I’m recommending you go a step farther and just get players irons instead of players distance irons.

Ditto.

Thus my P770, T150, Apex CB, etc recommendations from earlier.

I play the original P770s and I never get random fliers, if it goes 10-20yds further than expected it's always due to something else I didn't account for like wind, lie, elevation, maybe strike if I hit it thin, etc.

The pro of switching to those kinds of irons is that you won't have a 30yd variance on similar strikes with your 7 iron. Plus they (IMO) look better, generally sound and feel better too.

What about 3, 4, 5 iron Pro 225 and 223 6-PW?

Aren’t “fliers” just better struck shots? You can’t make a ball go further out of nowhere with the exact same swing, something changed. It’s a double edge sword. For us amateurs who have lots of mis hits we want the face to be more “forgiving” so the mis hits don’t drop off dramatically.

1. Players irons = big distance changes on your mis hits. Your gonna be short a lot of the time

2. Players distance you’ll prob be more consistent but have a few “fliers”

  it’s up to you

No. Fliers launch with less spin than normal which causes them to carry farther. It’s why you typically see them happening more out of the rough.

If anything they can be struck slightly worse. Centered laterally but slightly higher on the face. This is how it happens with GI irons from the fairway IMO. I’m prone to the occasional flier from the fairway because I have a pretty shallow AoA with my irons.

So after a trip to Dick’s House Of Sport this evening, the Mizuno Pro 225 would into the same category as Apex Pro, T150, P770, etc. The pictures do not give them justice. The long irons are a little chunkier.

I was in the same boat as you. I was between the Ping  G430 and i525. Like them both but went with the i525. Maybe ego, maybe looks, but I hit them well, they looked sleeker , and overall a great iron. Pretty identical to the P790 in looks and feel but I prefer the i525

I'm just a mid handicapper, but my experience with SGI irons is that they all have a lot of offset. I just can't hit irons with so much offset. I pull all the shots. Surely there's something wrong with my swing. But I can hit players irons (with significantly less offset) much better. I'm currently gaming Mizuno Pro 223 and love them. Much more forgiving than the Titleist AP2s I used for years. And much better distance control.

It might just be how you’re squaring the face at address. Offset will change the way the club looks to you.

All offset really does mechanically is shift the CoG of the club farther back from the shaft.

I was able to actually able to hit a few of the more “player’s” irons. I haven’t made any decisions yet. I tried the Mizuno Pro 223 and 221 (Though the Pro 241, 243, 245 will be out before we know it), the new T150s are nice, I like the feel, about 10 yards shorter than my E722 but it has 4.5° more loft. So it’s about right. The 225 was about 5 yards shorter smaller dispersion. Takomo and Srixon ZX5 MkII are possible as well.
