k and writing that off on taxes."

Donating money is almost never "cheap."

IOW-What the hell man?-If I'm Collin and I see this thread I am like "WTF?-I just will not donate next time."

I voted “Generous”.  As for telling people about it he may encourage other golfers to do the same.  Maybe even encourage his sponsor(s) to do a “Match”.  It does not necessarily have to be self-promotion.

    • Day 323 - Opposite of yesterday, focusing more on taking a full backswing than anything else.
    • Day 139: worked on putting for a while. Did the two cups drill for bead.
    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
